Thought provoking animated movies worth watching!

American Pop

"American Pop" is the animated story of a very talented and troubled family starting with 19th century Russia and moving through several generations of musicians. The film covers American popular music from the pre-jazz age through rhythm and blues, 1950s rock 'n' roll, drug-laden psychedelia, and punk rock, finally ending with the onset of New Wave in the early 1980s.

One of my absolute favorite movies.

The Animatrix

One of my favorite short pieces of animation is the 2nd Renaissance, but there's plenty of variety in this film.

The Animatrix is a collection of several animated short films, detailing the backstory of the "Matrix" universe, and the original war between man and machines which led to the creation of the Matrix.

And Man said, 'Let there be light'. And He was blessed by light, heat, magnetism, gravity, and all the energies of the universe.

Heavy Metal

A sweeping story of the battle of good against evil is told through an anthology of short animated films about a glowing green orb (the Loc-Nar) that is the personification of ultimate evil in the universe.

What can I say? This was groundbreaking at the time. Animation and music hand in hand. One of the greatest soundtracks out there.

Memorable lines: He's nothing but a low-down, double-dealing, backstabbing, larcenous perverted worm! Hanging's too good for him. Burning's too good for him! He should be torn into little bitsy pieces and buried alive

The Hobbit

Long before Peter Jackson fiasco of a trilogy there was this.
You know the story.

Memorable lines: May the hair on his toes never fall off!

The Last Unicorn

From a riddle-speaking butterfly, a unicorn learns that she is supposedly the last of her kind, all the others having been herded away by the Red Bull. The unicorn sets out to discover the truth behind the butterfly's words. She is eventually joined on her quest by Schmendrick, a second-rate magician, and Molly Grue, a now middle-aged woman who dreamed all her life of seeing a unicorn. Their journey leads them far from home, all the way to the castle of King Haggard.

Memorable lines: Mommy Fortuna: The harpy's as real as you are, and just as immortal. And she was just as easy to catch, if you want to know.
Unicorn: Do not boast, old woman. Your death sits in that cage, and she hears you.

Watership down.

These next two are NOT for the kiddies .

Watership down delves into the surprisingly violent world of a warren of rabbits as they seek to establish a new colony free of tyranny and human intervention.

Memorable lines : Black Rabbit: I've come to ask if you would like to join my Owsla. We shall be glad to have you, and I know you'd like it. You've been feeling tired, haven't you? If you're ready, we might go along now.
You needn't worry about them. They'll be alright, and thousands like them. If you'll come along, I'll show you what I mean.

The Plague Dogs

Another punch in the chest movie from the Richard Adam's novel. The film is about a pair of dogs (Snitter and Rowf) who escape from a research laboratory and try to survive in the wild with the help of a cunning fox (The Tod). The lab director tries to keep the escape quiet, but as an increasing number of sheep are found killed, word leaks out, together with rumors that the dogs might be plague carriers.

Yes, this one is fairly well known but a masterpiece, and it deserves to be only any great films list.

This is the tale of two brothers named Moses and Ramses, one born of royal blood, and one an orphan with a secret past. Growing up the best of friends, they share a strong bond of free-spirited youth and good-natured rivalry. But the truth will ultimately set them at odds, as one becomes the ruler of the most powerful empire on earth, and the other the chosen leader of his people! Their final confrontation will forever change their lives and the world.
This film has the whole deal, brilliant acting, beautiful music, and gorgeous animation. Whatever you believe, this a a film worth seeing again!

When the Wind Blows

Another heart breaker of a film.

With the help of government-issued pamphlets, an elderly British couple build a shelter and prepare for an impending nuclear attack, unaware that times and the nature of war have changed from their romantic memories of World War II.

Memorable lines: There's no need to forget your manners just because there's a war on.

Waking Life

Waking Life follows the dreams of one man and his attempt to find and discern the absolute difference between waking life and the dreamworld. While trying to figure out a way to wake up, he runs into many people on his way; some of which offer one sentence asides on life, others delving deeply into existential questions and life's mysteries.

The worst mistake that you can make is to think you're alive when really you're asleep in life's waiting room.

This is the only one I haven't seen myself, but it's next on the queue. Enjoy!
