I have been saying this since fackbook began. Social media is cancer. Ask yourself, how does facebook make money? It is selling your data, all the intimate details of your life, it is selling *you* to the highest bidder. *You* are the product facebook sells to corporations that want to manipulate you with advertising.
What do you get out of it? Closer contact with your racist uncle you don't even like? So you can watch humanity devolve into echo chambers and arguments?
Stopped using FB in 2016 when the politics of the day gave it a frighteningly toxic vibe. I didn't like what I saw it doing to me, my friends, or my family.
I haven't missed it once in the last ten years. You won't miss twitter when you choose to leave it, either.
As bad as it was before (and it wasn't good), the fact is that it got noticeably worse when Trump got elected. Hate and lies skyrocketed in posts. Constant display of human stupidity. I was pretty much only there to keep up with what my extended family and my friends were doing, but it wasn't worth it. Quit and haven't looked back. It hasn't been tough at all. I feel no need to go there.
This was the same for me. I haven't been on since Mango Mussolini was elected the second time. My last post was to a republican friend hoping that he is right about Project 2025 being democrat propaganda and that it wouldn't be enacted. He was incorrect, obviously.
Facebook‘s refusal to do anything at all about scammers pretending to be celebrities to rip off old people is shocking. My mom has fallen for a couple and I have reported the absolute hell out of them, but they won’t take them down or do anything. The only message I got was that, “the reported page, Elon Musk investments, has not violated any terms of service.” THEY ARE LITERALLY STEALING FROM THE ELDERLY. BLATANTLY.
I think it gave me a substantial advantage in terms of mental health to cope with the last 6 years that i quit and retired my facebook account in 2012 just right before they got their grubby little hands on whatsapp.
I got banned for "Cyber security" (I was moderating a large group and was spamming our support Discord). Due to them having close to no workers who speak Norwegian, THEY didn't have time to handle my appeal within THEIR 180 day limit, so it got automatically permabanned becayse THEY didn't have resources to read the appeal. I really don't miss it, now I have an excuse to not have my family annoy the shit out of me online, hehe.
The day Trump took the oath of office the first time, I deleted FB as he was on stage. The day he took the oath the second time, I deleted Instagram. Never been happier.
I quit Facebook 2 year ago after they wanted a video of my head turning side to side. Facebook is lockstep with palantir and has been feeding your pictures into its surveillance systems so when you speak out against the administration, ai can find you instantly through flock cameras and satellites
I got hacked there ONCE and it was probably a decade ago. This year they tried forcing me into a 2 factor authorization. Let me think if I want to give them an additional email or phone number. Nope. DELETED and couldn't be happier about the decision.
I only logged into it from a separate browser from what I used for everything else and in private mode. Ran adblock plus (2016ish?) with all the "anti-social" lists on all browsers. They flagged my account as suspicious activity over and over till I just deleted it.
Fairly certain humanity is the source of all stupidity. Without the users Facebook would just be an empty website. It's the users that are the problem.
Sure except for the part where those platforms(facebook, insta, x, etc) deliberately prop up right wing propaganda that stirs up hatred and stupidity. So no, its not really just the users, its the platforms themselves and how they're designed to maintain engagement.
And where exactly does the propaganda come from? Pretty sure it comes from people. Without people to create the propaganda there is nothing to prop up.
The system is just a tool and tools are useless without people to use them. How many leaves is a rack going to collect without someone to wield it? People are the root issue in any problem.
Main disturbing thing about Facebook is the whole lack of anonymity. At least on 4chan, you assumed that people were only saying that shit because no one would no what they looked like. But on Facebook and Instagram, they don't care. They'll say the most unhinged shit imaginable with their profile pic front and center
On Facebook there’s plenty of anonymity. The insidiousness of most social media companies is that the algorithm pushes engagement over any other goal, and they’ve figured out that conflict accomplishes everything they want.
Pretty sure the lack anonymity led to our current political situation. Got them used to saying what they'd only say in darkness right out in the spotlight and here we are.
Yes, but at least the coal seam fire was finally revealed in the light of day. This shit has always been with us; the problem is that publicly no one stomped these insects back under the rocks where they came from and open hatred became normalized. So few people stand up to the bullshit in public anymore. Hell, I've lost jobs for less, so to me the majority of the whiners here just look like fucking cowards. I know you all won't die to take America back until it's too late.
If imgur is considered social media, this is it for me. I couldn't give a rat fart about fake friends on facebook or anywhere else. I've never even bothered with so called social media (facebook, X, insta, snap chat) none of that shit is very social.
The only ones I’m still on are: Bluesky (less evil, like twitter pre-2022) INaturalist (wildlife photography) And Letterboxd (keeping track of movie reviews and lists)
Community driven social media still exist. IRC and Usenet are still around. Cyberpunk is "fuck the corporations, I'm building my own, with blackjack and hookers, for the community"
I'm convinced that Anonymous is a Russian psyop. They conveniently only show up in election years, or at times of civil unrest that directly affect the left.
Marsupialmessiah
Considering the start of fb was to give scores to female students attending Harvard are you surprised?

ya, I stopped a long time ago..this is my only social media now but it's got its own problems..
Tarmaccian
Oh, not _all_ stupidity. I assure you there is plenty that originates elsewhere.

hellfirerains
Facebook, tiktok, instagram. All of them are full of racism, trumpers, religion, misogyny, misandry, and drama. And it has started leaking into imgur
Raventhief
There are far older stupidities that birthed the stupidity that is FB.
Mountons
It's been utter shit for a decade now. Truly can't figure out why anyone still stays on it... Except for marketplace.
r00tk1d
Facebook gives stupid people a platform. There's a difference.
RealRedbeard
On the other hand, it's close to unusable today, so it's just a matter of time.
jethroismaxbaer5772
I dropped Facebook years ago because it was destroying my mental health and my self-esteem. I did not need that.
ExistentialDreadlocks
So is Imgur, you're not special.

Quit that cesspool back in 2016 when the Trumptards showed up

I quit Meta apps during the TikTok nonsense. Tiktok was actually very informative and fun at the time. Yes, I have since quit that too.
bwittekoekover9000
wait'll you learn about tik tok...
lightfoot2
Always has been.
itsthevoiceman
deleted my account in summer 2020 (guess why)
best social media decision ever

Never been on Facebook, or Xhitter or any of that crap. Not enough hours in my day to waste them like that. Come here instead...:)

I think it’ll die off with the boomers though. Maybe GenX.

Humanity or Facebook?

Maybe we’ll get lucky and both will happen?

Also would accept "first one, then the other"

The argument that its users fault falls apart when the system those users are using is manipulative and most of those users dont really know about it.

Quit Facebook, quit feeding the beast. JFC how hard is that.

I've never used it. But that doesn't mean it isn't poisoning millions. Me not using it does nothing to solve that problem.
RiotFixxer
Quit social network, return to the pub.
flow3232
No one even posts or updates Facebook anymore. It's just another reel churn factory like instsgram
RevTang
Thank you. I noticed this and quit in 2008 lol

Like you don't have to go all Ted K and live in a cabin in the woods, but FFS quit feeding the monsters.

I mean, it was always a hive of scum and villainy. CP, Gore and Snuff were common sights for at least a few years like 15+ years ago. 1/

Admittedly I was never a part of that community, but it was there every time I dared drop into that cesspool out of curiosity. 2/

It was like a cultural magnet many on the internet felt they had to see on rare occasions. Hard to explain. /3
