I actually read the article aaaaand, that's NOT at all what the one researcher said. they think it's a fad amongst some orcas (running into boats), BUT they don't think it's malicious, they just think it's a playful thing. Like when they wore the dead carcasses as hats for a while.

Billionaires will just have anti orca equipment installed on their mega-yachts. It doesn't even have to be lethal (which would be bad PR), a very loud acoustic weapon that's a high powered sonar would drive away any Orca like a incredibly loud siren that makes your ears bleed would work on a human. And no one would even notice it running.

A sailboat had to call the Spanish coastguard after the rudder got broken off and started leaking. They're well-armed and can even call in the navy. Don't think the orcas will fare well against that.

My favorite possible explanation is that this might be fad behavior, which has been observed in orcas before. One group wore dead fish on their noses for a while for no apparent reason then randomly stopped. Even if you were hellbent on having one captive... would it really be so hard to block off an inlet and build your park around it? It would still be depressingly small. But putting a human in a room the size of a basketball court would at least give them room to walk around. There's no reason to keep them in something so absurdly tiny, other than sadistic levels of greed.

Iâve heard the arguments you make but I donât subscribe to them. Maybe safaris where animals are relatively âfreeâ are not so bad. I once worked a party at the Lincoln park zoo. I saw how a certain big cat paced in their cage. At night the creature paced just like during the day. They all want the same thing. Out.

Certain animals wouldnât survive in the wild. Either limited or lack of habitat, or the individual itself has some limitation. So much constant pacing means itâs not being given enough enrichment, which can be a problem. But itâs one thatâs remedied by making sure the animal has things to play with and focus on.

I canât remember the book, but I remember reading when orcas would drive pods of other whales to waiting whalers. The theory was they would pick and choose scraps the whalers tossed over. Particularly the livers.
