Shortly after Counter-Strike went to steam, valve put ads in the maps and on the scoreboard. I think they eventually took them out though.
You also still get ads when connecting to a half-life mod server.

Yep, as long as you restart steam once every 48-72 hours, no problems. If I've left it open for days it can get finicky.
