I'm Canadian and consider myself lucky. My grandfather found employment in Detroit and my grandmother refused to move to America. So they moved to Windsor and he drove across the border every day. But I'm actually scared living above America. Its actually the easiest time to immigrate since 1902. That was the last time we had these numbers/level of approvals to applications. Canada reduced the barriers for people with disabilities 5fold as of 2018 and increased its commitment to accepting disabled refugees.

If thats the case my next attempt may be a more hopeful one. But as it stands the Canadian governments website only promotes initiatives for migrant workers and skilled professionals to apply for entry. The only thing I ever qualified as was a drafter and I am ten years out of date. Without an official reason to be accepted the chances of approval when appealing for entry are low. I speak from experience.

This is easy to say if you do not live in a country where war has been raging for more than 30 years. Thousands of civilians died every year, in some cases even more by the US and its allies than by the Taliban. The Taliban are terrible and people will certainly have fewer freedoms, but I can understand the Afghans being tired of all the killing, bombing and fighting. One refugee, I work with told me it would be better to live in peace and see his children growing up than to be free.

And to the extent that people in your country may have been influenced by a politician a world away, well that can only be a reflection of similar inherent flaws at home. My concern with Sinn Fein would be giving a party with recent links to terrorism access to the Ministry of Justice, in particular documents relating IRA informants. And while their LGBT credentials are fine, their links to Russia and their anti immigrant language is troubling. I just got back to the US from Europe, and there is a much different feel, what I would summarize as surviving vs flourishing. People in the US are taught to get by, or fight for the necessary amount of resources (and if you are lazy, you don't deserve them), where in western European countries, the expectation of what a human needs to live a full life is considered.

That was one of my biggest fears when I was there on vacation. When you have no gun around you you feel way more secure and free, maybe it's a cultural thing but I don't get it when people say freedom is having guns everywhere...

I feel this. “Don’t fuck with a person you don’t know, you never know what they are capable of” is a phrase I picked up in high school and I tell my kids. Anyone could have a gun, anyone could be willing to use it. I have had guns pulled on me many a time. It’s the scared people to be afraid of, they are a dime a dozen and think the gun gives them power. God I hate this timeline…

The sheer number of gunowners online who say things like “i wish they would” or “if it was me..” kind of stuff is astounding. Its not about self defense, its about legally killing someone, sometimes at the smallest possible excuse.

Foreign media definitely likes to play it up as well as a part of their own propaganda. Here in Japan I heard more about violence against Asian Americans than I did in my own AAPI community in the States.

That's interesting. We (in Canada) had a foreign exchange student from Japan and he was very concerned about anti Asian sentiment (it's the West coast, and it's not 1890 any more, it's very, very small). It's it something the Japanese media focuses on a lot?
