Frenns, if you like really well done and easy to understand science vids, this one on rainbows can't be beat. Just caught it last week and I learned a ton from it: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=24GfgNtnjXc
These various effects are caused by refraction & reflection through ice crystals (as opposed to rainbows, which're caused by refraction & reflection through raindrops).
I'm not certain on this, but I think the extra bows have something to do with a layer of ice particles bouncing the light around a few extra times. Would be amazing to see this in person
Those sound about right, but they weren’t just on the sides. They made a sort of arching zigzag pattern to the horizon. We were at altitude and it was cold.
That's really cool. Of note though - the video in the OP actually shows *additional* features beyond that pic! E.g. an additional "rainbows" on each side of the halo, causing something that looks like a reverse-direction arc on the bottom sides, and also an additional mustache-shaped double-arc inside the main halo. I hope someone got a wide-angle pic of this instance in the OP.

That had to have been a very cold day...also very cool, I mean the sundogs and rainbows...that's neato shit right there.

I saw a video of a video caught from a high enough view and it formed a perfect circle. No idea what level of elevation that requires

My brain thought this video was old at first. Then I saw the newer vehicles. Stupid snow

This bug only occurs during an update.

Veritasium has a recent video that went into pretty crazy detail regarding how rainbows work.

Veritasium just did an awesome explanation of why rainbows happen, although after watching I still am not 100% sure why. https://youtu.be/24GfgNtnjXc?si=UWPKQdM2ISIXluxW

So it's very cold where this is.

At first I thought i was seeing radiation but realized it was snowfall

Should take 360 picture
huffnpuff72
That's incredible. Is it a common thing where it's icy like that or something ultra rare?

Is the matrix glitching? Is this a reset? I'm.all for it

Nah, the lens is cracked and needs replacement.

They're just looking at the wrong part of the skybox, the one that you shouldn't look where the seams are all wonky.
bluetoaster42
Nah, it just means it's super fucking cold outside, unfortunately.
RummageSaleBubbler
How would the side rainbows work? Given that it contradicts what I expect, I assume fake without a scientific basis.
PocketCleric
If there is a second very bright source of light from a different direction that could do it. No idea about here thoigh

It’s such a surreal phenomenon!

I feel like people tripping on mushrooms 2500 years ago saw this and boom, Christianity was born.

Those are ice crystals. The same ice crystals that make the sun dogs to begin with. Notice how it stops flashing as the camera pans?

RenaissanceFaireMan
In a person? I don't think you can see a rainbow in a person...
huffnpuff72
There a certain orange turnip that thinks you might be able to. We should try it.

I saw trippy multiple rainbows in Yosemite last week. Didn’t get as nice a shot as OP. /a/mVNjucJ

Sundogs and multiple rainbows, very cool weather formations.
Bigblackdick69
Which is correct because these are only found when temps are very cold.

SO COOL! If I saw this rainbow on Facebook, the post would be full of flat earthers claiming it was reflecting off the firmament

Halos not rainbows.

CALAMOSCOPYJANE
Oooooo thank you!!! So those were Perry arcs, super interesting!
AbelardSnazz
Thank you - I was confused how you could have 2 rainbows from one light source and why they were in the wrong direction

Infralateral arc, I think?

Yep - I believe you're right. Another great reference pic. This is cool stuff.
