Note: some of these are free versions of pay-for software.

I know some of these are somewhat common but I included them anyway.

Here are some alternatives to the listed programs:

VLC Media Player -> MPC-HC
http://mpc-hc.org/

WinRAR -> 7zip
http://www.7-zip.org/

Gyazo -> puush
http://puush.me/

Tixati -> Deluge
http://deluge-torrent.org/

Fraps -> OBS
https://obsproject.com/

Keep in mind my intention was not to list the very best kinds of these programs, only the ones that work in my experience.

Deluge instead of Tixati

FRAPS? Isn't that dead since years?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

SketchUp is the glitchiest software. Always crashes at work

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

7zip, sharex instead of gyazo, xfire -> dead since years; I'd prefer MPC-HC over vlc (I personally use mpv but windows is tricky)

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

2006! My time travel machine works!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

xfire, winrar? what is this 2012?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

ShareX > Gyazo by far

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Install chocolatey as it is an installer for a huge Catalog of open source software that includes these. Free and awesome.

Gyazo -> puush -> ShareX

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Do you even need programs like Winrar? Whenever I need to unzip a file all I have to do is right click it and it gives me the option.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Mod Organizer is the essential one for heavy modders, if it supports the game you want to mod. It doesn't actually install the mods 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

+1 NMM is trash. Ruined my Skyrim install twice

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

but injects them when you start the game through MO, avoiding corruption of conflicts that arise from certain files being modified/present

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

That's interesting.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ha, gimp

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Don't get fraps, either use Shadowplay (if Nvidia user) or just get Dxtory

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I just use OBS.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Where is CPUID HWMonitor?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This is a really old list.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh xD

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nexus Mod Manager is terrible. Decent for beginners who never change mods but anything more than that and you want Mod Organizer.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Decent

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

*raises hand* Um teacher? I have a question. Which of these can be used to make dank high quality gifs?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

if you have an nvidia card use the Nvidia drivers to record footage rather than fraps. free, uses less resources, produces 'better' files.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Curse and 7Zip.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

WinDirStat for a visual representation of capacity allocation by folder on drives, very useful.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

OBS is way better than fraps. no watermark either!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Krita is also free. Downloaded it today and looks great

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

VLC. Best Media Player. Ever. *sides enter orbit*

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Xfire is shut down

10 years ago | Likes 51 Dislikes 0

All hail Steam!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was about to ask if people even still used it. Haven't even heard that name used in like 4 years.

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Discord is a good alternative

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

really? i had a friend or two that i could only connect with on there

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Yeah they shut it down about a year ago, you had only a one month window to download your screenshots and stuff like that

Nexus mods manager is awesome. i got 300 mods on my skyrim :'D

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Gyazo is useless, windows has Snipping Tool integrated and that does the same for screenshots (no .gif functionality though).

10 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 3

greenshot is better. Has even direct imgur-uploading-capabilities

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Gyazo is very useful. Uploads instantly to the internet. Which is its purpose, to quickly share with others.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Lightshot is what I use.

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Same, I think it's a lot better than gyazo. Probably because it is.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Lol u guys, ShareX is 10x better rhan any of those programs...

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I love shit like this, Statement A. Followed by Statement B that completely invalidates statement A.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The gyzago gif functionality creates horrible gifs which invalidates itself

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Alright, then it's one advantage actually sucks, insult taken back

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Puush forever

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

7zip way the fuck better than WinZip, WinRAR, etc. Opens almost anything (just like my swag around your mothers).

10 years ago | Likes 154 Dislikes 16

RAR 5 format support, tho.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In our company, .7z files are autom. removed. Too many crypto bots these days.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh well. Still, it makes excellent ZIPs too

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You don't have to use 7z files with 7zip

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I just don't like its interface though. But it's open source so I can change it how I want if I'd really like to

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Open source is the way to go for nearly everything. Roshal have created a very nice format, but proprietary makes it so exclusive it sucks

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You say that, but you probably don't care enough to actually do anything about it. I feel a sameness with this.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yes that's why I said 'if I'd really like to' but I'm a lazy bum

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

There's a lot of OSS that feels like it was written in the 90s still. It hurts me sometimes.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Outdated as fuck, maybe 10 years ago these were good

10 years ago | Likes 120 Dislikes 11

Just because software is old, that doesn't mean it's worthless or doesn't work anymore...

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I use several of the listed. I might even try the torrent one too see if it's any better than deluge. This list is very up-to-date.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No. VLC, Winrar... Not really

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

What? VLC is still a great media player. Winrar has it downs but still works. It's like saying Google is useless because it's old...

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Nah most are still relevant. I don't get why the very specific applications (the .nif file thing) are included though

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

fraps is absolute ass

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

gyzago is slow as fuck

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

winrar begs for you to buy it

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's a repost and he didn't bother changing anything except the description, so what do you expect :/

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Disagree. Find usability aweful...

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Welcome to Linux software xD

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Is there a better alternative to VLC? If so, what and why? Been looking for one.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

◘ Inverted dot so I can remember to check out these later.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Try MPC

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Exactly.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

potplayer

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

K-Lite codec pack, comes with MPC.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

MPC-HC, definitely. Alternative to that alternative, Daum PotPlayer. Compared to those, using VLC is like still using a blackberry in 2016..

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I haven't found anything vlc doesn't do. What are the pluses of MPC?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

MPC-HC is a million times better than VLC and 7zip makes all other compression software obsolete.

10 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 4

This.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

MPC is my jam. No frills. No fancy shit. Just a lightweight player that fucking works.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

What's so good about MPC-HC? Never used it and I can't think of one thing VLC is missing.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I have had both for years and VLC still wins in features, playback, and customization Maybe thats MPC only advantage, its dumbed down.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

MPC can do everything that VLC can but it is easier to use and some things just work better. For example audio normalization.
