We could try this on flath earthers.. naah.. it aint gonna work anyway
alphasyllabaries
Just carefully follow these steps and you'll successfully come off as a weird sociopath who's trying to manipulate people.
DredeKnig
Don't try to win arguments. Try to come to an equal agreement together. If everyone comes in planning to win then neither's going to agree.

This is more so about convincing those people with absurdly irrational beliefs: gw denialists, anti-gmoers, anti-vaxxers, etc

More than a few of these are logical fallacies. while these are good at convincing stupid people, they are blatant insults to intelligence.
ehnayehn
You have to be able to assess your audience. If you're talking to someone with a crazy idea or who is crazy, they won't listen to reason.
These tactics are to break down the emotional defenses that cause people to entrench.
NorwegianGlaswegian
Indeed. Using these against someone with critical thinking skills will likely make it even more difficult to win them over.
spiffylookingnerfherder
On the other hand, I've never found myself trying to persuade someone with robust critical thinking skills that the earth orbits the sun.
Oh dear.
I don't know the Norwegian word for 'numpty' but you get the idea.
As a Scot (though with Norwegian citizenship too), very familiar with the word, and with a few live ones.

Is winning an argument really what people strive for? Isn't it more important to listen and understand both sides and not be narrow minded?
Depends on the argument. If you're being persuaded by the scary man in the white van that he "just wants to give you candy", prob not worth.
DwarfAardvark
1) Usually. 2) Yes. This is more about persuading an opponent than crafting a rational argument.

I just started at a call center. I see that many of these apply even without face to face. People call me already upset. I have to resolve.
What topic do you do? Sales, Customer service, banking, etc. Call center work is hard, emotionally but serves as communication therapy
Retention. For a phone company. A lot of them can't find a face to yell at their frustration. Settle for a voice.
My first call ever with this company was a verbally abusive store employee for the company I support. My call is now training for others.
All the trainers heard and replayed my call. It was really bad. Not me. The store associate.
