I always loved when Charlies ma says "where'd you get that bread?" and Granpa says "Who cares? That doesn't matter." Grandpa was a gangsta.

Depression is a hell of a burden.

I reckon, people bashing gramps here, what if he is mentally unfit?
BDBones
A good point was made, but if he was mentally unfit he shouldn't be the one in charge of a kid in a whacky factory

If I could do that and help my kid win a chocolate factory, then I'd bum my way through it too. Also, what about the other 3 in bed?
YouShouldHearTheThingsIDontSay
Now he is living it up on Charlie's chocolate money.

And he had a coke nail. Using his daughters money to ski the snowy slopes

He also talks Charlie into breaking the rules, then try’s to convince him to steal a gobstopper to sell to slugsworth
3dartwork
I can't remember when Joe has anything to do with the gobstopper. But Joe is a dick.

This is why Willy Wonka wanted to choose a child to give his factory to!

Grandpa Joe is the actual villain in this movie. Go back and look at all the times he tries to influence Charlie in a bad way.

Eh, can't bind a kid with an NDA anyhow. Nothin wrong with keeping a Plan B.

"who cares where he got it [the bread]? the point is he got it." actively encouraging charlie to steal.
ThrillMurray
Next time you watch the film, look at the fingernails on his little fingers. Grandpa joe liked a good bump every now and then.

Makes fun of children for breaking rules, convinces Charlie to break rules, lights up at Wonka for telling him he broke the rules. H8 him.
AnythingMuchShorter
He talks him into trying the fizzy lifting drink, for one, and that's what almost gets him kicked out of the contest.

That's true, but everyone dies, few have a chance at glory, the glory of owning a really weird candy factory.

Plus he insisted on using his daughter's money to buy pipe tobacco even though everyone was starving.

In the film he insists that he not get tobacco and isnt it the money that charlie uses to actually get the bar?
He finally started to feel guilty when his GRANDSON was supporting his habit, so he used that money to buy Charlie a Wonka Bar.
TinyLiehon
Don't remember that bit being in the books

Omg so true!

I used to work child protection, that is so common. "I don't have money for food!" (After spending 100 a week on cigarettes & soda)
Arrrrgggggghhhh
Not quite the same, but when I worked at a servo ppl would come in buy a $30 packet of smokes and then only have enough for like $2 of petrol
For non aussies. Servo = gas/petrol station, smoke = cigarettes. And yes cigarettes are that expensive here.
If those people have kids they will be doing the same at the supermarket. Buy "smokes" first, then 2 min noodles for kids. Then buy a meal
For themselves at the pub.
