I recently posted about my imminent death, and everyone was so kind and sweet about saying nice things to and about me, for which I will be as eternally grateful as I am.
The thing is, I was assured by the infectious disease doc the infection I had, the one that did not respond to the massive amounts of IV antibiotics, the one my overstressed and weakened immune sysyten had no chance of fighting off, would require extensive, multiple surgeries to combat.
And even all that pain and risk could only get me a few months before another infection moved in.
So I elected to go home under hospice and wait out the days. Lots of pain drugs, say goodby to my family, and slip away in "peace and comfort."
That didn't happen. It looks like my immune system didn't hear no bell and actually fought it off.
I'm not out of the woods. There is no scenario where I survive this thing, but today was not the day the strength of men failed.
On the other hand, just so I can get through the day my hospice nurse just tripled my drug load, crashing my appetite. I'm living off two kinds of morphine, lorazepam, a couple bottles of ensure a day, and the occasional weed gummy (not enough to see Marge Simpson.)
I hate feeling like you all might think my previous post was grubbing for upvotes or attention. I am very sincere how much you guys have gotten me trough the last few years. Particularly the all stars like Metapathos, Sigrid Rides, Patrick Bates, and so many others I can't bring to mind just now.
I'm still dying, I just got a little bit of a stay of execution. And I love you all.
PizzaCraig
Glad to hear it! We all needed a win this week.

Hey, keep Kicking.. as long as your heads above water keep fighting the fight.
Piscivore
One of my favorite movies ever. I've watched it like six times in the last year. Along with Paul, basically summed up every teenage fantasy I ever had. Apart from the ones about girls, of course.
ThisSiteIsAnEternity
I actually commented on your previous post almost entirely to remind me to keep checking up on you. You're in a lot of people's thoughts, for whatever that's worth. :)
ThePepperDutchess
No, no! You did nothing wrong! We are happy that you are still here with us! This is something to celebrate not punish yourself over nor think we would be angry.
Something wonderful happened and you lived to fight another day! You keep telling us everything you can and want to. Share the experience and let us be of comfort to you. Never give up! Never surrender!

When I was in the hospital largely dying from an opportunistic infection (PJP), I dreamed (hallucinated?) I was visited by the Black Rabbit of Inle. Love the reference and wish you the best, whatever that means at this point.
Piscivore
Each day I see the sun is a gift.
I don't have ego enough to hope He would visit me personally, let alone invite me into His owsla, but just to see Him pass by as I go would be an honor.
SpottedDickSandwich
You keep kicking and biting like you were the third monkey in line to Noah's ark, and brother, it's starting to rain.

Go your way at your own rate, there's nothing to justify and nothing to apologize for. I'm glad to know you're still with us. Peace in your hood.

We're not going to be mad if you stick around longer. Enjoy what time you have

I never know what to say but I feel like everybody can use a hug.

+1 for outwitting Anubis and I wish I could give another +1 for the Watership reference!

Now, now. Let's not the big guy in a weighing mood.

(1/2) I had a similar feeling when I needed to rush home (leaving a new job) because my mother had sepsis, multiple organ failure and a missive heart attack. She was intubated and in the ICU. They said 60% of her heart was dead and to get the affairs in order. Somehow, miraculously, she made it out. It was agony, and months in hospital and cardiac rehab. I was so grateful, but felt like an asshole at work for everyone accommodating me (in fact, a colleague lost his father at the same time).

(2/2) what I've learned is that emotions are complex. Feel how you feel, but try to give yourself the chance to thank your body for holding on. The bad feeling is just your perceived social faux pas, and I assure you, only an asshole would judge you for beating the odds and surviving. I'm happy for you, and hope you get to a place where you're happy too.

I'm going to try to pick up painting again.
Piscivore
How's your mom now?
Ac1dBurn72
Hi friend.
You shared your lament with us regarding your mortality. We will never find you attention-whoring, as we much all be reminded that life is short, and to spend it unequivocally ourselves.
I'm sorry that you've had a rough go of it. But I'm happy that you get some extra time.
Piscivore
You and me both.
Sherpafish
We are all dying. I'm sorry that you are still on the accelerated program. I very much hope, for you, that you have enough internal capacity to live, as you die. Fare thee well.
Piscivore
Thanks. Watching old movies is about all I can handle right now. Even playing Stardew Valley is exhausting.
GoneThenBackAgain
Hey now, despite it's cozy appearances, Stardew Valley still requires a full mouse and keyboard or both hands on a controller and decently full attention at a lot of time to play.

Here is my list of mouse-only, decently low stress/attention games. The worst ones are Dispatch (even with Quick Time Events off, dispatching can be stressful), and Cultist Simulator/Book of Hours (what am I even doing?? at all times kind of stress)
Piscivore
Lol. I had a really bad day a couple of months ago, so I jumped on RDR2 and just spent an hour or two shooting up Van Horne.
VolcanoHerder
Oof I too know I'm having a bad day when I can't even play Stardew, didn't realize it was so relatable. I hope that most of your remaining days are at least Stardew days <3

I followed you hoping for this exact scenario. I'm so glad you survived!
Piscivore
Thank you.
navyjeff
I hope your 'fraud' helps you live longer and better than expected.
drduffer
I’m glad you’re still with us, @Piscivore, so you can enjoy my favorite George Carlin quote:
“Good health just means that you’re dying more slowly.”
Since I’m 74 with pretty severe COPD that’ll probably kill me if I get a bad cold, I appreciate every additional day as a real treat.
Don’t you dare go quietly, my friend.
Piscivore
You either, my friend. Stare into that abyss until the abyss flinches.
AntaNce
Yes, make the abyss as uncomfortable as you can. Make the abyss blink. I hope you don't hurt too much & I'm glad you're here. :)
SuperCommanderAwesome
Glad you're still kicking. Fight longer than you want and as long as you can cuz the Reaper has been grabbing all the wrong people lately so make 'em work for it. Fuck Cancer.
Piscivore
Dolly was a blow, but Tim deserves his rest. I want the Cheeto Bandito to suffer greatly before he goes, and I get to see it.

I'll be honest, I visualise my immune system as Easy Compary at Bastogne
b00sk0r
They both did a tremendous job!

man that would be a fire tattoo
Piscivore
Get it in my honor. J/k, it's your body.
OutspokenHBW
As I told many comfort care patients: no one is ever going to be mad at you for not dying. Make the disease work for it.
IronMagnus
Fuck man you're not a fraud, your body is a superhero.
I was just thinking about you and how you were probably gone by now and how surreal that is in some way... So I went looking through my comment history to find your post and see if it had been silent since then.
How fucking cool to see this post from only a few days ago. How fucking amazing that you're still with us and have more days to experience. How fucking rad that you're still alive?
Keep going as long as you want to man!
Piscivore
On your orders.
Sam8988378
Damn guy, first I've seen of this. You're fighting a battle. I have no advice, to experience in this from which to draw. I did have a friend with congestive heart failure who lived 30 years past her end date, until depression over her daughter's cruelty caused a passive suicide. I hope you continue to defy expectations and find something to hold onto and enjoy, every day.
Piscivore
That's so sad. I'm extremely lucky to have a very large and caring support system.
marquettegoldeneagles
Claw, claw your way out if you have to. I know you can do it. This feeling is temporary and will soon be a memory. Hugs.
onlyfourlinks
More time given is a precious thing. I'm glad you got more time from your last post.
Piscivore
Me too, my friend.
SkyBlueMuffalo
I checked your profile daily and I'm so glad to hear from you. You are no fraud! You share moments with all of us that few can grasp. I hope your days, however many are left, are filles with light.
Piscivore
If not light, more of the weed I just took, lol.
levelspelledbackwards
I look forward to many more posts about your recovery...here's to being hopeful!
Piscivore
Maybe I'll be the one to beat it and my cells can join Henrietta Lacks'.
levelspelledbackwards
I hope so. I'm rooting for you.
Piscivore
Thanks, my friend.
levelspelledbackwards
You probably hear this all the time, but you're welcome to reach out. If you want to ever talk to someone.
Piscivore
Thanks for the offer, but if my mom and/or my wife can't handle it (and sometimes my mom can't, I end up getting petted, lol), hospice has an army of counsellers.
lilithefrog
Hey! I've been thinking about you, glad you're alive, hopefully not in too much pain. I'm glad people celebrate you and that you are not alone x
Piscivore
Thanks man. My primary diet is morphine and ensure. I am so lucky. I saw so many people by themselves or with just one struggling elderly spouse. Breaks your heart.
lilithefrog
indeed. You are in our thoughts, big and small ones. I'm looking at sunflowers and sharing with you.
Piscivore
Greatly appreciate it.
gablestout
@OP 4 weeks ago, I promised you I would remember you, and would revisit your posts and comments monthly, on the first Wednesday of the month. I'm happy to hear you are still with us. Death is just a part of life, but keep fighting the good fight.
Piscivore
I'm giving it my best. Worked out a good pain med schedule.
