Coworker introduced himself as “Maulk.” Spelled it like that when I asked. Later I was asked about working with Mark. “I haven’t met a mark”

May family owned a liquor store. An asian guy came into for a pack of Winstons every day. Every new hire was confused by "win-tons"

I work with a few Filapino nurses. I would have got it. You learn to adjust for the accent over time but there is a learning curve.

A new Zealander coworker introduced himself as Wez. But because of his accent I thought it was Wizz. I thought it was a nickname or smthing.

My best friend’s brother is named Reid and I used to joke that it was Reed, because his parents couldn’t decide on Reefer or Weed.

I kept addressing an old black man, customer of mine, Mr. Weems. It was Mr. Williams. I felt like a huge ass.

Forgive me for asking, but was him being black relevant to the statement?
Yes. It was intended for the reader to trigger an association based visual and help quickly paint a picture, to accompany my story. Problem?
zachattach117
Don't. I work at a pharmacy in the south, happens a lot. If you say 'Williams' in a quick, southern accent it sounds like 'Weems'

As someone who grew up with a bad R speech impediment, I feel this. I had no idea how bad it was till I heard my own voice in like 2nd grade
Sneemaster
Had the same until I was 8 years old. Speech therapy fixed it but I didn't notice how bad it was until then.
I was in speech therapy from preschool to 8th grade. In retrospect I don't think I can feel my tongue make the movement thanks to 1/?
getting hit by a car and slamming my face into asphalt right before I turned 2. Had a "dead" tooth removed when I was around 4 from nerve2/?
Damage around my mouth (from my understanding). Also had a "mild" (as my mother put it) concussion. No one really thought to put the two 2/?
