I always love that the Internet took one version of the story, made up by some woman hating fuckstick and decided "that's the official one. That's the only one that matters." And just ignored any other possibility until it makes things like this

This sculpture is incredible. There is no celebration, no joy or triumph. She stands there saturated in the outcome of what she was probably forced to do. "You brought this.. I ended it.. now, do what I asked you to do originally... leave me alone.."

The hair snakes are supposed to continuously bite her face? Damn. We never see that depiction of her; the snakes are almost always portrayed as either being friendly or ambivalent to her, subservient to her, or consciously controlled by her. But always hostile and biting her? Yikes. That little factoid seems to go amiss among the romanticization of her.

There are a lot of "factoids" in that "back story" that... shall we say, vary from telling to telling. The original back story, as it is with most myths, is lost to time; the nugget of which probably floated about back in the Mycenaean Greek days and morphed over time. The whole "she was originally beautiful and got unfairly cursed" was actually a later change, though it was more popular than "she was born that way and is just another rando monster". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medusa
