Out of my way! My people need me to stop Godzilla!

Heavy machinery tire, the hulk of the rubber world.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Heavy Machinery Tire deems your ramp unworthy.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

So I should put heavy machinery tyres on my mini.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yes! Just a little bit of axle and suspension work and regear the rear end a bit deeper and you'll be fine.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh sure, when they do it, it's "science". When I do it, it's "theft" and "destruction of property".

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Rico did you fortify the ramp?

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I thought that was Sergei's job?

Plot twist : the heavy machinery tire did not stop there, and killed 31 innocent japanese people before its anger was appeased.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

While this seems like the sort of thing that would be on Japanese TV, it also looks like a completely stupid amount of fun.

11 years ago | Likes 901 Dislikes 0

But the "supercar tire", new, assuming it's the rear tire, is >$1000. I don't even know how expensive the F1 tire would be...

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Video makes it better with the dramatic music and and excited announcer. "Supotsu karu no taiya SUTATO!"

11 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

And the uplifting "Friends Forever"-esque music at the end really tires it in together.

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

You say that as if those don't normally go together.

11 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

This needs a points system and submission to the Olympics

Nope. Goofing around.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Which is like a lot of science. Source: actual scientist here.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

this is how they test EVERY SINGLE TIRE IN JAPAN before it's put onto a car

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I guess I should buy Bridgestones or Yokohamas nest time

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's Bridgestone or nothing.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

TIL I have no tires

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

FYI, this show is called spring of trivia or trivia no izumi, and they're basically Japanese myth busters. Definitely worth a watch

96km/hr & 29m, 126km/hr & 30m, 131km/hr & 31m, 137 km/hr & 44m, 101km/hr & 21m, WREKT & 141km/hr & 40m. In that order.

Heavy machine tire: "FUCK YOUR RAMP"

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I want to do this.

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

This was actually really interesting, thank you, OP

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

That ending song suspiciously reminded me of Evangelion...

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I used control F to find anyone else who thought the same, hello fellow Evangelion fan!

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

TIL Heavy machinery tire is like the Hulk of tires!

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Probably more steel belting than tire in there :D

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The Judges would have also accepted "The Juggernaught of tires."

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The last run reminds me of an incident that occurred at a motocross race. We rolled a tire into the pits from the top of the hill climb...

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Wrought complete and utter havoc...

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Once a something gets spin stabilized it tends to keep going in a straight line.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Its like if the tire is heavier, it goes faster down the ramp or something.

11 years ago | Likes 161 Dislikes 26

Not true. Acceleration of gravity is constant, whereas these tires would be more affected by moment of inertia.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

It's the force that increases with a more massive tire. F=mA. Bigger m, same A = more F. TL;DR bigger tire = rekt ramp.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Tall, skinny and heavy.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No. Some energy gets lost by friction and air resistance, but some also gets converted into angular momentum instead of velocity. (1/2)

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That's actually pretty inaccurate by itself. I'd go into the details of what's actually going on, but it would take several comments.

11 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 3

I'll just sum it up by saying Newton's Bears.

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Acceleration due to gravity is a constant. Rotational inertia and friction make the difference here.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

*Your high school physics teacher removes glasses, sighs and pinches nose as the vibrations from this statement echo through the unverse*

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There's a tradeoff too. You want less surface area to decrease air resistance. But with enough weight you can offset it.

11 years ago | Likes 45 Dislikes 2

Get a flywheel. MAX SPEED ACHIEVED

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

yeah...science, bitch.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Whie Sectional density and air friction plays a role, rolling resistance also plays a role.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The have various coefficients of friction (see F1 tire, it's "sticky")

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

yes, and like the more grip you have, the slower the tire goes

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Irrelevant test is irrelevant.

11 years ago | Likes 239 Dislikes 21

How dare you suggest that the timeless sport of tire jumping is irrelevant.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

It's relevant to my interests (shit going fast, shit breaking other shit, sweet jumps).

11 years ago | Likes 68 Dislikes 1

It's entertaining

11 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Now I know not to drive with heavy machine tires while I do a jump off a wooden ramp

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I'm sure the Mythbusters could come up with a legitimate (sounding) explanation

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

And an additional test involving explosives.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It actually shows how well certain tires stay on track, the economy one pulled to the right quite a lot. Also it shows how fast each one go

11 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 7

Yeah but look at the shitty unevenness of the ramp - the economy tire could have just been unlucky. Plus it's the skinniest of them all

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

A good demonstration of rotating mass and momentum .

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Not at all, the f1 tire goes slower and does not go as far. It shows the superior grip of a tire needed to handle the g's of a formula 1 car

11 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 8

I think the rigidity of the tires without inflation might have a lot to do with this as well

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Its also much lighter than the other tires.

11 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

But compare supercar with economy...

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Exactly what I was thinking. The tire needs to stick to the ground and it did well.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Intro physics problem. They have different initial potential energies, heavy ones go faster...

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Well okay it cancels but they all have different moments of inertia leading to different rotational energy. Not a good test.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yup. A much better scientific test would be to get tires of same diameter, then vary the tread for some tests and the material for others.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Or just put them on cars and test them way since rolling down ramps isn't the typical use of a tire.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That would only be relevant if the ramp was slippery and the tires couldn't spin.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 5

Incorrect. Mu is mu. No matter the surface coefficient of friction, different tire C.O.F. will react accordingly

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I have no idea what you just said, but it sounded all awesome and sciency

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Physicist to help! Mu(µ)= coefficient of friction. Very simply put, multiply weight by mu to get force of friction you gotta overcome.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A high C.o.F (typically denoted by the greek letter Mu) means more grip. Ice on Steel has a low C.o.F, Rubber on Asphalt is on the upper end

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

CoF is dependant on type of surfaces and slipperiness, so it might beat the other tires in this test, but lose on a slippery surface.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Very true, but that's not what that dude(tte) was saying

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Psh, we'll see what you say when my camaro is pulling sick jumps with truck tires

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Lost my self at the last one omg that ramp got wrecked. Lol

11 years ago | Likes 2155 Dislikes 14

Glad I watched before I read this, cuz I had the same reaction. That was glorious.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Had the same thing happen to me with OP's mom

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Read this before I saw the last one. Still lol'd.

11 years ago | Likes 100 Dislikes 0

I lol'd harder.

rekt

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That is very Karma Police of you to do.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I never imagined I would laugh so hard at a tire breaking a wooden ramp. Now I know anything is possible

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I made a .gif of it after the ramp gets rekt for you http://imgur.com/Zt92z9Z

11 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Fuck yo ramp!

11 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

good thing they didn't do that one first xD

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

11 years ago | Likes 296 Dislikes 3

Scientists enjoy stupid fun too.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

i didn't see them write anything down...

11 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

Don't you see the recorded speeds and distances?

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Obviously they did, some sort of "scientific" number showed up in the screen.

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

They did however collect video evidence, which is basically a high tech method of writing stuff down.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The only difference between screwing off and science is writing things down

11 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

With a lab coat and clip board you can get away with almost anything.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

On a post from 2 years ago?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Probably... I can't claim it to be original.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

exactly what I was going to comment

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Afterwards they watched the videos & had a wank. Scientists.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well I'm pretty sure these ones are something other than perverts...

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hey, he's wearing a lab coat, isn't he?

11 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 0

Get inside the tire.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Let's do this!!!

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hmm this was my first time commenting on a user submitted post that made it to the front page. Neat.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I dunno, you might get tired after a while.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Joe we're going to need you to come in tomorrow, we gotta roll 37 of these tires outta here

11 years ago | Likes 40 Dislikes 0

"Im on my way!" "No, tomorrow, Joe, Brian's got the night-shift." "Fuck Brian!"

11 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

"Well, hello Joe and welcom to tire-science corp. We'd like you to carry those big ass tires up to the top of the ramp, nothing more!"

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If I at least got to watch them get pushed down the ramp, I could do that all day long.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Go to your nearest ski jump in the summer with tires and do this.

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Hmm, sadly there hasn't been that much snow where I live so there aren't any open ski jumps.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Where are you from?

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I actually live in Alaska.... Its been a horrible year for snow.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well then, you wouldn't mind calculating the angular momentum of the last tire as well as the force at which it impacted the ramp with.(1/2)

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

And then compute the stress that the ramp endured in this wreckage, would you?

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Ill give you some numbers to start you off. a=-9.8m/s^2, Vi=141 km/h, and the slope seems to be at a 55 degree angle. Good luck!

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

What is the radius and mass of the tire?

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hard to tell. But lets just say 50cm radius and mass is 40 kg.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0
