Ever wonder how teeny tiny my jumpers start out as? Small as the tip of a pen!
New year, new life!! This is what NEW new baby jumping spiders look like! They’re all i2s and have only molted once. These little soot sprites surprised me- they’re Circus’s second clutch, but I didn’t even know they were there. She laid them inside her hide and showed NO signs of it. She’s been out and about, eating normally, her abdomen never got big. If I hadn’t pulled a mealworm carcass out of her hide and snagged on the nest, I probably wouldn’t have discovered them for a few more weeks when they started emerging. Just goes to show that even experts can make mistakes sometimes!!

Just catching up on posts I missed this past week. <3

"I didn't know I was pregnant" - spooder edition! 🤣
stonedlikeicheckedoutmedusa
Lmao but fr though 😂 So fun fact, spiders only need to mate ONCE to be fertile for their entire lives. What I’ll probably do is put her in an enclosure WITHOUT a hide. Then if she has another clutch, I’ll pull it when it’s still just an egg sac. After the 2nd or 3rd clutch, babies start getting progressively smaller and less healthy
UnprunedSynapses
I thought this was dragonfruit from the thumbnail
stonedlikeicheckedoutmedusa
Lmao I can see that!
IUpvoteFuturama
That's a lot of baby spooders, happy new year Medusa!
stonedlikeicheckedoutmedusa
Oh this is a SMALL clutch compared to what I’m used to!
SuperfluousMeh
Somehow I got onto a YouTube video about a breeder with angel hair tarantulas and he was opening the egg sack and it was filled with tiny little tarantulas so close to each other yet not touching. It was like a negative image of a tiny night sky.
stonedlikeicheckedoutmedusa
Interesting! I wonder whose channel you stumbled upon?
GuggelPlayer
Ew! Super cool and spiders are amazing BUT as someone who has arachnophobia its still Ew from me dog
stonedlikeicheckedoutmedusa
Yeah, the group of them and looking tick-like definitely gives icky. Check my page for cuter adult jumper content! :)
jaystaf
awe, I thought they were eresids and I was going to say you should show their cute little munchkin faces! I guess i'll do it, too cute not to share even if irrelevant
stonedlikeicheckedoutmedusa
I want a velvet sooo bad!! Not even to breed, just to have! If you ever want to swap spiders or enclosures for one, hmu!!
jaystaf
that's not mine unfortunately, totally stole that pic from the interwebs. how do you feel about net-casters?
stonedlikeicheckedoutmedusa
They are AMAZING!! I have a female ogre face (my male recently passed) and I absolutely think they have the coolest hunting method!
jaystaf
agreed! yea that happens, depending on species the males don't last longer than a month or two in the lab, you know with the lack of eating and everything lol Are they spinosa? subrufa?
stonedlikeicheckedoutmedusa
Deinopis aspectans (or Deinopis sp. Cameroon)
ATLandNerdy
At first I thought it was a heat gun, and I was wondering how some sick shit got to the front page...
stonedlikeicheckedoutmedusa
Oh yuck. Yeah no; not in this page!!
VincitQuiSeVincit
baby spooders! so cute!
stonedlikeicheckedoutmedusa
They kinda are! They also kinda look like ticks 😬
compused
What size enclosures do the larger species of jumping spiders require? Any heat and humidity requirements as well?
stonedlikeicheckedoutmedusa
An adult jumper should be kept in something roughly between a 4x4x6 and 5x5x9 enclosure with lots of clutter to feel safe, hide in, and web up. They need to be sprayed approximately once a day to maintain proper humidity. No supplemental heat needed; you shouldn’t even keep them in direct sunlight (like a windowsill) because they can overheat and be cooked
sociowrath
Do you lose many to cannibalism?
stonedlikeicheckedoutmedusa
Not really, no! I use an enclosure specially designed for clutches- they’re 4 inches tall but 8 inches long, which gives the babies plenty of room to spread out up top and therefore not cannibalize :)

stonedlikeicheckedoutmedusa
Agreed!
Pikkupanda
OMG they’re the Itsy Bitsy Spider from the nursery rhyme!!!
stonedlikeicheckedoutmedusa
Awww I didn’t think about that but they do!
ironymus
They are so cute!
Reminds me of the small zebra jumping spiders that live in my flat
stonedlikeicheckedoutmedusa
I get zebra jumpers too! I love them but have never had success keeping them in captivity
ProfessorBanesworth
They're like little poppy seeds!
stonedlikeicheckedoutmedusa
They’re sooo tiny!!
KittensForDays
Ugh I just love your posts!! Teeny tiny little babies, so cute! Thanks for the pen tip for scale. Pizza My Heart for you!! Happy New Year!! 🎆
stonedlikeicheckedoutmedusa
Awe I’m glad you love my posts! It’s a fun little side project and it makes me happy when people tell me it makes a difference :)
I’m glad I had the thought to use something for scale! I almost forgot!
Happy new year to you too!
TheFastpaws
I wouldn't know they were jumpers without all the extra colors that come later at this stage.
stonedlikeicheckedoutmedusa
They do look pretty unique from other spiders, BUT I am incredibly biased due to my education lol
akelamishari
So if not for the mealworm, do they just stay inside the egg sac until when? They were instar 1 in there?
stonedlikeicheckedoutmedusa
Usually second instar is when they start emerging
stonedlikeicheckedoutmedusa
I’ll show what it looks like as they naturally start emerging with Toasty’s babies, which should be emerging in the next 2 weeks
akelamishari
Wow, so from eggs to tiniest spoods they dont even come out of the sac? Thats amazing
stonedlikeicheckedoutmedusa
Nope! Jumping spider moms are actually good and attentive to their babies, keeping them in the nest until they’re ready to venture out on their own :)
akelamishari
Thanks for teaching us all these things!
stonedlikeicheckedoutmedusa
You’re welcome! My professional background is teaching so it comes pretty naturally lol
crusadurus
I hope they are good at sharing food cuz I doubt they eat much at that size. Tho I'm sure they don't eat nearly as much as Kumoko did in the anime or you would be broke 😂
stonedlikeicheckedoutmedusa
They actually do hunt in packs for the first few months!
jimhotep
bebes!
stonedlikeicheckedoutmedusa
So many beebees!
migratingotter
Always loved jumping spiders. Thanks for sharing the bebes
stonedlikeicheckedoutmedusa
Thanks for taking an interest! :)
loopdesigns
Oh, they're so cute!!!
stonedlikeicheckedoutmedusa
I think so too :)))

*phew* from the thumbnail my first thought was "WHY ARE THERE TICKS!?" Spiders rule. Ticks do not.
stonedlikeicheckedoutmedusa
Ticks can fuck all the way off!! Arthropod I will never try to change anyone’s mind about
They do unfortunately look a little bit like ticks at this stage though; I can admit it
MrStealYourGiF
Anyway, here's spiderwall ... https://www.nytimes.com/video/science/earth/100000010511471/massive-stinking-spiderweb-cave.html?smid=url-share (Recently newsy large spider colony in cave near Albanian/Greek border)
stonedlikeicheckedoutmedusa
I saw this!! It’s beyond fascinating!!
Cabreza
I love every spider I can’t see, except the one in my shoe.
stonedlikeicheckedoutmedusa
Thanks to the Army, I also alwaysss knock out my shoes before putting them on lol
FragileDonkey
I check my boots every day before putting them on.. because we have so big fuckers around my home.
stonedlikeicheckedoutmedusa
I do the same. Thanks army
FTUG
I have always wondered, how do baby spiders eat? Do their parents catch and kill prey then leave it in the nest? How long before they are able to fend for themselves?
stonedlikeicheckedoutmedusa
So they consume a lot of nutrition from their egg, then there’s a liquid substance that mom infuses into the web. After that…they cannibalize or eat the unhatched eggs. Once they’re a little bigger, they’ll hunt in packs to take down small things like fruit flies and springtails
FTUG
Thank you!! https://media3.giphy.com/media/v1.Y2lkPWE1NzM3M2U1bW82bmxnaWJzY2NoNGxtODFjOWpmc2ludndkOG01OHV4cWRwMnppYSZlcD12MV9naWZzX3NlYXJjaCZjdD1n/83QtfwKWdmSEo/200w.webp
stonedlikeicheckedoutmedusa
You’re so very welcome! Come to me with any and all spider questions :)
00Lochnessa
I love me some jumpers but for some reason the bebes are giving slight tick vibes and makes me a tad uncomfy
00Lochnessa
Also how many on average survive from a clutch like this? And when do they start eating? Congrats on the suprise babys!
stonedlikeicheckedoutmedusa
So survival rate is anywhere from 20-80% depending on the health of the clutch and mom. The more clutches a mom has, the less babies and less health each clutch will have. I pull 3rd+ clutches and freeze them rather than letting them hatch. This ensures I’m only rehoming the most healthy of the babies
stonedlikeicheckedoutmedusa
I totally understand and respect that! They DO look a little bit like ticks
Voxius
Good stuff. My father, before he passed, was a hobbyist arachnologist with published papers as well as several of them published in the journal of arachnology. He started out with old world tarantulas, and eventually moved on to scorpions and was the first to get several species to bred in captivity. Arachnids are pretty awesome and it's always great to see passion in someone over which someone I adored was also passionate.
stonedlikeicheckedoutmedusa
That’s phenomenal!!! Do you have links to any of his work?? I’d love the read it!
Voxius
PS. He once had a female goliath bird eater who was just such a baby. Very docile and gorgeous.
JohnBluehill
About how far along in their maturity (for lack of a better word) do they start jumping?
stonedlikeicheckedoutmedusa
Lol they start experimenting with jumping when they’re a few months older than this! Right now they’re just learning to use their legs and how to eat lol
JohnBluehill
Cuz I kinda wanna see teeny tiny "uppies" waves...
stonedlikeicheckedoutmedusa
They will start doing uppies before they jump! I’ll try to catch some minuscule uppies waves!
quaggie
Asking the important question!
KittensForDays
Oh my god that would be TOO CUTE!!
stonedlikeicheckedoutmedusa
I’ll try to catch it!
stonedlikeicheckedoutmedusa
Please remember that on this page, SPIDERS ARE PETS!!! These are literally baby animals that I am sooo excited to have and proud to have bred! Keep all nasty comments/gifs to yourself and scroll past. I always use the spider tag- block it. Start your year off by not being a dick :)
sombradeamigo1742
spiders are baby its true
stonedlikeicheckedoutmedusa
They are baby
Carl99
Of course it was circus the weirdo. he still stalking her fellow spooders next to her?
Hope you and the household had a good christmas and new year.
stonedlikeicheckedoutmedusa
Yep, she still stalks and hates being handled. She’s truly living up to her name lmao
Carl99
Haha. Shes oddly endearing and cute with all her weirdness isn't she.
stonedlikeicheckedoutmedusa
I genuinely do like her- she stands out amongst all the spiders I’ve had! Plus she’s really pretty lol
Carl99
:). yeah lot of personality.
