For some reason, the narration is coming from the driver of the black pickup, but the camera is from the semi truck. The pickup driver believes he had the right of way, which to my knowledge is legally incorrect and also common-sense incorrect.

I see this mentality all the time... people mistakenly thinking they have the right of way and then forcing an accident because they think "right of way" beats out physics... "I had right of way and therefore the other vehicle has to magically let me go no matter what physics says"... almost weekly there's an accident nearby at an overpass where a driver turning left thinks they have right of way over oncoming traffic going straight. They turn in front of them and get T-boned.

Seems to check out... the pickup that had shit flying out of the bed this morning on the highway was black (with the standard "Salt life", Punisher and "we the people" stickers on the glass)... Asshole was going 80 when he past me and several lawn signs (with the wire legs) came sailing out and hit my windshield... now I got some nice scratches on the glass and A-pillar. Fuckwit.

Merges like this without an acceleration lane are inherently dangerous, even when merging from the right. Way too little time to find a gap in traffic to slip into. And if you can't do it safely you what, stop and wait to pull out and accelerate directly on the highway? Seems like a recipe for getting rear ended by someone on their phone. But building a few hundred yards of extra acceleration lane costs more so guess that's why US has these.

This! After years and dozens of not hundreds of accidents they are extending a merge lane near my work. It's a sharp 180 onto a short, uphill merge lane. Technically the highway has the right of way, but if people don't slow or move over no one will be able to get on.

US tractor trailers can have up to 80000 lbs gross weight and I'm sure there are scenarios where they are permitted to go over that. 40 tons has a lot of momentum. Plus it's reasonable to expect self-preservation in others. Apparently not as reasonable to expect the ability to drive well.

The truck owner might be upset with them for not letting them in, but it's on the pickup driver to figure out how to fit into traffic, not just pull out there and figure people will make way. It might have worked for them before, but it didn't work that time

Merging doesn’t grant right of way. If you can’t judge speed and distance appropriately then you shouldn’t be behind a wheel. I’m no TT driver but it is clearly moving faster and overtaking, decelerating would make no significant difference for the vehicle size. You also don’t know what’s happening behind the TT so assuming he is a dick for not braking means you are also a dick. I can’t begin to count the number of times I’e seen some moron try to merge at ~20 less than the lane they are joining

You yield to the traffic already on the highway/freeway you’re merging onto. It’s your responsibility to either speed up or slow down.
It takes considerable time/energy for 80,000 lbs to slow down.
The pickup is at fault, not the semi.

He's supposed to drive safely. He didn't even have to brake, just let off the accelerator. They have merge signs and a good driver anticipates merges in particular, because that is where most of the accidents happen on the highway.

It’s not the semi’s responsibility to try to account for a bad driver. Maintaining a constant speed is better than slowing down. If the pickup driver wasn’t brain dead, he would have sped up or slowed down.
It’s 100% the responsibility of the merging driver to merge safely and yield to the traffic.
