My 92 year old neighbor was scammed out of her life savings by one of these monsters who was claiming to be a "bank investigator". He told her that her account and local branch were "compromised" by scammers who were monitoring her calls and those of her son, so don't call him or listen to local branch employees. Her bank had opened new secure accounts for her, and that she was to move all her money to the new accounts. These people are the worst, yet I rarely hear of them caught.

Back when I worked for a PD, I took a statement from a woman who got scammed like this to the tune of $245,000 over two years. I admit I started at her in disbelief. We’re both women, she’s higher educated than I am, same age as me, but she fell for the lies - some were so stupid too. I don’t get it.

My spouse got catfished for a couple years before we met. And this person was eventually sending him large amounts of money for him to send to somebody else, always a “friend” or “relative”. When he finally became wise to the fact that they were just using him to what he was pretty sure was laundering money, he kept the last sim they sent and broke off contact. It was 11K. But it really messed with his self confidence and ability to trust ppl for a long time.

He was at a low point in his life he didn’t have much left to lose. The bank he was getting it deposited in did freeze his account and told him he was banned from banking there ever again shortly after. There’s a lot of details I’ve left out to keep a long story short but it’s one of the crazier catfishing stories I’ve ever heard. We’ve been together for 6 years, happily married for 3.5 of them so yea he’s doing much better now:)

Could have been worse financially. Common scam is to send money to the victim from a compromised account, then the victim willfully sends funds to a "legitimate" account. Scammer cashes out the "legit" account, fraudulent transfer to the victim from the compromised account is undone, and now the victim is out $X.

Yea he kinda lucked out with that part. I’ve always heard of victims sending money, not receiving it. Whoever it was he was talking to definitely wasn’t working alone. They had just about every detail set up to convince somebody they were real. For example, he asked her to send a pic of her holding a piece of paper saying “I love you, (His name)” somebody managed to find a photo of the girl who’s identity she was using holding a pillow, and photoshop a piece of paper with the words he asked…

I think she was using the identity of a not very well known pornstar from the UK’s photos and I think he found out about that because a friend of his was like “dude, isn’t this that girl you’re talking to?” There were definitely some tells from what he showed me but he admitted he was on a really low point in his life, he didn’t have a social life really, and his self esteem was at its lowest…

"Dumb people" are generally only that way due to bad education, and bad education is a result of poverty. Those people generally have a bad life and are highly stressed as a result, which makes critical thinking much more exhausting. Those people are in a very specific kind of desperation to get a better life, and easy to manipulate because they have neither the tools nor the energy to actually see through the manipulation. Having worked in IT and Banking both, most people would be disturbed at how many of the so called 'smart' people, business owners, wealthy entrepreneurs etc fall for Romance scams. So, was she dumb? In this yes. It doesn't mean she's dumb in everything. Was the guy I knew who lost 81k to his 'Canadian Girlfriend' dumb? In this... yes. In other things? No. He didn't have that sort of scratch laying about via inheritance, poor fuck actually earned it fair and square.
