I live on Vancouver Island, and crab goes for like $25 a piece. Traps are $20. Decided I'd rather save $5 and get them myself. This was the result.

I enjoy how imgur seems to be becoming a seafood forum.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I don't. It just makes my Midwestern ass jealous.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wot in crustacean!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not being a coniseir that is awesome!

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We got blue crabs here. What are those? Look delicious.

9 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 1

Look like stone crab? Haven't ever eaten them, we target dungee.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

Looks nothing like Stone Crab.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Summer is blueclaw time. My favorite time.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Blue crab here goes for $9 each. Crazy.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's at a store. What's the dock price then?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Don't know. We're still in the middle of crawfish season so I haven't checked.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Retail prices of blueclaws are insane. Get some chicken, string, and a net and get your own!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Haven't done that since I was a kid.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Red Rock.

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

So much better than dungeoness.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Uh. No way. We throw our rocks back. Dungeoness or go home. Way more meat, way more flavor than rocks.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Then you haven't had good rocks. To me, dungeoness are too bland.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm here from a year in the future to tell you you are wrong Dungeness are better I've tried both many times

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

WHY is everyone posting seafood tonight, imgur? I LIVE IN A LANDLOCKED STATE FFS YOU'RE ALL MAKING ME CRAZY.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Rock crabs? Not a lot of meat on them. Make sure you hit Dungie season.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I was looking for this comment. It looks like only on dugeness in the top left.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Black tipped claws. Rock crab. Dungeness have white tipped claws.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I am so envious over here.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

It's pretty cheap and easy to go crabbing. You just need to be near the ocean.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Crap I'm already bad at step 1

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

You can rent crab rings, so there really is no excuse. Go crabbing.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Awesome score! Any imgurians from Victoria?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nice to see an islander I live on the big rock too

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

SAME.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Get em while you still can, soon as it heats up out here we gonna have red tide coming in

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Where did you go? My dad tried a couple of places around Victoria and got NOTHING.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sidney pier and James Island ferry dock.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

For anyone questioning their legal size, I posted in my subs with a caliper to show sizes.

Sick I just moved to Montreal from there used to live in qualicum beach

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I grew up in Qualicum. Class of '05.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I looked, seems legal size, around 3 inches.

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm still stuck on $25 per crab!?

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Not true. Those are red rock crab. Barely table fare. Even Dungeness dont cost $25

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

They sure do in the city.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We crab out off the San juans, best darn crab ever! They look legal to me!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm not sure if it's legal, but last time I was there I caught them by hand after dark. So. Much. Crab.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

BANANAS MOFO, DO YOU KNOW THEM

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

There's a limit catch of 6 per day for Red Rock Crab.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Havent tried crabbing where i live on the island only ever in nanaimo

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Then you had the best. Get them off the docks? MMMMmmm I have the day off should go get some.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

There's an age of consent for being eaten?

9 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 2

Usually about 5 inches in my experience

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Depends on where you are. There are usually restrictions if the sea creature is too small as they are reproducing if you kill all the babies

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

For crabs, yes.

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

For girls being eaten out too :|

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 3

Do they ever consent though?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It takes a long time to learn their language, but yes, they do.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But they could be your friends!!!!!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I trapped crabs in Delta B.C. Right at the Delta Port. Was awesome. Keep it up.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Did you only keep the red rocks, or did you just not catch any dungeness?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, about a million giant females :(

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Lame. I miss crabbing. It got crappy right after Fukushima. I assume there's correlation.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Where at? We've been having good years consistently... we mostly drop in Puget Sound, north of Shilshole, south of Edmonds.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I live in Washington and I love to crab in the sound!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You don't need a permit or something to catch them?

9 years ago | Likes 226 Dislikes 4

I always carry an anual tidal license. Covers all bivalves and crustaceans.

9 years ago | Likes 336 Dislikes 1

Those don't look like they meet size requirement. ..either way good haul

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 10

Ffs as I've said multiple times now, 110mm for rock crab. Look at how small that is on a ruler. They are smaller than Dungeness.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

So... Clams/Mussels/Oysters too? You have any Kumamoto's out there? (IIRC they're from the PNW)

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

as long as they're not females right?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Right. The under bellies are the tell tale. Wide Christmas tree shape design = female. Basically a straight shape is the dudes.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Guess you just made $180 then (If you were to sell them yourself of course)

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hello, Vancouver Island local here. What kind of trap is 20$?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

A folding one. Crappy Tire, Cabellas, Island Outfitters or Capital Iron will have them.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

whots a bivalve?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Clams, mussels, oysters etc. classified by two valves(siphons)that they use to take in and expel water for filtration, oxygen and movement.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

cool

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A valve that like both boys and girls

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What's the catch limit on that?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

4 per person. I went with my roomie who bought a day permit.

I just hope you catch them far away from where Victoria dumps its raw sewage into the water.

9 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

They're bottom feeders. Not like they're living off quality goods to begin with

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Why? That's where all the best flavors come from.

9 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

Makes for big fat crabs. Like OPs moms

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

James Island ferry dock.

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

So you just get them where the ferry dumps it's sewage instead?

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

They're bottom feeders anyways!!!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ferries don't dump their sewage, and the "ferry" is a 60 foot walk on only boat.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Where's "Edward macaroni fork" rank on your list?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

-200,000

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

don't they have size requirements? some of these crabs are looking too small to be legal.

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 2

110mm. Any crabbing dock will have tools attached to measure them. The smallest was 130mm.

9 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Damn, @op , you're getting the 3rd degree about your crabs

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

OP just slaughtering the questions

9 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

Pretty basic questions for anyone who goes crabbing. Proper Size, sex, and permit = in the clear

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

what about bait?

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Turkey necks.

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Fellow Islander! What part of the island are you from?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Small world ☺

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We get rock crab and sand crab in australia that look extremely similar to them but we eat blue swimmers and mud crabs.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I cooked a live crab once. After it finally stopped hissing and screaming and trying to crawl out, I swore I would never cook crab again.

9 years ago | Likes 50 Dislikes 2

Technically that's not hissing/screaming. It's their internal fluids boiling and the steam escaping through their shell. The more you know

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Just put a lid on the pot. If it tries to crawl out the water is hardly even boiling. They should stop moving the moment they hit the water.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think the water wasn't hot enough cause I was trying to put the lid on him with his claw grasping the edge.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Stick them in the freezer for a bit first. They don't try to run away if you do that.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Honestly the best way to do it is to take a sharp knife, and cut them clean in half. They die instantly. Then cook them.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

This might sound weird, but I like to eat the stuff in the shell...

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My ancestors are smiling at me, imperial. Can you say the same?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

[screaming naked man in lizard mask bursts through door and attempts to bite chef]

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

He looks so sad :(

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Well, he's about to get his head cut off. I'd be pretty sad at that point too.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Do they HAVE to be alive? Can't you just snip their head off and cook on the spot?

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

I think I did it wrong cause I was just going off how I thought I saw my parents do it when I was a kid...

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Let the crab juice boil and cook it from the inside while he dies a slow painful death. Hmm delicious! I'm hungry

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

you can put them head first in boiling water, killing them almost instantly. But it makes the limbs fall of easier after cooking.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Aren't crabs like 90% head?

9 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

Yeah, the head bit isn't actually where the brain is. You can rip the top half of the shell of and they are still kicking.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's somewhat unsettling actually. But if you poke the right place they'll die instantly. I know this from experience.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's more that they have no neck joint. They do have a brain though(between & slightly behind the eyes).Poke something through before cooking

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's more like 90% NOPE by Gaben

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They can be humanely killed by driving a knife or pin through the brain (which is a bit behind the eyes,as in all animals).Ppl are just lazy

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Some recommend freezing them for 2 hours to render them unconscious, but I'm pretty sure being boiled alive wakes them up.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

With mud crabs it changes the texture freezing them

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think this happens to all frozen meats and many other foods b/c ice crystals destroy the cell walls.Another reason why stabbing > freezing

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

TIL mud crabs aren't just from skyrim

That still makes me sad. Only thing I'll cook live now is mussels and veggies.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Even if so, I wouldn't want to be cooked alive so why would I do it to something else. I'd first kill it. Thankfully I won't ever have to.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

They have nervous systems. Ergo, they can feel pain. They don't experience life like humans, but the nervous system is there for a reason.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I always find it so hard to believe when people say certain animals dont feel pain. What was making it crawl out from the water? Ineed anser

9 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 1

They can perceive pain, damage, etc, it's just not in the way we do.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

9 years ago (deleted Jun 12, 2025 10:43 PM) | Likes 0 Dislikes 0

That's not true at all. Arthropods do have a pretty complex brain, the necessary nerve endings throughout their body, and opioid receptors.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

Research shows that they respond to tissue damage, but less so when anesthesized with opioids. While we don't know if they consciously...

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

experience pain, their nervous system definitely has a pain response. Eat all the animals you want, but kill them before you cook them.
