The Handmade Tool Chest Of Henry O. Studley (1838-1925), Organ And Piano Maker
In a space of just 25 x 100 cm, Henry O. Studley managed to artfully arrange more than 250 of his tools into a dovetailed mahogany cabinet. Since it was first unveiled in 1988 on the cover of »Fine Woodworking«, this cabinet has captivated tens of thousands of woodworkers. The cabinet and Studley's equally amazing workbench, however, were sold to a private collector and have not been seen by the public for well over a decade.

The planers tell me that he works with wood. Lots of the other tools have tons of applications, but you'd only use those planers on wood. Lots of precision tools, so he's not just a regular carpenter. Small hammers for small nails or pins. Could be furniture. Could be shoes. Maybe stair rails. Or pianos/other instruments. Obviously highly skilled and detailed work.

I see masonry tools, and carpentry tools in there. Loads of calipers, planes, some finishing hammers, back saws, chisels, t square, looks like awls what is throwing me off is the mallet. it simply doesn't look right. Are those peg adjusters for tuning a piano?
Whoever made this case was a busy man.

Planes for shaving wood, backsaws for precise cuts like dovetails, what looks like an assortment of wood chisels, wooden mallet for driving parts together, small clamps. Measuring and marking tools: calipers, dividers, edge scribe for marking a parallel line, angle finder. Hand brace, but the only bits I can make out at this resolution look like they're for boring, not drilling; I don't see auger bits. I'd say cabinet or furniture maker, but the freemason symbol kind of throws me.

A craftsman in ancient times had the great advantage of having strict order. Tools were terribly expensive, and were passed down from father to son. Having a system where you could see if something was missing at the moment was very important. It was also very efficient to work when you knew where each tool was at any time.

Wire and sheet metal gauges are odd, too. And anything could be in those little drawers, and too many things can't be made out at this resolution. But this looks like the sort of case the craftsman made himself, the way my father and grandfathers made their own toolboxes and racks.
