SoundBlaster?

Never could play these games due to nausea. A few decades later I had found a game with FOV settings. Increasing the FOV to 100ish enabled me to play more FPS games.

HMI module Alpha Humana

Fuck I'm old. I remember the old commands. Can't remember many of the games names though.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh I didn't know old CRT's emitted some x-rays.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Good times.

My dad had this game on his pc.

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

With "low radiation" I thought the game was "thermonuclear war"

1 month ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Ah, the generation, that was forced to become experts for gaming..

A 3.5” AND a 5.25” drive? Wooo whose Mr. Fancy-Pants!

1 month ago | Likes 71 Dislikes 1

If you have an investment in games in 5.25 format, it was necessary.

1 month ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Modern machines upgrade to the smaller format.

1 month ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

And a sound card! Us plebs had to make do with PC speaker.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Anyone who had PC back then certainly was no pleb. Even your run of the mill IBM-compatible was not cheap.

Let’s do Ironman

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The old ways.

1 month ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

Damn, blast from the past

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Holy shit, just got a flashback to the early 90s, i did the same thing! My mum set passwords on several games, but I did just start them through DOS like this

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Just make a .bat file in the root of your C: drive that starts wolf3d from the correct directory. It takes like fifteen seconds, and you can do the same for any game that you start from the command line.

1 month ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Or just access anything quickly with Norton Commander.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Psh…
I used to create bootdisks with custom autoexec.bat and config.sys files to just allocate resources to the games I was playing.

Some use came out of all those ‘low-end’ 720k disks at least.

I was there, three thousand years ago. Props to the greybeards.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

so many years ago I did this... It took me overnight to download the game

1 month ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Yep, I still remember downloading it from one of my favorite BBS's, and playing it that very first time at my dining room table at 3am, cuz my body was on a night shift schedule from my work, and everyone else in the house was asleep. It was the first time a game ever made the hair on my neck stand on end.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nonono. Not many years ago. Many years ago, you got this game on 💾 from that shady guy. If you downloaded it, it's a few years ago.

1 month ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Incorrect.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Unless you were dialing into a BBS.

1 month ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

No, we didn't get it on disk. I downloaded it over my college's Internet access from a file stored at another university.

1 month ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Try MISSION IMPOSSIBLE on the commadore 6000. Epic waste of time. lol

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

i had to load a game from a casette on my first pc. Schneider CPC464

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

ZX81 representing here... We had a cassette interface, but it was pretty unreliable. The ZX Spectrum was a whole lot better in that regard.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Is the boss mob Trump ?

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It better be Doom...oh, that's good too.

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That there is Doom's daddy, you show some respeck!

1 month ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

my first experience on a computer was changing to the a drive to load a game on a disk.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Who are the bad guys? /s

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And kids these days get mental breakdowns if they slip below 60 fps.

1 month ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I remember Quake 2. Fired it up again in the mid-nothings, when I still had a big CRT. Would do 1920*1280, but set the resolution to half that (for TFT/LCD only, that was eminently possible). On one of the Nvidia cards (possibly TNT 4) it could havver out 200FPS. Was gloriously smooth. Yeah, graphical requirements went way up, but it was glorious seeing the bug-out eyes of a PS2 owner seeing the silkiness.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh fancy, you had a sounblaster! (Ouch im so old?)

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I remember playing this game...but I didn't like that I had to kill German Shepherds in the game...hearing them whimper when they died made me stop playing the game right then and there...never completed this game...

1 month ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 2

It should be possible to find that death sound in the files and replace it, maybe with a clown honk

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

welcome to the club. i hate playing monsterhunter. killing animals for better equipment is pervert.

1 month ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Gotta love that 40 MHz clock

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I remember when killing nazis was cool.

1 month ago | Likes 189 Dislikes 1

Brother, it's still the coolest.

1 month ago | Likes 56 Dislikes 0

Its pretty timeless.

1 month ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

Still is, but it used to be too

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Your Communism is showing.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I could tell by wolf3d

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Don't worry. It still is.

1 month ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

It was. But it also contributed towards a culture that forgets what spawned the nazi world. If you avoid working with reality, you create nazis and other forms of empires. Empires are social adaptions to a cthullian finite world in which a exponential (life) bumps against the finite line that is the ressource limit. If you do not find a way to peacefully handle that- and not decomplexify, every move to fight the nazis, also feeds the nazis by sending the world more into a regression.

Someone did a summer AP philosophy course.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I feel so much dumber from reading this

1 month ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Nazism isn't a result of Malthusian limits, it's an emergent property of combining systemic ignorance with nationalism and the cultivation of demagoguery around the scapegoating of marginalized demographic populations.

1 month ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

It's okay to punch nazis.

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Bet you think everyone's a bad day away from becoming the Joker or whatever too.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Achtung!
Those early 90s were a fun time for DOS gaming. I still get nostalgic when I hear AdLib from those classic games.

1 month ago | Likes 107 Dislikes 0

1 month ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I remember when I upgraded from my AdLib to a SoundBlaster Pro. Stereo sound and digital sound effects! I didn't think it could better than that. :)

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

...and clicky keyboards

1 month ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

The easter eggs were awesome too... found one in the sound settings once, for some reason I kept playing the test-sound, suddenly it pkayed "enjoying ourselves, are we" or something along those lines

1 month ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

It actually said "Enyoing yourself?" after a few times, and then if you insisted "It doesn't get any better than this".
Also, 220h, IRQ 5, DMA 1. If you know you know 😂

1 month ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

... I do, but I was on IRQ 7 ...... and Sound Blaster Pro

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yup, 5 or 7 were the most common settings

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

This was from Warcraft 2! I still remember doing it. It happens after you install it. There is an option to test the sound card

1 month ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

YES! That's it! .... excellent!

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Your sound card works perfectly.

Your sound card works perfectly.

Your sound card works perfectly.

It doesn’t get any better than this!

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I love that age of gaming where the games didn't take themselves so seriously

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ad Lib *and* Sound Blaster....what are you? Rich?

1 month ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 3

I know right? My PC speaker was beep booping sad Leisure Suit Larry noises

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You are just ignorant, Sound Blaster had Adlib. It only requires one card. I used my summer job money to buy Sound Blaster 2.0 for 700 marks.

1 month ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

I bought an I/O card to plug a mouse into my 386 dx40.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My comment was just meant to be a joke :) I also bought a Sound Blaster in the 90's. Still have it, and several more. If I remember Sound Blaster had "Ad Lib", but Ad Lib the company was around before Sound Blaster as a totally separate thing.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh and IBM PS/2 (my parent's computer) had Disney Sound Source. It was supported like 1% of the games and this was one.

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

It was basically the same thing than Covox, just a simple resistor ladder DAC. I think it was more supported with demos/trackers.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Scream Tracker did not support, at least directly. Did not try via covox support, since my new and shiny SB 2.0 was widely supported :D
