Unless you are dealing with molds or bioterrorism agents, bacteria don't generally go airborne. Initial plating, we always use gloves.

Because of gloves many people forget to not touch their faces, or to desinfect their hands. People tend to be more careful without them :)

Sanitising hands with hand sanitizer /cleaning spirits becomes habitual in labs like that

If you work with a burner it's very dangerous to wear gloves - you don't feel the heat well and might melt your gloves to your hand :(

Theoretically the outside of the plates are clean. It’s fine as long as you don’t have any cuts and aren’t handsy with your face.
