Practical make-up would look like plastic with today's HD. Movement would look robotic with that giant bodysuit. That's why cgi is picked.

Lol, this is literally the most wrong comment on the post.
Looks like many disagree with you but for shits and giggles tell me why I'm wrong...
Cyractacus
Did somebody say plastic?
SirrelSquirrel
Old films were shot on 35mm, which can be scanned at 4K. Many new films are still shot on 35mm.
FloridaTurtle
Can't get any higher def than film. There aren't any pickles, the sharper the focus the sharper the image
eclect0
Not all films are the same. The grainier the film the lower the actual resolution, and I imagine the older the film, the grainier.
LtWilhelm
I mean, you're not wrong, but if you look at a film from the 80s shot on 35mm and scanned in 4k, it still looks like a movie from the 80s
And? Tape for IMAX shooting goes for $1 million per 20 minutes. That's the same thing. Digital is cheaper.
It isn't that much for the film stock, that's the cost for processing to get 20 minutes of finished edited footage.
And traditional film isn't "scanned," it's fed through a projector, and the quality and precision of that device also affects image clarity.
I mean the camera neg is scanned after processing into digital images that can then be worked on, for editing, colour grading and finishing.
Not really the point. The point is that no films were viewed in anything close to modern HD 30+ years ago.
DespiseEveryone
You truly think the movie legend was shot in SD or something? Wow...
SickOfThisCessPool
CGI still looks plastic which is why all the fight scenes take place at night with CG lighting.
Not always. The Apes movies were good cgi, plus cgi gives greater mobility and action for a shot. Compare Burtons Apes movie to the new ones
Bull, Drax was entirely done as makeup for both Guardians of the Galaxy films, looks entirely believable. Red Skull's head was also makeup.
Terrible example. Drax was makeup. Steppenwolf would require full body prosthetics to match his size and it would still look awful in action
And Red Skull was basically just a normal dude in a well made mask.
Perfect examples to show that practical makeup does not end up looking like plastic. And *comic* Steppenwolf is only supposed to be 6' even.
Well we're not talking about the comic. But how would you do the hulk with practical makeup? Same problem applies to Steppenwolf.
Film doesn't have pixels. Film is the highest definition there is
MrDeadsr
Everything has Resolution
bubwubster
Wat... No... Just no
AND the rolling shutter effect from digital processing. Film is absolute, there is no "processing time" in film
The sharper the focus, the sharper the image. Film has atomic Size definition. Each molecule is photo-reactive, so... molecular definition.
Forgive me im retarted. I thought Film as in movies........ Not actual film. I was like wow what a retard when it was I, the retard.
JELLYCRUSHER
Definitely not always the case. Completely depends on the situation, time and budget. (film professional here)
imgurdmf
manhours is a thing people dont wanna think about makeup alone is probly 100s if not 1000s of hours for movies like these 1/2
bacchuss
Also it's easy to screw over companies that do digital effects. Make up you actually have to pay them
Same thing with shooting digital/on film. IMAX tape alone costs $1 million per 20 minutes of 2D shooting. People can moan and complain, but
unless you're a Stanley fucking Kubrick, or some other sort of cinema god, for your sake you don't want to pick the most expensive path.
Hammertulski
I worked with indie bands that wanted to do their album on tape and keep the tapes. It's $5k of 2" GP9, but that's their entire budget.
Makes for a convincing argument to record to tape and transfer to digital, sorta like using mocap and drawing in the rest.
VigorousButtstuff
To say nothing of the stress it places on actors.
notaballoon
I think "because it's cheaper and easier" is an implied and unstatisfactory answer to OP's question
That would be correct. - OP
GoliathSkittles
Exactly, it's cheaper and easier to just do a few powerpoint slides that outline the plot, but that's not the point of a movie.
TeeMee123
CGI also takes a lot of man hours
RedClaws23
Cheaper ones. 50 hours of Robert Downey Jr.'s time are worth a lot more than hiring one extra temp in the CG room
longpantssanchez
Yeah but that’s post production hours not actual production hours, which are usually more expensive.
1000s of hrs to do practical makeup right vs 1000s of hrs to make unrealistic cgi? If they can do it on Face Off on SyFy...
do you think every episode of faceoff is 30mins of actual time? for fucks sake mate each challange is days worth of molds alone
I'm aware of how long it takes. It's completely doable is my point.
and then even IF they used a studio for the props/costumes half of the movie goers are just gonna complain that it looks rubbery and fake2/2
Retromorphic
This. Most movies appeal to the lowest common denominator nowadays... just like the "music" we are forced to listen to
OriginalNameDoNotSteal
Still, nothing beats practical effects with a bit of chi to clean it uo.
Cgi* up*
MichaelJordanAsHimselfInSpaceJam
Exactly. It seems too many times movies only use one or the other.
PossibleSarcasm
Yeah like all the orcs in Lord of the Rings, everyone complained about them. The CGI orcs in The Hobbit were much more palatable.
LillyVixen
I hate the idea that practical FX are inherently better than CGI. It depends a lot on what you're trying to accomplish.
aninvisiblemaniac
well ideally people would learn that the two go hand in hand. example: American horror story knows this well season 1 they have a lot of it
SquirtleSquad420
And now that we have Imax and 4k resolutions it's so much easier to see something as fake, cgi or practical.
Well I mean they spent a shit load on the cgi for this movie but it still looked like shit
Spending money doesn't necessarily mean it's going to look stellar. There's a correlation, not a causation.
Yeah but it still looked like crap, and it just kinda generally was crap.
digitalist1
The best directors blend the two
RemoteControlRox
Mad Max is a great example.
SpaceSphere
Jurassic Park used to be the best example
dazedNconfuzed
It can mean actor is literally sitting in the makeup room 8 hours every day for weeks.
pterodactylptime
Awww, those poor actors making millions of dollars. You mean they had to sit in a chair for weeks? What's the point then? Fuck the fans.
The less time they're sitting in makeup chairs the less you have to pay them.
Demo7
I figure theyd shoot all the scenes that involves the heavy makeup in one swoop, or at least try too, rather than doing it the way you say.
That _is_ one swoop. One scene may take days to shoot; actor may have that makeup for much of the movie.
That's what they're doing. I think you just kinda don't realize how massive amount of time it takes. And other conditions.
bwatne97
I don't understand why this movie is getting so much hate. I thought it was a lot of fun.
smokeyfantastico
One reason is it seems WB still hasn't learned their lessons and still making the same mistakes. It was enjoyable tho just still problems
Plot is pretty meh,but it's indeed enjoyable. It's overhated if you ask me.

it's the fun thing to hate on Justice League because Marvel got the jump on big budget superhero blockbusters
Overhated does sound like a thing that's been going around.

Honestly I'm just glad we're starting to get DC movies with some actual life in them now. WW and JL were a good start DC, keep it going.
TheBigBadBonerBiter
For me, it actually felt like a story straight out of a comic book. I don't get the hate either, it was super fun.
Skullord
I enjoyed it as well. It was also very similar to the animated movie: Justice League War, just without Green Lantern or Shazam.
That's an interesting comparison, I thought JL:War sucked ass.
War definitely suffered from having to introduce too many people. Felt a bit rushed/cramped. I enjoyed it, but I'm easy to please.
Anthroposapien
I enjoyed it too.
won't lie, I got some chills when they quietly played the original superman theme.
reaperhugs
Agreed, that was awesome and unnerving.
It was ok but had the same problem as the rest of DCEU. It tried to establish way too many different things.
It's not getting a lot of "hate." It's getting a lot of "eh, no thanks."
ddot196
Yea. People on here confuse the two. It’s just another “meh” movie from DC. No compelling reason to go watch it.
oh I don't know, I spent a good part of yesterday conversing with someone who felt it was a pile of shit, he/she sure hated this movie

True and his running form made me cringe
yeah it just felt off for some reason. it's no good when the CW can do a better speedster CGI
It wasn't perfect but it was damn entertaining and a lot of good scenes!
and just enough little things like "BooYaa" to make you smile while watching
Loved the BooYaa! that and Supes reminding everyone he is the strongest hero on earth!
"Is this guy still bothering you?" God I loved that.

DylanIsBored
It's a good watch as long as you weren't expecting the Avengers.
True, the bar may be set a little lower in my head for DC so they can catch up to Marvel
ch1m
I just can't get into DC movies. Superman is an immortal god alien and Justice League movie was literally "we can't win, so let's revive...
...the god alien who can do anything he wants at any time."
Did you expect him to stay dead? The Death/Rebirth of Superman is as iconic as it was predictable, there's no way he'd stay dead after BvS.

TrashPandaAddict
Not a spoiler. Supes is on the poster and is #2 billed name.
Gallus1985
Have you seen Aliens or Terminator 2? People are sick of mediocrity. We want movies with themes and a fucking soul.
but I'd say this is at least as good as Thor: Ragnarok which was mostly a popcorn movie, and has far less hate thrown at it. 1/2
it had some adult humor, silly humor, some deep moments (bruce saying supes was more human than him) and some sweet action sequences 2/2
Not even close. Ben Assflap was a bane on JL and every line he delivered was a joke. Was a mess all around with zero redeeming qualities.
Youre just hating to hate, or an idiot. Every line clearly wasnt a joke and there was at least soul and more to the movie than jokes
meh to each their own I guess, have an upvote regardless. personally he's how I'd imagine batman from frank millers the dark knight returns

I mean, you're not wrong, but if you look at a film from the 80s shot on 35mm and scanned in 4k, it still looks like a movie from the 80s
shhep
And? Tape for IMAX shooting goes for $1 million per 20 minutes. That's the same thing. Digital is cheaper.
SirrelSquirrel
It isn't that much for the film stock, that's the cost for processing to get 20 minutes of finished edited footage.
eclect0
And traditional film isn't "scanned," it's fed through a projector, and the quality and precision of that device also affects image clarity.
SirrelSquirrel
I mean the camera neg is scanned after processing into digital images that can then be worked on, for editing, colour grading and finishing.
eclect0
Not really the point. The point is that no films were viewed in anything close to modern HD 30+ years ago.
DespiseEveryone
You truly think the movie legend was shot in SD or something? Wow...
SickOfThisCessPool
CGI still looks plastic which is why all the fight scenes take place at night with CG lighting.
MetSoh
Not always. The Apes movies were good cgi, plus cgi gives greater mobility and action for a shot. Compare Burtons Apes movie to the new ones
modus0
Bull, Drax was entirely done as makeup for both Guardians of the Galaxy films, looks entirely believable. Red Skull's head was also makeup.
MetSoh
Terrible example. Drax was makeup. Steppenwolf would require full body prosthetics to match his size and it would still look awful in action
MetSoh
And Red Skull was basically just a normal dude in a well made mask.
modus0
Perfect examples to show that practical makeup does not end up looking like plastic. And *comic* Steppenwolf is only supposed to be 6' even.
MetSoh
Well we're not talking about the comic. But how would you do the hulk with practical makeup? Same problem applies to Steppenwolf.
FloridaTurtle
Film doesn't have pixels. Film is the highest definition there is
MrDeadsr
Everything has Resolution
bubwubster
Wat... No... Just no
FloridaTurtle
AND the rolling shutter effect from digital processing. Film is absolute, there is no "processing time" in film
FloridaTurtle
The sharper the focus, the sharper the image. Film has atomic Size definition. Each molecule is photo-reactive, so... molecular definition.
bubwubster
Forgive me im retarted. I thought Film as in movies........ Not actual film. I was like wow what a retard when it was I, the retard.
JELLYCRUSHER
Definitely not always the case. Completely depends on the situation, time and budget. (film professional here)
imgurdmf
manhours is a thing people dont wanna think about makeup alone is probly 100s if not 1000s of hours for movies like these 1/2
bacchuss
Also it's easy to screw over companies that do digital effects. Make up you actually have to pay them
shhep
Same thing with shooting digital/on film. IMAX tape alone costs $1 million per 20 minutes of 2D shooting. People can moan and complain, but
shhep
unless you're a Stanley fucking Kubrick, or some other sort of cinema god, for your sake you don't want to pick the most expensive path.
Hammertulski
I worked with indie bands that wanted to do their album on tape and keep the tapes. It's $5k of 2" GP9, but that's their entire budget.
Hammertulski
Makes for a convincing argument to record to tape and transfer to digital, sorta like using mocap and drawing in the rest.
VigorousButtstuff
To say nothing of the stress it places on actors.
notaballoon
I think "because it's cheaper and easier" is an implied and unstatisfactory answer to OP's question
redditmason
That would be correct. - OP
GoliathSkittles
Exactly, it's cheaper and easier to just do a few powerpoint slides that outline the plot, but that's not the point of a movie.
TeeMee123
CGI also takes a lot of man hours
RedClaws23
Cheaper ones. 50 hours of Robert Downey Jr.'s time are worth a lot more than hiring one extra temp in the CG room
longpantssanchez
Yeah but that’s post production hours not actual production hours, which are usually more expensive.
redditmason
1000s of hrs to do practical makeup right vs 1000s of hrs to make unrealistic cgi? If they can do it on Face Off on SyFy...
imgurdmf
do you think every episode of faceoff is 30mins of actual time? for fucks sake mate each challange is days worth of molds alone
redditmason
I'm aware of how long it takes. It's completely doable is my point.
imgurdmf
and then even IF they used a studio for the props/costumes half of the movie goers are just gonna complain that it looks rubbery and fake2/2
Retromorphic
This. Most movies appeal to the lowest common denominator nowadays... just like the "music" we are forced to listen to
OriginalNameDoNotSteal
Still, nothing beats practical effects with a bit of chi to clean it uo.
OriginalNameDoNotSteal
Cgi* up*
MichaelJordanAsHimselfInSpaceJam
And now that we have Imax and 4k resolutions it's so much easier to see something as fake, cgi or practical.
effusus
Well I mean they spent a shit load on the cgi for this movie but it still looked like shit
LillyVixen
Spending money doesn't necessarily mean it's going to look stellar. There's a correlation, not a causation.
effusus
Yeah but it still looked like crap, and it just kinda generally was crap.
digitalist1
The best directors blend the two
RemoteControlRox
digitalist1
Mad Max is a great example.
SpaceSphere
Jurassic Park used to be the best example
dazedNconfuzed
It can mean actor is literally sitting in the makeup room 8 hours every day for weeks.
pterodactylptime
Awww, those poor actors making millions of dollars. You mean they had to sit in a chair for weeks? What's the point then? Fuck the fans.
dazedNconfuzed
The less time they're sitting in makeup chairs the less you have to pay them.
Demo7
I figure theyd shoot all the scenes that involves the heavy makeup in one swoop, or at least try too, rather than doing it the way you say.
dazedNconfuzed
That _is_ one swoop. One scene may take days to shoot; actor may have that makeup for much of the movie.
shhep
That's what they're doing. I think you just kinda don't realize how massive amount of time it takes. And other conditions.
bwatne97
I don't understand why this movie is getting so much hate. I thought it was a lot of fun.
smokeyfantastico
One reason is it seems WB still hasn't learned their lessons and still making the same mistakes. It was enjoyable tho just still problems
KingKrown
Plot is pretty meh,but it's indeed enjoyable. It's overhated if you ask me.
urhedsonfire
it's the fun thing to hate on Justice League because Marvel got the jump on big budget superhero blockbusters
bwatne97
Overhated does sound like a thing that's been going around.
krapmyself
Internet parroting. Haters gonna hate, as they say.
thealex2011350
was it great? nah. but it was enjoyable. kicking DC movies on the internet is just the cool thing to do (excepr SS, hate that all you want)
Nomulus
Honestly I'm just glad we're starting to get DC movies with some actual life in them now. WW and JL were a good start DC, keep it going.
TheBigBadBonerBiter
For me, it actually felt like a story straight out of a comic book. I don't get the hate either, it was super fun.
Skullord
I enjoyed it as well. It was also very similar to the animated movie: Justice League War, just without Green Lantern or Shazam.
TheBigBadBonerBiter
That's an interesting comparison, I thought JL:War sucked ass.
Skullord
War definitely suffered from having to introduce too many people. Felt a bit rushed/cramped. I enjoyed it, but I'm easy to please.
Anthroposapien
I enjoyed it too.
bwatne97
won't lie, I got some chills when they quietly played the original superman theme.
reaperhugs
Agreed, that was awesome and unnerving.
kalinroar
It was ok but had the same problem as the rest of DCEU. It tried to establish way too many different things.
EarthDragon2189
It's not getting a lot of "hate." It's getting a lot of "eh, no thanks."
ddot196
Yea. People on here confuse the two. It’s just another “meh” movie from DC. No compelling reason to go watch it.
bwatne97
oh I don't know, I spent a good part of yesterday conversing with someone who felt it was a pile of shit, he/she sure hated this movie
ChrisCrayon
Agreed, especially after seeing Thor 3. They pack a lot in but the DC universe movies haven't been going on as long as Marvel
realmdweller
What movie is in the bottom picture?
Wasitoverwhenthegermansbombedpearlharbor
New Justice League movie, bottom pick is the bad guy
Fejerro
Too Many Cooks
Cheruru
Wow, that's a trip down memory lane :)
hawkshot2001
It takes a lot to make a stew,
Schmapplesauce
Especially for me and you,
thecraziestofturtles
Firs thalf was way off. Second half was awesome.
SquirtleSquad420
It would of blown me away if I haven't watched 50 super hero movies in the last 20 years.
bwatne97
true, it is a pretty saturated market at the moment
AdamSmasher
Exactly. I thought it was great.
Tyrannotron
If this is what people are finding to complain about, then it sounds like it must be pretty good.
Wasitoverwhenthegermansbombedpearlharbor
Wasn't terrible, better than BvsS, and flash seems pretty cool
TheBigBadBonerBiter
Flash would flip between actually being funny and trying way too hard to be funny.
Wasitoverwhenthegermansbombedpearlharbor
True and his running form made me cringe
bwatne97
yeah it just felt off for some reason. it's no good when the CW can do a better speedster CGI
Coolbacca
It wasn't perfect but it was damn entertaining and a lot of good scenes!
bwatne97
and just enough little things like "BooYaa" to make you smile while watching
Coolbacca
Loved the BooYaa! that and Supes reminding everyone he is the strongest hero on earth!
TheBigBadBonerBiter
"Is this guy still bothering you?" God I loved that.
ILiekrocks
Perhaps the people hating it had fun once and therefore hate all fun
IsACouchASeat
It was okay, but the CGI was atrocious.
BopNiblets
The moustache cover up was so fucking annoying
UnsolicitedRichardPicture
You mean hilarious.
DylanIsBored
It's a good watch as long as you weren't expecting the Avengers.
bwatne97
True, the bar may be set a little lower in my head for DC so they can catch up to Marvel
ch1m
I just can't get into DC movies. Superman is an immortal god alien and Justice League movie was literally "we can't win, so let's revive...
ch1m
...the god alien who can do anything he wants at any time."
TheBigBadBonerBiter
Did you expect him to stay dead? The Death/Rebirth of Superman is as iconic as it was predictable, there's no way he'd stay dead after BvS.
DYMongoose
I downvoted to keep the spoiler hidden, but you're not wrong.
TrashPandaAddict
Not a spoiler. Supes is on the poster and is #2 billed name.
Gallus1985
Have you seen Aliens or Terminator 2? People are sick of mediocrity. We want movies with themes and a fucking soul.
bwatne97
but I'd say this is at least as good as Thor: Ragnarok which was mostly a popcorn movie, and has far less hate thrown at it. 1/2
bwatne97
it had some adult humor, silly humor, some deep moments (bruce saying supes was more human than him) and some sweet action sequences 2/2
Gallus1985
Not even close. Ben Assflap was a bane on JL and every line he delivered was a joke. Was a mess all around with zero redeeming qualities.
KraftyKev
Youre just hating to hate, or an idiot. Every line clearly wasnt a joke and there was at least soul and more to the movie than jokes
bwatne97
meh to each their own I guess, have an upvote regardless. personally he's how I'd imagine batman from frank millers the dark knight returns
