That's called half-swording, it was a very effective fighting technique used against armor. The pommel would pierce through.

Stabbing through plate armour will get you a couple inches at best, if you hit perfectly perpendicular. Marginally easier to bludgeon.

The bottom third to half usually isn't sharpened. Most of the work is done with the top third of the blade.
