Long exposure! A DSLR camera to start, high ISO, small aperture number (2.8 or lower), a wide lens, and time to practice!

I have a DSLR, tripod, and time. But I couldn't figure out the right balance when I was out of the city.

500/(focal length x crop factor) to get how long your shutter should be open. Full frame CF is 1, crop is 1.5ish. So for me 500/(24 x 1)=21s

My ideal settings are ISO 3200, 24mm, and f/2.8 for 20ish seconds. There's so math to get it perfect, and you have to nail focus as well.

I think that's were I messed up. You can't see anything to see how focused it is, or at least I couldn't.
