Do not miss my retail days

Aug 27, 2019 8:25 AM

I will..literally...walk out of the store when a worker passive aggressively greets me. Because let’s face it, we all know that’s what it is

As a truck driver, I buy all my fuel at Love's. But the WELCOME TO LOVES when I walk in EVERYTIME makes me want to go elsewhere

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I’d go back in a heartbeat to get out of telesales if only I could live on that wage.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They think it helps keep people from stealing.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Management should look angry and be wielding a shotgun... Or look like Dilbert's boss.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This! I’m not antisocial at all, but I don’t walk into Target looking for every employee to be my best friend. Just let me buy pens in peace

Every clothing store: Hey! I noticed you have a pulse, so you must be interested in this and this and this and this and this and thiiiiiisss

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"H-..." "No thanks!"

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

So "Hi" "Anything else?" "You want the receipt?" "Have a good day" is too tough for people to react to? Or is this another situation?

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

I think this applies more to floor associates than cashiers. Some stores want employees to be aggressively helpful.

The restaurant I work at has a “connect & discover” policy. I HAVE to ask the names of customers at my tables. It’s awkward AF 8/10 times.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Management used to make us offer everyone a cup of tea and when we explained that one customer doesn’t speak English so there’s no point 1/2

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 4

She then decided to ask him. He didn’t understand and the manager looked like an idiot. She came back and blamed us for making her look dumb

Management

I'm forced to make small talk and frequently get stuck talking to an old man as he tells me his life story while I have a huge line

7 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

IRASSHAIIMASEEEEEEEEEEE!!!! Any shop staff in Japan

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You being forced to "Welcome" every customer and not "Greet" them, which is incorrect according to Best Buy.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I hate best buy too

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

At Arby's we were once made to All say "hello" when someone walked in the door. It stopped after we literally scared 3 customers away.

7 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

"It increases the likelihood that the customer will make a purchase in our store by 70%" - my (previous) managers

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And on average conversion rates are 20% in a GOOD store. So you get a whole 28% chance (or less than 1 in 3) that they'll buy! Whooooo!!!!

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Ahahaha YUP ?

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I love it when employees say hi and ask if I need help. It beats the shit out of trying to track someone down when I have a question.

7 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

“Can I help you find?” translation “what do you need?” As opposed to “how are you, your day, special day?” translation “ let’s be friends” 1

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Management believes this will update, increase tips and make you want to come back. 2/2

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They're right. I will always go back to places where I've had positive experiences and they know me.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There you go

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Remember, we WELCOME customers, we don't greet them!

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If I could just have service staff leave me alone unless I do the big boy thing of seeking help if I need it, that'd be great.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That would be great..

Welcome to Costco, I love you

Welcome to Costco, I love you.

For me its those street sellers who approach people. Except the white dragon should have its hand full of something very heavy.

7 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Haha yeah they try to get me to. Fuck that shit. I'll help those who seem lost or be friendly to the occasional person but only in an

Organic manner

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I feel like an NPC sometimes. Constantly "Hello there." "Have a nice day" or "Guards Help Me!"

7 years ago | Likes 234 Dislikes 1

Stay a while

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Look around you. Does anyone have a yellow question mark/exclamation point above their heads? If you don't see one, it's probably you.

7 years ago | Likes 46 Dislikes 0

I have a quest for you, traveller.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"SKYRIM BELONGS TO THE NORDS!"

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I work at a library and find myself saying “Have a nice day!” to people who aren’t actually making their way for the door.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hit em with a "stop right there, criminal scum!" Once in a while.

7 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 0

7 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Well, if you haven't already see it, you need to check out Epic NPC Man: https://youtu.be/G97xdpy6Am4

Thank you for that! I'll return the favor. Hopefully you haven't seen his one yet. There's a Fallout one too! https://youtu.be/6Ym5ibEzCtE

Yea.......there's not much of a better way to show this!

20 ppl walk in the door, one after another? Hello, welcome to... Hello wakcome to... Hello welcome to...

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This action apparently cuts way down on theft and shoplifting, because it tells potential thieves that you’ve noticed them.

7 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Do you this is is why they're so mega aggressive at Lush, gotta be hard to keep eye on the merch if it's all without packaging!

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This. I always assumed they don't care if I need help or not, they just want me to know they're watching me if I try something shady.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Pretty useless when it's a theft ring and other members draw off employees with bullshit questions and distractions.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

But it still helps cut down on theft overall

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Probably just my antisocial nature, but I greatly dislike the forced small talk from waiters/waitresses/fast food employees that's happening

7 years ago | Likes 535 Dislikes 2

Its your antisocial nature

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Pretending to be your friend =/= Professional courtesy

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Same. It's a great way to make sure I never come back.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I was almost written up at my grocery job I used to have because I would just head nod while facing aisles. I wasnt "engaging enough"

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They dont like it either usually lol

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Yeah don't talk to me and I won't talk to you is kinda the sacred unspoken agreement

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

In my case it is my social anxiety and asocial nature.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I just assume its a persons way of gauging possible threats.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Gauging possible threats by asking if you've got anything fun planned for the weekend?

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah we all hate it, whether employee or customer it's being forced upon us either way. Too much fakeness and sanitized inhuman BS everywher

7 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

I can only imagine the incredibly cringy fakeness gets the management going tho, they seem like the type to get off on eps of The Office.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah they really believe in their fake lifeless version of reality, and that it's good if it helps move product. Utter squares they are.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Blame the people who take the damn surveys. "Were you greeted/had employee interaction? No. Would you have liked it? Yes."

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Nah I just blame corporate. Survey takers want more humanity too, but you cant force your employees to act human, it will come off as fake

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They're just trying to make things pleasant for you and them.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 12

No they're just doing it because they've been told to. It's obviously forced and false.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Its enforced pleasantries which is patronising, unwarranted and not required for a good enough experience

7 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

You sound like an uppity prick tbh. Loosen up.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

You sound like a condescending arse who knows nothing about me expect 2 lines of net based speech that you subjectively interpreted

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I can only judge based on what I have to work with. And what I have says you're a snooty prick.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

No, it's forced by management and it shows to the point you can tell they're tired of asking the same question 400 times a day. They don't

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

care and I honestly don't like responding to people who are only asking because they have to.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Maybe where you live. We like people in my country.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Stores that acknowledge every customer as they walk in experience less theft (generally). The fake-ass greeters at chains probably fail tho.

7 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 0

they also get less business from people like me

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 8

Sounds like something a thief would say

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

"Hi, how are you doing today?" - person just doing their job "HOW DARE YOU!" - Karen, but with anxiety

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

You will avoid a store if someone at the door says hello?

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Depends on the day, sometimes yes

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In extreme cases, it's extra mental effort added in top of an already scoually exhausting task.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

*socially >.>

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm perfectly fine with a door greeter. Bonus points if it's someone (usually elderly) who generally likes to say hi to people.

7 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

I don't mind it either. Especially not under your specified druthers. It just doesn't work in terms of doing what they hope.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What's pissing me off is how Walmart lately has the greeter check your bags on the way out.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's how Sam's Club has always been. I honestly expected it a lot sooner, but they still don't do it where I live (only at Sam's).

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Costco too but what bugs me is at Costco they check everybody. At Walmart they'll stop me and let the next five people go by.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Texas Roadhouse, Olive Garden, and even A&W employees are all required to ask about your day and if you have any upcoming activities planned

7 years ago | Likes 128 Dislikes 1

That's creepy

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I am attending an orgy later on, might as well eat now as their orgy buffet is tasteless.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Two dudes, dressed as pilots. "Special night out?" Fuck off, Texas Roadhouse.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Unreasonable, imo. I expect my server to get my order promptly and pleasantly. That's it. I'm there to eat, not be interviewed.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh my .. I would hate that! Just take my order and leave me alone ...

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ugh, ask me about the food sure, but my day is my own damn business.

7 years ago | Likes 69 Dislikes 2

What a weird attitude

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Laughs in southern

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Just wait until I've had the chance to eat some before you ask, nothing is more annoying than having to say "I don't know yet give me a sec"

7 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Not even the holocaust?

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Wasn't there.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The holocaust annoys you?

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That would make me very uncomfortable. I don't like strangers asking me personal questions. Thank fuck Canadian A&Ws don't do this

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

If it's a corporate thing, give it time and it'll make its way up there

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They shouldn't ask "how's your day" it could be "I've just been diagnosed with cancer" They cant then go "oh so sorry. Next customer please"

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

They ALL KNOW this policy of asking personal questions backfires but management requires it and they don't deal with the blowback.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I hate that, they don’t care, and I don’t want to tell them

7 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

I try to give a short, sweet answer. When I worked retail, I hated people who tried to "protest" the required small talk. If I ask 1/2

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

How your day is, please dont reply "you dont care" or something else mean spirited. People can get in trouble from managers for not asking.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Instead tell them to call the manager to come over and call the manager a ***wat or something if you want to really object.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

But it's true, management REQUIRES you to not REALLY care, if you chat with them for 30min about their problems you'll be fired for slacking

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Management wants to have their cake and eat it, they want to "show we care" yet blow them off if they actually answer the question.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"upcoming activities? I'm afraid that's classified"

7 years ago | Likes 125 Dislikes 1

“Come back with a warrant”

7 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 0

“Am I being detained?”

7 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

"I'd tell you, but I'd have to kill you"

7 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

"Welcome to Olive Garden! Any exciting plans this Friday night??" "Umm.. coming to Olive Garden."

7 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Upcoming activities? Let me tell you about my five point plan to level up a paladin in WoW classic!

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I noticed that. It's super weird. Like, I'm just here for coffee. But maybe a little forced social interaction isn't the worst?

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

But it's fake. If you just got fired from your job and they ask hows your day you can't chat about how you now can't make mortgage payments.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It's not the end of the world but it's an annoying trend I'm sure most people on both sides wish it would just end.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I hated doing this when I worked for Walgreens, the assholes who came in never fucking cared

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I always respond to the poor person who has to say "Welcome to Walgreens!" I just say thanks and smile. Takes 0 effort.

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Thank you for being a good person.

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It makes me a little sad that the bare minimum of consideration looks good, but thanks!

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Long story most of the people who came to my store were really nasty people and me not being very social hated having to greet them.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I worked retail for a long time. I try very hard to make their day less shitty.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

You're welcome and thank you for being awesome.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This is one of the reasons why Walmart failed in Germany. Also because the way they treat their employees.

7 years ago | Likes 145 Dislikes 1

Good! Fuck Walmart!

7 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 1

Can confirm. Just the last part, not the Germany part

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Reason number 1 was probably that they didn't want to give their employees basic insurance, which is required by law in Germany

7 years ago | Likes 82 Dislikes 0

Wait insurance? Doesn't Germany have public healthcare?

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It’s for work related accidents, so that the cost is for the employer and not for the employee ( through public healthcare)

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Wait employers don't need to comp employees for work related injuries in Germany? Just provide them with insurance?

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The insurance is to make sure the cost can be payed, if the employer is found to be negligent the insurance company can recoup their cost

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They're legally obligated to have a save work environment and keep paying them while hospitalised no matter how long I think.
