If you want to use it for smashing, I'd recommend shortening the chain by about half or more. Will make it easier to swing.

I thought a flail was more used to disarm one's opponent by wrapping the chain around their weapon. Otherwise against armor, use a maul.

I think the chain would just slide off, without taking the weapon with it. But it would probably be useful for smashing around a shield.

That last part is pretty much why flails were a thing. Unpredictability made it hard to defend against, and they caused decent enough 1/2
