This is just normal amateur radio. They've been doing that since the Skylab days. It's not even necessary to use that directional of an antenna if it's a high pass angle.

It’s called ham radio, and it’s not hard to do. There are instructions online that tell you all you need to build that antenna and you can even access sites that will help you study to get your ham radio license. Although I won’t lie it’s cool and fun. I’ve contacted the ISS, and space shuttles when they were in orbit as well. There’s even antennas you can build to download data from sattilites

The antenna is something you CAN build at home (and if it were me, I'd have built the antenna and bought the factory-made duplexer, he did it the other way around!), but the particular antenna he used is a commercial product that he names in his video.

The ARRL gives guidance on how to do exactly this. Clouds make it harder to aim your yagi antenna but the signal goes right through it.

I'm telling you: I very much doubt anyone can casually point a handheld antenna at a moving (and invisible) target. I had a hard enough time pointing a mounted antenna to a fixed point. The location/trajectory is known and with tracking mount it can be done. But not handheld.

Field Day 2012, Inuvik NWT Canada. A friend and I up in Inuvik NWT Canada were working using my callsign. Same Arrow II handheld antenna, different handheld radio. He made the call, I aimed using a watch & printed pass prediction while telling him when to adjust tuning for doppler. It was hard, it didn't last long, I think the satellite was SO-51 but I'm not 100% sure, and we got a contact in Washington State. With practice, I have no trouble believing one person can manage it.

Yeah. My dad did it some years ago. He was talking to a cosmonaute. I was holding the antenna. I started by theoretical heading near the horizon, then tracked by sight.

Yes. I’ve never talked to anyone on the ISS myself but I’ve sent APRS data packets through its repeater, and used a handheld radio to listen to their downlink when they were doing a community outreach event with a local school.

no but you do usually have to account for Doppler frequency shift by slightly adjusting receive frequency during the conversation

I believe you do, it is a directional antenna, but my telecommunications studies never accounted for space things, so I can’t tell I lack knowledge. You should probably know the initial position and velocity, your transmission time for the signal to reach the station, like predicting the shoot of one of the ships in space invaders…but I suspect that curves might be implicated, not sure of this.
