Well that took a turn for the worse...
Great.. time to start placing things up high.. Seriously, it's been Zone A and B evacuations for 2 days, and now they spring this on us late at night, well beyond the point of leaving in time.
Real Floridians know how it is.
Bit too late to evacuate. I've done what I can to help keep stuff dry if I get some water in the house. Got supplies, food and water, generator and gas.
Welp, we'll see how this goes. Good luck everybody.
UPDATE: We all good. Storm turn a last min dive north and dropped in strength pretty quickly as it came closer. So nothing major here.

My mother-in-law is alone in Zone A on the barrier islands near Sarasota and refuses to leave. She stayed for the last one and ended up with 4 feet of water on the first floor. Everyone has been begging her to leave, but she won't, and we're all terrified for her.

My dad and his neighbors are in Zone B, he says about half are staying. I live out of state so I can't make him leave, and his house is up on a hill so floodwaters and the storm surge hopefully won't reach the house. If they do, the next door neighbor is a two story. The wind is concerning. I told someone earlier today that I'm not worried about him and I wasn't then but I'm starting to be. I've been in four hurricanes myself but this one isn't looking good.

BBC was reporting 200 mph winds for Milton. If you take the current hurricane scale and extrapolate it out as to when you hit a new number on the scale, that would make Milton a category 6 storm. Things are going to suck. :(

There are 2 big reasons to not add a new category.
1) Category 5 already means “total destruction” and you can’t really go worse than that.
2) adding a category after 5 makes 5 feel less disastrous and some people would take cat 5 storms less seriously because that’s just human nature.
Everyone should already be evacuated for a cat 5, what would adding 6 do?

As a Brit holidaying in Florida at Disney. There was no official communication from Disney until about 12 hours ago. When they said they were shutting the parks tomorrow. Pretty much every Disney faceache group my wife is on is all" 'welp, good luck, Disney never close the parks'. We've got food, water, and powerbanks charged, wondering what to do next. I'm pretending to be all chill about it, but really, it's squeaky bum time.

Been through a few myself OP. The time leading up to it is hard because of anticipation mixed with not a whole lot to do equals time slowing down to molasses. Hopefully it will have lost some intensity by the time it gets to Disney.
One piece of advice is that commercial type toilets may not flush if systems go down. The whole flush with a bucket of water doesn’t work.

Hurricane is an endurance test. Mental endurance. Get some sleep and nap before landfall. Store some water. Prepare for the wildest rain storm the planet has to offer.
Big picture your on vacation and won't lose your home. So as long as your not swimming through water, in a car on the road, or out during the hurricane at all you should be fine. Getting rescued is not the worst thing that can happen.

As a Floridian living in the UK, I'm sorry you're having to experience this. I've been through too many hurricanes in my life. Andrew was the worst, even though I was in Broward County at the time (Category 5 that scoured Homestead, Florida off the map).
Best advie is to stay away from windows and doors, bathtub with a matress over it (hurricanes do spawn tornadoes), make sure you have your passport and ID and mobile phone in zip-locked bags on your person at all times.

Fr fr, best advice, is to get as far east as you can (the storm will lose intensity going over land), get high up, get in a STRONG building, slant a mattress over you, the slant will protect you in case the roof falls in (hopefully) have a weeks worth of food and water, and if your not flooded in, get to a different state soon. You won't have power for a few weeks most likely so if you can travel it's the best option.

Sounds like a good time to rewatch a couple Disney movies while you all stay off the roads. Watching local news is a trip too. They send all the reporters out if it’s not bad out. I was visiting Disney in 2022 when they closed the parks. I think it was either a category 1 or tropical storm while passing over Orlando and it wasn’t bad at all

Thanks for the link, we've been using that one amongst many. It's been difficult to know what website is information and which are political baiting. Stay away from windows. Stairwells are the most reinforced part of buildings (usually). Bathtubs will make you feel safe when the building is getting ripped apart.

Yeah, the stairwells on our building are exposed. We're in the Allstar resort. But I've scoped out the bathroom/tub. Disney have sent an update that depending on the forecasts, they'll do different things: from issuing 'survival kits' to moving us to more sheltered area. Honestly, their chilled out attitude is reassuring.

1) hurricanes spawn tornadoes. 2) hurricane winds can be faster and more destructive than a tornado, and they last a lot longer, so it is more important to keep yourself uninjured than it is to keep a tub full of fresh water. That full tub won't help if a trampoline support barrels into the living room at 140 mph and cracks your skull open. But added walls and the mattress may save your life.

Take the food, water, blankets, etc. Go to a concrete building with preferably 5 stories, go to a stairwell, and go to at least the third floor, as the storm surge is predicted to be around 20 feet (I don't know about the location you're in). If you survive, go home and discuss with a barrister about suing Disney. That's outrageous. I'm so sorry, contempted.

As a long time Floridian, Disney is not going to have storm surge, it’s nowhere near the coast. There may be flooding but in previous hurricanes they are normally one of the safest places. They often stage linemen and other response workers in disneys massive parking lots and I think in one of the recent storms they were using their empty hotel rooms as relief shelters for people who were without utilities/homes. You could look at suing Disney but idk hopefully you haven’t used Disney+.
