I'm just curious: did anything change in your life at the time your backpain got better too? :) I'm a physiotherapist and curious.
I went to see a physiotherapist for a shoulder injury. She took one look at my posture and said I needed more than just shoulder rehab.

Don't forget to rotate some good mornings into the workout.

partytime4321
Similar, but not the same. Good mornings are done standing with minimal or no bend in knees. Good back and hamstring workout

fattyontheinside93
Plain and simple: they weren't doing it right. Most likely lifting with their back as well. Spine should be neutral, not rounded.
Dunno. Both lifted since teenagers and took part in national and local competitions every now and then.
Hard to tell because I can't see their form/techniques/habits, but if they've been competing thenn... I could be wrong.
steikewaffel
Until you place your foot wrong and your back snaps. Seems unnecessary to strain the whole vertebrae just to train the lower back muscles.
It does a lot more than just back, so it's worthwhile IMO. If you're lifting suitable weight with proper form you should be fine.
Deadlifts are so much more than lower back exercises. It's a full compound movement, and hits your entire body if you're doing them right.
mickison
If you're doing them right. It seems to be one of those exercise that a lot of people do wrong
HeavyMetalMonk
It doesn't strain the vertebrae. It works the hamstring, lower back, mid back, upper back, traps and lats. It is one of the BEST lifts.
(2) I've heard developing glutes / hamstrings can also help alleviate back pain (in which case deadlifts are even better)

Considering most people's lower backs are one of the least undeveloped muscle groups, that's not necessarily true for most people.
I feel it most in my lower back, then hamstrings, then glutes. It's also a hell of a workout for forearms because of the weight.
