I won't work for a company that refuses approval for use of vacation days due to staffing issues. Unless it's because at least 2 other employees also have vacation scheduled for that same period. It's the first warning signs that the company is running razor thin margins on employment and I'll be expected to work harder for normal pay when someone else isn't there.
I am the most qualified person at the company I work at. I actively got to work hurting (I have back issues) because many tasks only I can do are left undone or rescheduled to when I come back if I call out. So when I come back to work, I just have more work to do on top of my regular responsibilities. It's exhausting.
Same, we tell our employees halfway through "Dude, youve taken zero days...take some goddamn days" (also cuz we wanna avoid a shit hsow at the end of the year)
They always *gasp* at the idea: someone’s sick, someone’s out on vacation, someone quit and they haven’t filled the position yet, and someone just retired.. and how could we be this short staffed??
I live in the US and I'm super lucky that I have a mostly great employer. No official holidays off, but 24 days of PTO that we can use almost any time we want/need. (There's a handful of days where it's all hands on deck, but the rest are fair game).
I'm constantly reminded by people on imgur that most US employers still suck.
jfc, I feel so locked into my job right now, I can't afford 1 day off or all hell will break loose... I don't know what I'm going to do this year, I'm stuck...
In the UK we get 5.6 weeks (28 days) paid vacation by law. I have never ever not used every single day. And they changed the law a year ago so that companies now have to actively remind and encourage you to use all your vacation time. If they don't you can roll unused days over to the next year.
I know someone who got denied their annual leave just said okay, kept working and decided to take unpaid leave instead for her remaining time there until her paid leave accrued to a ridiculous amount and became a financial liability due to it ballooning up from promotions...etc. Context she needed to work to be eligible for citizenship and basically decided to make it as painful as possible. The manager got fired in the end. If your company is like this just leave as soon as you can.
I can take time off virtually whenever I like. And my employer makes sure that I take the provincial minimum (2 weeks) with reminders to do so if we haven’t and the end of the year is approaching. So rare to have a good employer, this is the first and only one I’ve had.
yep. because labor is the only part of the equation that usually has any sort of wiggle room, it's the first that management leans on to make as small as possible. Remember, if you die tomorrow, your job will be posted before your obituary. act your wage.
Vacation days are a part of your total compensation which is negotiated before you start work. Not using them is leaving your own compensation on the table. If you’re discouraged from takin them your reply should be that your compensation package needs to be renegotiated. If you let them own the conversation you’re already losing the game.
When I was still an entry level helpdesk employee PTO was considered a part of my total comp. The recruiter would say, OK this job pays 50k, the benefits are healthcare bla bla bla, and 10 days paid time off. Thats the comp package. You can ask for a couple extra grand. If you don't poke at the compensation a little bit you are probably getting low balled. Unfortunately there are jobs that dont do this, for example, waiters or Amazon delivery drivers. Most IT jobs do. Most office jobs, actually.
A white collar office job is hardly considered privileged? I've worked helpdesk. It was such a fucking relief to be off my feet, have an employment contract I could point to, have an HR office I could complain to, a manager I knew how to contact
But this is the plan, to work people into such exhaustion and overwhelm that there's nothing to spare to pay attention to or act on the systemic problems festering and growing to crush us all. Weakened slaves struggle to rebel for better conditions especially if you train them to rejoice over rotted crumbs that the hunger sees as gold.
There's a difference between failed to hire and people applying. Damn near impossible to get people to hire on at my post office because the local Walmart and McDonald's raised their pay to about $1 less than starting rate. And it's nothing we can do about that as it's the rate the union agreed to nationally
This. 0 CCA applicants in 8 months, 0 RCA applicants in almost a year despite continuous postings (but we also have an infinitesimal unemployment rate in my area)
The office next to ours is an 18 and is now fully staffed with RCAs while we have none and are down a 79 route every day. And what few we get get scared off by the other regular in the office playing her games. 2 bogus FMLA cases, a workers comp case for repetitive stress because she had a bunch of her customers raise their boxes up really high.
Lean staffing is the bane of my existence. Every time it's come around to it, its always "Oh well we really need you that week, otherwise we'll fall too far behind". Like hire redundancy, if my absence can CRIPPLE your organization for a week of me being sick or going on vacation than I'm not getting paid enough.
Not only are you not getting paid enough, they are not properly staffed. If one or even two people need time off and everything falls apart, the system was never truly built for success.
EXACTLY! Not even that, like what about the quality of work? It's bad enough that Americans can barely afford a one bedroom apartment or groceries and now work has to be hell 5 days a week? I can't tell you how many times I've heard my friends say, I cried today at work, or it was so busy and I was overwhelmed with no support for management. Sure that happens, shit happens. But no job should constantly weigh your mental health day in and day out.
100%, my sister is an ER charge nurse who is so overwhelmed and overworked because some upper management piece of shit makes bank off of her. I don't want to be radicalized but damn is American making me.
I work in a hospital and hear this all the time. Nurses are told to document while they are with the patient so there is more detailed notes but then they don't connect with the patient and don't get through things as quickly (and don't get as high of reviews). So documentation gets put off until at or near the end of the shift, resulting in staying late, which leads to management complaints. Nurses are set up for failure at all angles.
Hello! So yes hospitals do, do wage competition but it's only based on how many positions the hospital is willing to fill. Not sure "who" decides how many positions unfortunately. Usually upper hospital management with the input from our CMO.
Eh, ive worked in plenty of jobs where you gotta sometimes. If you have a team of 3 and all 3 want time of at the same time? Ye thats not gonna happen. "BuT YoU ShOuLd HiRe MoRe PeOpLe!". so we should double the workforce just because people cant take the same week of holidays? sure, but then everyone is out of a job cuz we broke lmao
*every employer I've ever had* "You're REALLY calling in today?" Like first of all fuck you, and second do you really want me to come in, do terrible work, and make everyone else sick? Wtf?
it's definitely about the hiring. The reason big companies generally have better WLB is that they have deep benches. Bigger teams, more redundancy, so people can take off and they can still keep the lights on.
I lecture smaller companies all the time about the need for redundancy. I usually couple it with a lecture about why it's a problem that middle management doesn't actually know how to do any of the jobs they're tasked with managing. You need someone that can ACTUALLY cover vacation time (not just defer work until the employee gets back) because it's a very real possibility that an employee gets sick or in an accident and cannot come to work with no warning for an extended period of time.

we used to fear that if we took vacation time the company would find that we were redundant and fire us when we got back.

That's why I don't offer paid time off.

I'm also self employed.

I'm self employed as well. My boss is a real slave driver, but hey, I get the whole month of July off work paid every year so it's not too bad

Most large companies would rather everyone not take vacations, opting for payment instead. Payment is literally cheaper, as the one person
mike13815
who would fill the void made by a whole team taking their vacations means additional benefits and insurance costs above regular pay.

Exactly.
Often you'll hear, labor is your number one controllable.
So companies attempt to use as little labor as possible in order to accomplish whatever goal.
This has always struck me as shortsighted and stupid af.
Especially when I was a sales manager. I saw labor as buckets. I'd love to have as many buckets as possible when it rains. I wanna soak it all up.
But anyway. I hate that version of me and really don't like capitalism.
