I wonder how they are accessed. I was in NYC recently and I didnt want to toss my trash out because each one required lifting a grubby handle to open it.
Sharia is the religious and moral legal framework of Islam, derived from the Quran and the Hadith... 27 virgins and all that stuff. Don't conflate someone doing a great job with, and minimising, a bloody dangerous religious practice.
This. It was never about fighting off religious-based law. They just wanted THEIR book. And also, it was just an easy scare tactic they didn't believe in the first place.
Public sanitation and hygiene is actually pretty important in the teachings of the prophet, peace be upon him. Not that I expect the hacks stoking American sectarian infighting to actually know that. This hyperbolic nonsense is exactly the kind of "cut off your nose to spite your face" reaction from the political movement that is killing their base supporters by gutting rural public health and burning the planet alive just to "own the libs".
Which I'm fine with, there are many laudable tenants of Christianity I support as well, such as caring for the weak and vulnerable. It's no problem as long as it remains the secular elements for the public benefit of all. It's such a shame nuance is the first victim of social media, especially in modern political discourse.
People kept telling me that Mamdani was going to be bringing Jihad to NYC. But I haven't yet had it clarified if that's supposed to be al-Jihad al-Akbar, the greater, inward-facing struggle to improve one's self, and we'll all be trying to become better as a society and do right by the poorest among us, or al-Jihad al-Asghar, the lesser, outward-facing struggle, and we'll be putting Boston and its Red Socked infidels to the sword.
I visited Stockholm in 2019. It was the cleanest city I ever saw. No graffiti and no trash on the ground. Not only was it civic pride, but there were trash cans EVERYWHERE. Around a statue in a park, 18 trash cans. I always felt part of the litter problem in America, is people get tired of carrying their trash because they can't find a trash can, so they just throw it on the ground. Another reason, is that some people are simply awful. Just my opinion.
They didn't really have any bins previously or at least not enough to handle the amount of trash being disposed. You could probably easily find pics of mounds of trash sitting along the streets of NYC waiting to be picked up. The city got a reputation for it. So now they're just getting these cans out there so at least it won't look as bad (not to mention make it harder for scavengers like rats/etc. to get at trash).
Ahhh, so it's not that they're particularly better, just that they needed them and if they were making them they may as well make them more clean looking
I would imagine the City got with the company that picks up the trash and said "We want everything in bins, what design do we need to standardize and go with that works best for your trucks/workers". So yeah, they may be "better" in that pick up may be more efficient and etc. And it will also help with the rat problem as well as the other poster mentioned.
yeah, that makes a lot of sense. I think the main context I was missing was that they didn't have sufficient stuff for the task, but my brain was thinking they were simply replacing existing trash cans.
It helps deal with the enormous rat problem, too. Rat sightings are down citywide so far this year since this super common sense thing started. Brooklyn 2 (DUMBO/Brooklyn Heights) is down 48%. In West Harlem/Morningside Heights, where Empire Bins were installed first, 311 rat sightings dropped 25%. They're going for full containerization by 2031.... Now we just have to figure out how to deal with the disgusting, diseased RATS contaminating congress & the orange house.
You knew an idiot who happened to also be Muslim. Don’t mix both, that air pressure thing came from the idiot. Source: I am Muslim and I fully believe in science and those two are not contradicting
Most of us Kuffar only know about what is Fard and Haram, it sounds sensational, so it ends up in Muslim caricatures on TV and rants on news from pundits that don't know any better, or worse, pundits that do. One of my first jobs was working for a Persian when 9/11 happened, it was a unique perspective for me, growing up in Atlanta.
In some states women have to wait to be at risk to losing their life until they can get abortion for a ectopic pregnancy. It could be done safely beforehand.
There are no previous bins. Which is insane imo, how the fuck do you have one of largest cities on earth, in a wealthy nation, and people are supposed to simply drop trash bags on the curb?
How has nobody else done this in the past decades?
Wait... these aren't an improvement over an old design, they're the introduction of dumpsters where there was literally NOTHING before? This ENTIRE TIME??
I can certainly appreciate why that would be well-received by residents, but WOW.
First time hearing about this whole thing was from penguinz0 and yeah, apparently it's taking away the "character" and "humanity" of NYC by not having trash bags everywhere lol https://youtu.be/oduqJe84VC0
Yep. Republicans have been calling New York a craphole for years in part because of the garbage. That's the "character" they expect to see and he's taking away one of the things they like to whine about.
So it seems. Yet every action Mamdani takes, the 1%ers run to FOX crying that "This is it. All the rich are gonna leave NYC over this." And then, they don't. Buncha pearl-clutching whiners.
They all said they'd leave NYC if Mamdani got elected. Well, that happened and they're all sitting around crying about everything. Can't somebody send them some bus/train/plane schedules to help get them started? Uber/Lyft coupons perhaps? Anything to get their asses moving.

Yes. Huge piles. 10 bags piled up in a mound outside every apartment building, restaurant, and office.

Oh, this explains why I saw three articles bitching about new trash cans today.

Been to NY the amount of rubish on the streets at night outside shops was an eye opener

Robot trash cans? You guys are hilarious.

They're not robots, they're uniformly designed so a machine, and maybe one day a robot, can easily handle it.

Can anyone explain what makes these special or why it's an improvement?
I'm not an expert in dumpsters or garbage cans. Lots of people seem to be celebrating this, but all I see is that they're a different shape?
JustCallMeDeer
I was curious and searched; lightweight (vs steel), smart locked by ID card, have shutter lids, and are a rat resistant design.
thedudeman519
Well here in NYC buildings just like the garbage up in the street .
Doesn't look good and is probably the opposite of sanitary
LangleyofMappe
This is what New Yorkers had to deal with. Just rubbish bags on the sidewalks. So as you can see huge improvement now.
