First crew scuttled because they thought I was going to fight them. Second crew killed me on their boat while I was bringing over treasure, so I chased them down and sunk 'em. Third crew just flat out fled when I approached, got stuck on an island, and after what seemed like a moment of understanding, shot me without taking the free freaking loot. So I stole their boat and blew the kegs they had belowdeck.
Neeeew rule. No comms? No treasure. Muh GAWD.
Krakencrotch
Multiplayer is utter cancer.
TheFastpaws
It is hard to be a nice person in this world.
Eddafred
It's not called Sea of Friendship for a reason.
hotaru251
I vote to ammend the neeeew rule.....if they retaliate you use comms to quote your fanfic as the last words they hear
rabensaga
Could've been me. not palying Sea of Thieves but every game that has a voice channel it's instantly muted and my mic cut. If i'm in voice chat it wont be ingame.
ElbowDeepInAHorse
Totally get that for a game like Battlefield or COD with their absolutely radioactive lobbies. Sea of Thieves has a big social dynamic to it though that goes past yelling slurs though, and the interactions are so fun sometimes @.@
tzahtman
The real deck of treasure are the friends we made along the way that didn't kill us.

And this is why I only play co-operative games where there is no PvP. Much less hassle.
And if you're in it for the whole pirate theme, Windrose is pretty nice in that regard.
Outside of that I can recommend Valheim, Enshrouded and Palworld for that Open-World survival-craft
LockedAndKnotted
It's the Rust mentality.
ElbowDeepInAHorse
Do certain console players not have the ability to use text chat or voice? I swear Xbox crews are almost always muted.
GoneThenBackAgain
Xbox needs to plug in a headset to use voice, at least back on One (where my knowledge of Xbox ends), Playstation 5 has a microphone/speaker in the controller, so they can do it without any extra equipment needed/plugged in.
snoozername
Can I play with you? I don't know anyone who has sea of thieves and I want to learn so I can show my son cuz he loves it and always has a hard time playing with anyone
karebare2015
Where the hell is Lt. Saavik to quote general order 12 when you need her.

My friend and I do need a new game to play after Raft...
Holinyx05
lol this is why I dislike pvp games. everyone is so focused on fighting, no one is trying to make friends

MerriMod
Worse still are the mixed PvP/E games, where the PvPers will go out of their way to harass the PvErs who want nothing to do with their side of things. There's a few MMOs I've had to drop over the years because devs thought it was a good idea to put PvP zones in the middle of PvE maps and force players to interact with it, which made progress impossible at times.

EatinButtsAndBustinNuts
This is mostly why I stopped playing Arc Raiders. The whole thing started out cool, people helping others in almost all of the lobbies I got into. Then things reset and it's almost like I got forced into more hostile lobbies. Since then I haven't touched it, but man do I miss the PVE element of it, and helping others out.
baldbear
Plunder. Burn. Kill. You play different?
ElbowDeepInAHorse
I focus more on sneaking aboard ships undetected, burning bananas on their stove, moving their treasure around, and drawing wieners on their map
baldbear
Heheheheh

You'd probably freak me out as I mainly fish. I'm the dude that rolls a J up in the crows nest then fishes off the boat watching the place when we get where we're going.
ElbowDeepInAHorse
Oooh yeah, crow's nest folk are fun to swim up to :3

Your SoT name better be ElbowDeepInAPirate
ElbowDeepInAHorse
xD Naaaaw it's Kegelodon. Stupid character limit!
Drakengarde
I mean, It's called Sea of THIEVES. NOT "Sea of Friends."
That being said though, I did see an earlier comment on them ignoring crouch-spamming so shame on them. I've never played -- and I've been meaning to though to team up with a buddy, or perhaps just some randoms for silly times and goofy messing about anyway.
l8rrose
Yeah, this was one of the reasons I stopped playing Fallout 76 when it first came out.
I was stupid geared because my friend group kept spamming the server-wide boss.
Used to run around the entry area for harvestables but was always willing to help other new people. One guy kept following me around to try and kill me.
NarratesTheDarkerStory
this sounds like The Odyssey. "It's Ellie! Back to the boats! kill her!"
FluidExchangeProgram
Gaming communities will always choose violence.
ElbowDeepInAHorse
Well it's three ships that had to be sunk because they did xX

YARRR!

Not necessarily - it often comes down to the design of the game. Games like Sea of Thieves, Rust, Grand Theft Auto Online, they're actually designed to encourage open PVP. Others, like Guild Wars 2 (at least, in PVE), instead encourage cooperation, with things like everyone getting rewarded with loot and kills when grouped, instead of having it split up, meaning community attitudes are completely different.
Idsertian
The vast, and I mean VAST, majority of people playing games with a social element don't understand any interaction beyond "omgaplayerahhhhshootshootkill" and "hurr hurr, I'mma pretend to be friendly, and very obviously manoeuvre around you, so I can I can then very obviously take out a weapon, and then very slowly and carefully aim for your head because I can't actually aim for shit and can't hit anything that moves at all, just so I can shoot you and then feel like I accomplished something."
Idsertian
I had to truncate that, but in other words: Most players are dumb. See: Modern DayZ.
3Davideo
Well yeah, in Sea of Thieves you're way more likely to randomly encounter someone who is going to kill you and take your stuff than just give you stuff for free, so the paranoia is justified. There isn't any way to easily signal "I'm not going to attack you", especially not without also being exploitable by someone who actually does want to attack you, and there's no penalty for attacking people who haven't attacked others first.
StevenFarmer
Wow, that sounds miserable, I'm sure not going to play that.
MoogleMcGee
It's why my friends and I stopped playing it
RavenousMaw
My friends and I stopped because of Rate's bullshit, including protecting a groomer on their Discord server, that was the last straw
IAmAnjelen
I've been on the fence about Sea of Thieves for the longest time, but every time I read things like this that fence gets a bit narrower...
phovos
There's been a big drop off in player counts and player quality, meaning silly things like "just giving people random loot" just doesn't work any more. If it was 2-3 years ago, I'd say "go for it" but most people just run or attack as soon as they see another player ship now.
IAmAnjelen
Which wouldn't be a dealbreaker since I hear one can play (mostly) singleplayer now... But then I also heard that means you're limited in content, and I'm not sure I want to cross the single/multiplayer barrier in a game like Sea of Thieves if it annoyed me in Elite: Dangerous as much as it did :P
BenderRodriguz1010
You uh, want a crewmate? I can do terrible mischief. Or not. Or maybe a little.
ElbowDeepInAHorse
xD hey if you catch me playing on Discord feel free. I don't use a mic but I rock a sound board like an idiot, and chat ij text
BenderRodriguz1010
That is always fun lol. I'll check on it sometimes. I did a bunch of the older DLC stuff I think. Had a friend who played and we would go out just us to do missions. It never failed that we would be attacked if spotted by people. Every time lol
L0rdinquisit0r
this is why i dont play with other people.
Too much ganking and other crap over the years
ElbowDeepInAHorse
I like playing solo and streaming on Discord for kicks. Sea of thieves is one of those games where you don't have to be particularly skilled to have fun. I don't engage in much ship to ship combat because I'm not very good at it. I prefer harmless shenanigans, and I can get away with a lot now!
dtallen243
Big boom?
ElbowDeepInAHorse
Biiiig boom

I played Sea of Thieves 5 years ago, for like 30 minutes. I was trying to explore the starting area, talk to all the NPCs, and figure out what this game was all about. Then a few random players showed up in my session and started trying to rush me onto a ship or something. I didn't want to play multiplayer, but the game forced me into it. The players seemed annoyed I didn't already know what to do. So I just quit and haven't been back yet. I keep telling myself I'll give it another shot one day.
Treforce
I havent tried the game either yet.

ElbowDeepInAHorse
You should reinstall now that they added Safer Seas. It's the full game, but without the public lobby. You can play the game with a crew of friends, do world events and voyages, but you're the only player ship. Plus if you do end up wanting to meet other crews, your can just toggle over to High Seas with the same pirate
baloogarus
Played sea of thieves a few years ago with 1 friend for several sessions. Always flew a white flag bcuz we didn't want to fight ppl and just explore. Got sunk many times
ElbowDeepInAHorse
Oh, the white flag means nooothing. If anything that made you an attractive target! D:
ElbowDeepInSaintCelestine
Why would you have kegs below deck????
ElbowDeepInAHorse
They were gunpowder BARRELS and I have no idea why! One can nuke a galleon and they had TWO. XD
ElbowDeepInSaintCelestine
I always keep mine at the mast or, if we're about to sell them, at the very front of the ship to minimize potential damage
ElbowDeepInAHorse
I don't remember the last time I've sold a keg. I always donate them or use them as sea mines for chasing ships :3
Justy311
Did you do the customary crouch spam to show you come in peace?
Flareside
I always thought that meant they had the runs
ElbowDeepInAHorse
I did! And they still tried to kill me!
Harm
Philistines!
Justy311
How dare they! That is the agreed upon greeting when being friendly. They should have their gamer license revoked. I am sorry you suffered such an indignity. Us in the gamer community do not claim them!
MyInboxIsSadAndEmpty
If we can't rely on The Friendship Crouch then what CAN we rely on?!
TheRealFireFrenzy
Look crouch spamming is the 1 true interstellar sign of "we come in piece"... If green spacemen come we do that, they do that and we go off on space adventures
lesteros
Hostilities to someone who is crouching is against Geneva Conventions
INeedMoreGifMeMoreJustOneMore
Maybe they were Canadian.
ElbowDeepInAHorse
I reported them to my dad who works at Nintendo
