Because USA didn't have a reliable cannon for aircrafts. They jammed easily and didn't have recocking mechanism for wing mounted guns.

The British mounted a forward firing 6 pounder (57mm) Anti Tank gun on a number of Mosquito's. Apparently they were really effective.

That aerocobra has a 37mm in the nose. They were pretty early on but had poor air performance.

They're glorious in War Thunder. Pop a bomber with 1 good hit from a kilometer or more away. Straight up disintegrates anything smaller.

The P-38 was never designed as a Fighter! The spec called for a Hi-Altitude Interceptor. Read that as a plane to Intercept incoming Bombers.
