Paganini's melody is in a minor, so when Rachmaninoff read the music upside down, it looked to be in D-flat Major, and he made only a few minor emendations.

I think the pianist you're referring to is Josef Hofmann. Though that doesn't detract from the fact that Liszt still performed incredibly..
