A gigabyte (GB) refers to the SI units of bytes which step up in factors of 1000. A gibibyte (GiB) is the IEC unit that multiplies by 1024

In the sense that there's 8 bits to a byte? Yes. But the source of 1024 is that 2^10=1024; 1000 is not a power of 2 and so is less useful.
