Late stage capitalism dumpĀ

This makes me want to really fuck things up.

Looks like somebody failed Economics 101.

9 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 12

Last one has a lot of arguments on it. Union ran city. High volume of democrats in seats of power.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

It really bugs me (no pun intended) when people rail against the whole "robo-bees" thing.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It's kind of crazy how the people that add the least amount of value to society get the most out of it.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

I saw the episode of Black Mirror about the robotic bees, no thanks.

9 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 1

Without the consequence of death, is this even science?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The American dream didnt say anything about doing what you love, our generation has been mislead to believe we have the right to make money

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 4

money is earned for valuable services. its simple, you want more money, provide a better, more unique service.

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 4

But the American dream did say a lot about finding happiness and shit, and you have the second worst upwards social mobility in the west.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Corporatism is not capitalism. All these points are true but the first thing we need to do is get money out of politics.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

"I hate capitalism!" ::posts from iPhone::

9 years ago | Likes 104 Dislikes 36

Don't dismiss the message because of the medium, if I bought my protest sign at walmart wouldn't I be just as culpable?

9 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 3

"I'm sure the lords who owned the pitchforks being carried by the peasants saw the irony in that as well."

9 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 1

"Hey! Isn't that my pi-Hurk! Yup... that's mine."

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You don't drink for free if you own a bar. You're still the one buying the booze from the producers in the first place. Even if you're a

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 6

brewery, you still need to purchase ingredients, equipment, and invest the time.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 4

Hopefully he hired a capitalist to manager his bar or he won't have a bar for long.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

I'm self employed in the States. Although I agree with a lot of these; I will say that I risk everything I have and my family's(1)

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 4

Well being to be self employed. I have more access to cash, and more freedom. But I risk everything, I cut my own check.

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 3

Well done. Do you think a better social safety net would encourage more entrepreneurism and risk taking? And make capitalism work better?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

The risk is the motivation sometimes

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Funny this is being downvoted... Well ok it's not funny, but it is interesting.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

I'll take what we have now (if this is late stage capitalism) over late stage socialism, communism, or fascism.

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 6

Fair enough then. I'd also rather eat poop than lose my hands, but I'd rather just eat a nice sandwich, you know?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Interesting point. So you'd rather have the current system in the US with people bankrupted by healthcare costs than tax-funded healthcare?

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

The very few that don't get insurance are bankrupted. The vast majority that have it survive at much higher rates than those w/ tax funded.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 4

What you have now is early stage fascism, enabled by increased economic differences and xenophobia.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 5

Good

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

While I agree on alot of these, some of the posts seem a bit biased. But I do think that money should be more evenly distributed in the eco.

9 years ago | Likes 84 Dislikes 25

Then go out and earn more of it.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 4

I love talking political theory irl, I don't like political spam on the internet.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Communist. Socialist. And all bad words upon you for this heresy.

9 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 5

That wouldn't matter as long as the people who get a lot of money also use a lot of money. It's impossible to prevent money piling up.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 9

It's only impossible in the current political climate. Theoretically it's very possible and very desirable.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As a history buff I'll take it over anything

9 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 3

Late stage resource based economy! It's coming through the mechanization of white collar work and the inevitable collapse of Fiat currency!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Cringe dump.

9 years ago | Likes 43 Dislikes 24

It even makes the one somewhat humerous meme unbearable...

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Yeah... I physically cringed harder at this than an actual cringe dump.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 6

Anarcho-capitalism and crony capitalism isn't usually what people mean when they say capitalism.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This made me sad.

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 6

Yea, me too. Also a little concerned about my future -_-

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

What's the point of having a family if you're just setting them up to be wage slaves?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

I've thought about this. I don't think I want to bring kids into this messed up world. All they're gonna do is work till they're dead.

We are reverting back to serfdom. Corporations increasingly function like wealthy feudal land owners and employees like indentured servants.

'Excessive tax cuts for rich' Meh, not advocating that. How about a nice tax cut for the middle class. Oh, right, we support everything.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

They ran to the US, or at least they did before Obama enacted a Cuban Ban right before he left office that the left and the media ignored.

Also. Infant mortality- forced abortions if any defects are found before birth

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Instead half of U.S. would rather force the birth then refuse to help the parents care for the child that needs immense resources to survive

#22 Or, as the baby boomers are so fond of telling the millennials, "There's no such thing as a free lunch." Entitled indeed.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I get school is expensive. But if you get a degree in a low paying field that's your own damn fault.

9 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 37

I get that the problem, but you should know how expensive a degree is and how it pays. 400,000$ art degree then complain about the market?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

Yeah! Like the sciences! Idiots!

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

Look up rate of inflation for school cost vs rate of wage increase.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Yeah school overall is too expensive. But I do see too many posts about debt and no jobs. Should know the market before selecting a degree.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

My degree was booming when I started it and had massive layoffs five months before graduation. What you're suggesting is not good enough.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

The Sciences feed Society's mind and body. The Arts feed Society's Soul. The problem isn't the degree, it's that schools are too expensive.

9 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 5

And school is too expensive because of government.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

No. School is too expensive b/c greedy colleges and unis raised their tuitions to astronomical levels when money was made available >>

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

to help more people get a college education. Costs have skyrocketed beyond inflation since the 80s when that money was made available.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

And most of that additional money has gone to new administrative positions.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Which in a lot of cases don't include new Professors and in some includes FEWER. It's a racket.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

What about those of us with science degrees still earning sweet fuck all?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

That's the trick. Our best/brightest do work that pays really well but do little to help our society. Geniuses go into banking. That's bad.

9 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 4

What about our best and brightest who enter scientific fields? Are they doing little help?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

American culture overwhelmingly values success as monetary. Those who want to be "successful" work to make money. Not trying to argue, hoss.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Or engineering.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

What is the best engineering university in the country? Harvard, Yale, some Ivy League school? Or a state college? Where do the elites go?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

MIT

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Capitalism put simply, is about incentive and disincentive.

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 3

Yeah, capitalism is an emergent property of human interaction. And Socialism and Corporatism are two forms capitalism can take on. Kinda.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No matter which economic platform is used the rules of capitalism will always apply.

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 2

Except for communism? In my country it used to be better to work at a food distribution than to be an engineer.Higher chances of getting fed

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Visible in the underground "favor economy" that grew up in soviet Russia.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

No, its about greed!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 4

Greed is in human nature, not any specific economic system. Greed exists in socialism & communism w/power of state to enforce it.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Read Animal Farm by Orwell or simply just look at the power class in any socialist or communist society.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Finland, Norway, Iceland, Sweden! Only countries that have adapted democratic socialism to suit their situations. USSR & China were never!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Communism is not and never has been socialism. Except in the fevered imaginations of the robber barons. (Trump)

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I'm sorry if that's how you feel about it, and many do but no, it's not about "greed". Think about what incentive you have to buy something

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Kinda thought it was very Darwinian. Claw to the top and fuck everyone else. How rich would the trumpet be if he hadn't been born rich

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

or what turned you away from a product/ service. That's capitalism plane and simple. There is profit or loss of profit which ever direction

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

The whole argument is skewed in such a way that the govenment kinda gets to get us fighting then sneak away in the commotion. 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 4

A tax on certain things is fine. An income tax is theft under threat of force.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 11

Not just that- the work you do, your boss or employer takes a large cut of the wealth produced.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Because they put up the risk and capital. A company invests 10 million dollars and if they're wrong lose it all and you expect to walk in

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

And get a 50/50 cut?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

Lol @ the downvotes. But but, I order the office supplies. I should make just as much as the owner.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

That tax on your labor, created by the current employment system, is in and of itself theft.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

If a business was controlled by its workers instead of owned by someone, things would be far more free and equitable.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

And ineffective and out of business in quick fashion likely.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Business controlled by workers is called enterpeneurship.....

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

And guess who is funding the politicians that become The Government.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Please don't blanket name "corporations." Please don't. Say Citigroup, or wall street, but don't say "corporations."

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Why is that unfair? Citizens United allowed wealthy corporations to funnel practically unlimited funds into campaign coffers.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The insurance corporations that forced Congress and Obama to hamstring the ACA to protect their profit margins.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Or the banks that took billions in bailout money and STILL paid their CEOS (who had driven them to bankruptcy) millions of $s in bonuses

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Sure, it's not -all- corporations, but you damn well better believe it's the biggest ones. The ones pushing for mergers that deny us options

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

They also pay professional lobbyists to go into Congress and meet with our Senators and Reps and push whatever their agenda is.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Capitalism is great. Unregulated capitalism is not. It is precisely why we created things like a federal minimum wage, OSHA, and the EPA.

I'll give ya that trump is terrible, but this mess got a huge boost when Reagan took office in '80.

9 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 4

But, but Regan was the greatest president ever right?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Pure capitalism is dreadful. Pure socialism is dreadful. We need a blend, because people suck.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

EPA, OSHA, labor laws, are ALL the wrong type of regulations. Ffs.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 4

I'm curious what the excuse will be in 6 months, when none of those things exist...

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Agree, but It's become far too unregulated lately imo.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The EPA will be gone soon. Give it 4 years

9 years ago | Likes 51 Dislikes 5

And then people will get angry. We'll bring it back. Different people will get angry. We'll get rid of it again. This is fucking depressing.

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Do people not understand the socio-economic differences between capitalism and corporatism?

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 4

Capitalism (in its "late stage") has been redefined to mean corporatism. "Capitalists" who are not in favor of corporatism need a new word.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

The concept of capitalism is creating personal wealth by exploiting others labor, or selling your labor at a fraction of its true value.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 5

Yup. These problems are mostly due to bad politics, not capitalism. Regulate with taxes & use them to provide equality of opportunity.

9 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 12

Capitalism is about doing everything possible to drive profits and that mentality causes most of the problems. Regulations act as checks.

9 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 5

2/2 The "make profit at all cost" is just injected in it by greedy people. It is not inherit part of capitalism.

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 14

Ah, I see you're from that awesome place where complex socioeconomic systems are flawless, like their textbook definitions. Lucky!!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Capitalism isn't about doing every possible for profits. It is set of free markets, free ownership, and freedom to collect profit.. 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 13

Minimum wage actually hurts lower class workers. Small business's need to pay less taxes to pay workers more.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 24

That literally never happens. Small businesses have to generate revenue in order to be taxed. Taxes aren't killing your business, (1)

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 2

Or hour ability to pay employees, the way you handle your business is killing your business. Source: I'm a small business owner. (2)

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 2

This. Increases minimum wage, etc. just drives up inflation.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 6

Did you just read the first sentence or are you trying to clarify what I said to me for some other reason?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

There was a second comment. But my point is that- the things that are "great" about capitalism can exist without it, but the bad stuff

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

can't go away unless capitalism is fundamentally changed or simply done away with.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

You should probably read at least the wikipedia page of capitalism..

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

Capitalism requires suffering, requires expropriation of labor. However, stuff like luxury goods and markets can exist without it

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

minimum wage is actually a detriment to those in poverty. A company wants to hire you for $5/hr, but MW is $8/hr. you get no job and $0/hr

I've traveled the world a lot and everyone always bad mouths America until they eventually admit to me they want to live here.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 5

It's not. At the moment it is a horrific example of what lack of free, high standard education does to a country.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 4

It's true. We've allowed the Left too much control of education, culture, & government over the last 40 years & we've suffered for it.

Specifically, what has the left taught in schools that has led to present problems?

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Isn't it more of a social democracy though? It's not actually socialist anyway, I know that much

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

How about late stage communism, like China, bringing 400 million people out of poverty since 1960 and is only now slowing with capitalism?

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 8

China only started developing when it adopted capitalist economic policies in the 1980s.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Pretty sure British-ruled India was capitalist. Not a communist, just sayin.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

british ruled india was mercantilist, which is very different. The simple existence of governement monopoly is an abomination

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I'm pretty sure India's problems had as much if not more to do with their racist caste system than capitalism or socialism.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

There are two types of late-stage socialism. The one where they realise you need a mix of capitalism and socialism, or communism.

9 years ago | Likes 43 Dislikes 5

We haven't really had the first one around long enough to see how it ends up, but communism gets unsustainable with impressive speed.

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

It's because communism is a disaster-response system, that you should abandon the moment the danger is gone.

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

That makes sense, but the "late stage capitalism" idea from Hegelian idealism proposes Communism as a semi-permanent state.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It could be said that the first type has been around since at least 1946 with the introduction of the NHS in Britain- that's a similar 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Social Security is significantly older. Preaching absolutes is an old Communist idea- makes for good speech fodder, bad economics.

Time frame to how long Communism was prevalent in Russia- 71 years vs 74

apple store employees DO NOT get poverty wages. the "geniuses" get paid way too much to basically tell you to buy a new phone and do nothing

9 years ago | Likes 141 Dislikes 23

Also, wasn't the Chinese worker suicide rate equal to other population groups but the absolute numbers are larger with that many employees?

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

As a former Apple Store employee. We get paid insanely high in comparison to others. Not to mention full benefits

My sister gets $14 an hour so she can live in a 2br apt with 4 people. But yeah I guess that's not poverty. I'll stop buying her groceries.

9 years ago | Likes 44 Dislikes 19

Wish I got that kind of money working as a doctor

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

I make over 17 at a call center and bought a house and support my wife and son. Its about WHERE you are.

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 3

Exactly. Where I live, min. wage is more than enough to live on, while something like $15/hr in CA is barely enough to get by.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

If someone is getting shit wages and can barely get by, how do you propose they get the funds to uproot their life and move?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

That's my point. Some places 15/hr is plenty to be comfortable, some it is not. I personally am doing ok where I am. Others not so much. 1/?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

2/? The issue is that certain political persuasions figure "working harder, better jobs, college and moving" are the answers, but they 3/?

It's an entry-level job, bro

9 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 20

Whoosh.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 8

50 years ago people would have lost their shit if you couldn't support yourself, your wife, and at least one child on entry level pay.

They learned to save their money and they learned trades and skills. 2

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 5

I'm not talking about the trades. I'm talking about a cashier in a grocery store or a janitor in a hospital.

People didn't have mobile data plans, internet service, and they didn't spend most of their free time surfing the web or binging netflix. 1

Wife stays at home, home is a tenement, no frills and everything is made and repaired at home. Not as expensive as you'd think.

Federal minimum wage in 1967 is $10.18 in 2017 dollars. And that's federal. Almost every single state has a higher minumum wage than (1/2)

A full-time job should support yourself. If you need 3 incomes just to keep a roof over your head, something has gone wrong.

Go out and get a better paying job! Learn some sales skills. Learn to code for free on the internet. Learn a trade.

Those aren't three incomes, those are three entry level jobs. Stick to it, move up trough management, leverage skills.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 17

And where do you live in the mean time? What if you have kids? What if your skill became obsolete?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

You're absolutely right, but everyone downvotes you because their lazy and entitled.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 7

If I may weigh in, I work in Walmart's electronics department. They started me at $10.50 per hour. Definitely not a "poverty wage"

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I started at $10/hr 6 years ago. I make $13 now. Both were above the min wage at the time by a fair bit. Neither have ever been livable.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

You're right. Where I live that's below poverty.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

You couldn't rent a tent on that where I live.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Depends on where you live. Where I am (BC), I earn $10.85 and cost of living is really high, I had to move back home.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

the problem is that you're so used to wages being sub $15 an hour, that you think they get "paid way too much"

9 years ago | Likes 42 Dislikes 9

Wish I got that much money for being a doctor and working > 80 weeks.

9 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 9

One system being monumentally stupid doesn't mean that the other system isn't also stupid. We all wish people got paid reasonable wages.

The joys of residency

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Fuck people downvoting this. I did two residencies, seven years. The math worked out to less than minimum wage. These guys have it right.

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 4

It's almost as if somebody wants all new doctors to be buried in debt and have an incentive to reject their morals just a little bit.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

If you live in the US, it's. Illegal for them to do that

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Why were you in residency so long? Is that normal nowadays?
