If you have the guest's name you can ask to be transferred to the room, you can also ask if the person has checked in yet.

A hotel should never give out new info but can usually verify. Caller:"Please transfer me to Jane Doe's room." I can transfer w/o giving 1/2

Actually, there was once. The name motel was a short version of motor hotel. In the 20s- 30s, they pioneered pulling the car up to the door.
