It was probably the "weird as fuck" judgement. Imgur kinda runs on theme days, calling the vast numbers of people who enjoy them "weird as fuck" is seen as impolite, so no - not polite. We have a mechanism for expressing displeasure - the downvote. You found that out firsthand. Its also worth mentioning - nothing in "red head Monday" says "women". By all means, post men or cats or decline to participate entirely. Or post critical comments, if you want downvotes, just don't be surprised.

I have found that it helps to mute user along with blocking tags if there is content that you really don't want to see. Though the mute user feature seems to be a bit unreliable it does help.
