Back in the day some men spent a fortune on model trains or car miniatures while their wives collected Hummel figurines. Adults with disposable income like to collect things, what else is new.
Guilty as charged indeed. Over the last 6 months I've been collecting Transformers again, part of "healing the inner child" from when my collection was lost during my parents breakup. The favourites of my new collection are Airazors.
Most of my Christmas presents as a toddler in the 1960s would indicate this is not a new thing. Dad really enjoyed the fuck out of "my" giant slot car track.
Since when can kids 12 and under afford to buy their own anything? seriously though when? they use the money given to them by their parents or family members. If your parents are broke? well they have to rely on grandma slipping them a 50$ for bday or christmas but either way its the adults providing the funds.
Basically all LEGO sets are in the ballpark of $0.10/piece. "Adult" sets cost more because they're bigger. If I want a $20 set I can finish in 10 minutes, that's still an option.
Does 1/4 mean number of toys or are they talking monetary value. Because I buy about 2-3 lego sets per year but they tend to be rather expensive sets, and that is the case for most of my friends that buy something that could be classed as a toy, it tends to be low number but high price.
Well in my case, a massive shit load of used Warhammer 40,000 miniatures from eBay. Mind you, a miniature that is big as your thumb, plus 9 more in a 10 man squad box, is on average about $60 new.
Nah, mine is sexier, but I'll keep this guy in mind if I ever have the need for a new one. ... Apparently the argument "...and when we have sex you will be able to see Snorlax' smiling face above mine" wasn't the deal maker I thought it would be.

It has always been that way and always will be!!! Humans are not marketable adults but happiness seeking monkey with wallets

I don't see a problem. If anything kids get better quality toys as a byproduct.

Expensive toys are wasted on the children.

'1/4 of all toy sales' or 95% of all lego sales.

Makes sense, all the stuff I wanted as a kid but was never allowed to have.

Because they will spend around 30 bucks for a kid, but 300 for something for themselves.

Lego, after decades, has finally figured this out
stevencloser
Unfortunately they also figured out that adults buying for themselves are ready to pay more than adults buying for a child.

There's some really stupidly expensive new ones with $/piece way beyond that. Like 700 for a 3000 piece crane.
KnifeKnut
Special elements cost more to make if that is the technic such that I'm thinking of

Reading this comment while literally being in Legoland having a blast right now makes me chuckle. Proof below.

Wow, those trees are so realistic. These Lego sets are getting out of hand…

Seeing as this has to rely on self-reporting, pretty sure some of that 3/4 are lying.

It has gotten stupidly expensive hasn't it? Second hand all the way.

Yep, I spend a shit-ton on "toys" in the form of cameras, guitars, speakers, etc.

Depends on the definition of "toy"... I'd say it's way higher than 1/4

So, if I throw out the double bed I can fit this bad boy in our bedroom. Now I just need to find a way to sell the idea to my boyfriend.

Maybe try to spice it up with a blindfold then (your your boyfriend, not for snorlax) that way he doesn't have to make eye contact with snorlax
Wolvenlight
Hell, put a blindfold on the snorlax too. That way he doesn't feel left out.
Fryfryfryfry
You are right, that's only fair, I mean might as well give everyone involved a blindfold at this point to keep things fair
