Danielv1234
VLC and N++ are both epic. VLC is hands down the best media player out there.
WhotheFuckAretheArcticMonkeyss
VLC FTW! One of the only freeware I've been using for more than 15 years without any deception
scrotumflee
Free as in it costs nothing. Not free as in freedom
truk77
gimp at least is free as in speech. As are a few others on that list.
znom
uh...no, you're wrong on a few counts there
SatansAssWater
Audacity is an amazing tool for bass boosting :)
Doggoarchivar
i made my own beats with it back when i was 13 xD
Elite4W
OBS is popular for streaming butit's a hidden gem in the recording department imo once you get the right settings.
PigeonFace
When this comes up I always have to say: FireAlpaca is better for some people than gimp, studio one 2 free is free, for music sequencing
dragonherder
FireAlpaca really depends on use case tbh. Photo editing you want gimp, but firealphaca is better for drawing. Though if you are more
Serious about drawing, getting Opencanvas proper or even sai is a better option than firealpaca. Even for some drawing elements gimp can be
better in some regards. Though i don't know if firealpaca support wacom tablets (gimp had trouble with them in the past and haven't tried
more recently) and don't know if firealpaca falls to same issues or not being free and all.

I can vouch for f.lux. Shit's awesome.

Thank you for not including VLC. It's garbage.
How is it garbage?
Superkroot
Why is VLC garbage? Genuinely curious here.
EricLau
Its codec support is average at best. It also does not handle UHD well at all. It's gotten better, but there's still tons of needed work.
I wouldn't call it complete garbage, but it receives a lot more praise than it deserves IMO.
kjusielvi
It's ok for casual movie watching.
MatureMotherFuckersOnly
Check out virtualbox.
ivdok
Also, QEMU and KVM.
RevonsRutabaga
I prefer Krita over Gimp.
Krita is more comparable to Sai or opencanvas vs gimp though. Gimp is an image manipulator/editor much like photoshop is where the others
are better for painting and drawing.
HyrulianShield
The crime lab I interned at used GMP because they didn't have the funding for all the licensing required for Photoshop for everyone.
TimeFoDat
MS Office is something I just can't recommend going free. The real deal is so ubiquitous and has so much support ... just fucking buy it.
You can get away with Word alternatives probably but it's super annoying using Excel alternatives when you wanna do complicated stuff.
tablecat
No, it really depends on what you're doing. I'm doing absolutely fine with GDrive, but I can see why some people would need teh full package
Anything for work or school I just don't see the point of using an excel alternative unless it all but steals the formulas/interface.
InternationalPhoneticAlphabet
.doc sucks, and they hardly support .odf. ms can suck a dick.

I have always used transmission since it's the default bundled with a bunch of linux distros.
For a reason. Deluge sucks ass.

yes. Use deluge. It's open source!
StrangeUncleFromAbroad
It is, but is bad. Sluggish on both Win and Linux. qBitTorrent is really a better option + it has implemented search engine
Aw hell no. It barely even scratches 4mbps out of my 100mbps connection.
jazzy663
I think Deluge is a better torrent client though.
It's really slow-ass, both in terms of bandwith, and performance.
Hentaimannen
Open-source and blocklist support really sold me on Deluge.
Lierofox
Too bad fewer and fewer protocols are working with Pidgin these days. (Not their fault.) MSN and YIM are now both broken.
Yeah, it was a little more relevant made i made this list
those were the days when i could use it for facebook messenger ...

It's supposed to make it easier to fall asleep. The thing is, if I'm using my computer at night then I don't want to fall asleep.

Legit makes me sick when its on. Just doesnt agree with my eyes
I really wish they had it for mobile, Cuz there are only bad alternatives for phones out there :(
ieaturfood
It exists for iOS and Android, but your device has to be jailbroken/rooted for it to work.
Actually, night shift mode in the display tab on iOS 10
Nightshift mode is only for 64 bit devices. For those who have A7 devices or older, they'd have to jailbreak.
Ok thanks
silvertail
On Android: the Twilight app, yo.
Well but imo the Twilight app looks bad. The best ok looking alternative I found was "Bluelight Filter", it has a black filter, unnoticable
I'm running AOSP based ROM on my device - temperature correction is implemented as LiveDisplay. Works like a charm.
HerInfernalMajesty
Can confirm, it's a life saver
ats1995
Although Android 6.0 should have something built in, I use Twilight on my LG. I recommend it.
I have LiveDisplay since 5.0, but I'm running AOSP/Cyanogen. I thought it was a default option since 5.0?
Sound reasonable. Damn OEMs don't implement default features. WHERE IS MY DPI SETTING LG?!?!?!
PeterNormal
I only found OBS like a week ago. Fraps is dead to me, DEAD.
Corrosion
What recording settings are you using? I've got awful bitrate on mine...
with both OBS and Fraps, you have to transcode. All I am doing is recording a game window, I get 1776kbps after transcode to mp4
TheDizzyToast
OBS is really good, i use it too.
JustASlightJingleOfPocketChangePulsing
Been using irfanview since my Pentium 133MMX running win95. It has never let me down.
Wait, fuck it was a 166MHz, not 133.
Skadoodlle
It started doing weird stuff with gifs and I (reluctantly) stopped using it. I wonder if they fixed that.
Shat was it doing?
Playing some gifs super fast.
Haven't seen that, maybe it is fixed but might have been the files themselves.

teamviewer makes it so easy to share screens, that it's actually super easy to exploit to hack someone.

All the reports about "hacks" are from users dumb enough to use one password on multiple sites, or using suspicious pass managers. Fuckwads.
only if you can turn it off afterwards. remember the program is designed to run in the background wanting for a join request.
SgtLemming
There's an option to install it for unattended use in the installer, I don't believe it's the default. Also there's the standalone client.
eraser1
Not to mention, you can choose in the "installer" to just run it once and not actually install anything...
JohnSmithterms
It was also hacked recently. Open the door to hackers by installing it. A simple port scan can you. Use with virtual box to be secure.
It was not hacked recently.
Yes it was.
A port scan can't reveal a teamviewer computer behind a router as it connects outgoing to their server, it doesn't open an incoming port.
5938
Great... you stated a port number, that doesn't prove shit. I checked all the PC's I have running it, and none of them have that port open.

Problems with join.me. Seems to be a problem with unmuting when screensharing. Plus if you have a lot of meetings you need several accounts
You download the little package, choose to install or just run, then give the browser URL out
You don't need accounts to use join.me, I've actually never registered, it's a one-use and throw away program...
