I love the wholesomeness, but I am tired of these card booths/vendors with cameras. The last several card shows I've been to have felt like a totally different event compared to going 5+ years ago. Everything has turned into an attempt to make content, many of interactions with these people seem very 'for show' (that I have seen firsthand). Most of those people spend more time talking to their chat than interactions with the actual people there. TDLR: He's great, but content booths kill fun.

It's so nice to see members of card communities showing that level of compassion. With so many scalpers and people trying to squeeze every penny out of their cards, this means so much. He got a customer for life and probably instilled a new confidence in the kid that might trickle down to others at his local store, which can spread even more kindness. That's how communities are formed.

My son is 25 and he's just getting back into the card world. It's so strange. He sold off his childhood collection for like $200 and how he's into several weird card games. Except people just give him free cards because they didn't find "good ones" so he's got like 200+ cards of multiple decks at this point. I really don't get the appeal, but they certainly are friendly if um... hygienically challenged lot.

Yeah, that's about right haha. Most stores are beginning to offer hygiene products in bathrooms, so it's come a long way at least. I've given my fair share of magic cards to new players, and the enjoyment of seeing them put their first decks together and learn about the game is one of the biggest things that keeps me going.

To me, the big appeal of TCGs is the customizability factor. Since the card pool to build a deck can reach into the tens of thousands, there's so many different ways to build a deck, making it so while the core gameplay is the same, every game can feel radically different from each other, leading to a huge replayability factor. I will say if you want to experience something similar, but not dive fully into it, I'd suggest trying a more self-contained customizable game like Smash Up or Dominion.

I'll throw in my endorsement for Dominion as well. Very fun game with a system that's easy to understand, but with lots of tactical depth.
If they're into card games in general and wants a single player experience, I would call Slay the Spire and Slay the Spire 2 the best card game(s) ever. It even edges out Magic the Gathering for me.

Tons of these people have cameras trained on their booths specifically to create content and advertise, and I don't mean that in a bad way, they need everything they can get to support their work. I imagine to a small degree also evidence of theft I suppose.

But you did. You could have just enjoyed the moment. But you thinking some dad made a kid fake autism for a post to hope go viral? Know the moment and then in that moment keep your mouth zipped and or hands tied! I wouldn’t give AF if tacked or AI! Just happy to see something make me hate humans less than I already do. So in a situation as this on don’t ask remedial questions like the one you just asked. Be better and say something that uplifts the video and other people that need to see this

Because card trading can be intimidating af thanks to all the card scalpers and the high stakes "puilling" stuff. A lot of card traders (and I'm not one but I've taken my kids to the card shops and see how intense it can be with older collectors especially) film and promote interactions with kids and novice traders just to show how easy, fun, and approachable it can be for someone not in the know from experience.

i saw one of those dealers at the event today, he had a osmo setup recording his table. I'm sure they make more than enough back from youtube ads after something like this blows up to cover anything given away. Not to put shade on the nice guestures though, they are still super nice.

for sure, either way its still kind. its just as altruistic as people might believe. Same as those that post videos cleaning up super overgrown yards. Its a great effect, but they do make enough from ads/views to more than survive.

Well, it's not how it worked for about 50 years of my life, where little kindnesses were still a bright spot in a day but didn't seem nearly as rare and didn't have the sucker punch effect they do on me now. The last decade has certainly done a number on my expectations of behavior.
