The Motherland Calls

Height: 85 meters (279 ft)
Location: Volgograd (Stalingrad), Russia
Construction: 1967
Description: This monument was built at the site of the bloodiest single battle history and is dedicated to the more than 1 million Russian soldiers killed or wounded in the city’s defense. The famous Soviet sniper Vasily Zaytsev is also buried near the statue.

African Renaissance Monument

Height: 49 m (160ft)
Location: Dakar, Senegal
Construction: 2010
Description: was built overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and was meant to celebrate Senegal’s 50th year of independence. It was also built by a North Korean firm at the cost of $27 million.

Arch of Reunification

Height: 61.5 meters (202 ft)
Location: Pyongyang, North Korea
Construction: 2001
Description: The two women depicted in the arch are dressed in traditional Korean dresses and represent the North and South, as well as the dream of unifying both nations.

Colossus of Nero

Height: 37 meters (121 ft)
Location: Rome
Construction: 64 or 68 A.D.
Destruction: 5th century A.D.
Description: Was originally build by Emperor Nero to depict himself and was located in a massive imperial villa complex within Rome. The statue was later altered to depict the sun god Sol and moved near the Colosseum by later emperors. It might have been destroyed during the sack of Rome in 410 or by later earthquakes.

Atlas

Height: 14 m (45 ft)
Location: New York, United States
Construction: 1937
Description: Located in front of the Rockefeller building this statue depicts the Greek Titan Atlas holding up the heavens. It can be seen in many shots in the show 30 Rock and was also initially thought to resemble Italian dictator Benito Mussolini.

Spring Temple Buddha

Height: 128 meters (420 ft)
Location: Henan, China
Construction: 2008
Description: This huge Buddha took the Chinese 11 years and $55 million to build but ended up being the largest statue in the world. The 1,000 tone copper cast sits above a Buddhist monastery which both derive their name’s from the nearby Tianrui hot spring.
