I like that the term 'gringo' can be used offensively, but also, as demonstrated here, affectionately. Like how sometimes your friend is an absolute dick, and you hate them for it. But other times, they're an absolute dick, and you love them for it.

I learned Italian as a (young) adult and now at nearly 50 I'm giving Chinese a go on Duolingo. Admittedly it's more for fun than actually learning, but I like the brain gym.

I learned one as a teen and a 2nd as an adult, living in countries that spoke those languages. Both were hard, but it took literally 3x as long as an adult and I'm still far less comfortable in that language than I am in the one I learned at 16. The brain is a crazy thing

Can you? I had to take 2 years of foreign language (picked german, since its deep) in High School and 1 in College and I can tell you I can speak it somewhat but for the life of me I can't understand anything so I don't really know why it's required or how I would use it when I can barely understand English. I'm on the border of being profoundly hard of hearing though.

I must say, I found it much easier as an adult to learn foreign languages versus when I was in school. I've found I'm more receptive and look at learning very differently, which may aid retention.

A study showed that if you put a kid and an adult in the same language class, the adult usually learns faster. However, kids have more free time than adults, are less frustrated with mistakes, and are more okay with sounding childish when they speak (of course). Those things often present mental blocks for adults. Kids are fundamentally better at learning the accent though.
