"William Russell was fortunate and fast enough to capture footage of Sakajurajima's eruption, but his hand wasn't steady and his lens wasn't wide. Thanks to modern video-editing software, though, and his own extreme patience, Russell could stabilize his shot and superimpose it on a panoramic view of the volcano."

this volcano is one of the most active in the world. he can try again tomorrow. when i was there, we watched it go off 7x in one day.
TheCeilingIsLava
at least he filmed horizontally
sirhcdraw143350
What stabilizer program are you using? Badass!
BakaWakka
I love this technique! Totally going to use it later on.
stripsofbacon
You're doing god's work
Cranbananarama
That's actually pretty cool. I wouldn't mind seeing more things like this.
YodelingEinstein
Stabilised by who? Michael J Fox?
digitalist1
They should make an app where u can see events of the past in real time.
Janusha
Wouldnt it be freaky if youre at a mountain but only when you see it through your phone, it looks like that.
Onlyrepostsmakethefrontpage
Wheres the end
TheGhostofElizabethShue
The ONE time it would have been useful to film vertically...
wrxagon
The only reason you are asking for vertical in this case is b/c of the stabilization overlap on a "horizontal" shot. Never shoot vertically.
TheGhostofElizabethShue
More like it'd get more of the smoke cloud in frame at once. I'd still like it stabilised over the still image, that shit is cool.
Lureman
If you hadn't done that I would find the eruption video unwatchable - well done.
darwinhacker
Damn Augmented Reality has come far!
Valide1
I feel like I am using the lens of truth to see what horrors await behind the veil
MrLunas
Crazy how nature do that.
WhatTheDormouseSaid
Fascinating
IMayOrMayNotHaveTroubleFindingAndOrChoosingAUsername
This is one of absolutely neatest video edits I've ever seen. Also, to original recording person; yay for horisontal, but _zoom out_ FFS!
pockpock
Can someone elaborate how this was done?
Randomice
Dude, your mountain is malfunctioning.
PyllyNalleMissionaries
The function smoke is coming out, it is what makes it work
PapaNurgleLovesYou
Have you tried turning it on and off again?
RedVsBlue
God damn you Early Access!!!
Mmbear
No its just a glitch in the simulation the lizard overlords will fix that in their next patch.
YaySpaceAndStuff
It's not a glitch, it's a feature.
Mhgod
It's like Bethesda made that mountain.
DeakVanNyke
overheating again? have you tried turning it off and on?
fer0s
Try rebooting it!
youareawonderfulperson
Actually, I'd call that functioning. That's a hell of a function!
ZiomalZParafii
I will repeat few comments for sure but damn! Amazing idea with context stabilization. Awesome work!
topshelfassistant
Was the guy who took the original drunk?
fraxinusoleaceae
I'm gonna go with "shitting themselves scared while running away".
HerrBisch
No he was standing next to an erupting volcano...
ThaEnder
Next to, 20 miles away. Same thing.
Felfurion
Alternate reality window. This is great.
DontFilmVerticallyAsshole
this time even I would have allowed vertical filming
SjorsM
No! That's how the terrorists (or in this case nature) win!

Anonawesome
Vertical would be the only way to capture mountain and ash plume, assuming camera isn't zoomed in. Vertical would be okay here.
Phischstaebchen
I need a tutorial how to do this in After Effects... I have seen this used to "draw" the entire image by shaky footage
Firebirdflame
I was thinking how to do this in After Effects. Under warp stabilizer, you can move the entire video like above, then align the 2 videos up!
ThePerfectTemperatureForHeresy
This is how stabilization should be done. It provides a good sense of scale and location
Aksuuuh
Superb
TheDudeOrHisDudeness
This one is done exceptionally well.
abcEasyAs123
I suppose you need another shot from pretty much the same vantage point.
Reviire
Well, that's not hard to get if you can contact someone in the area.
YouThinkThatsBad
I've never seen anything like this before. Now there's countless videos I've seen in the past that I wish were done this way.
jrellis462
Is there a more neutral comment than one with almost 1000 Upvote and no Downvotes
whyexactly
Wouldn't it only work for long distance videos?
HeyGeorgie
This is the coolest kind of stabilization
MetaSomma
But have you seen the eyebrow thing?
LivesInThe90s
...no. Whaat eyebrow thing do you speak of?
ThePirate1210
I suppose Emilia Clarke eyebrow stabilization gif
