Hermit crabs utilize shells grown by snails. As the crabs grow, they need to find a new shell. Kiko is my very outgoing pet hermit crab, normally they would not expose themselves out in the open like this.

Me coming home from work, taking off my pants and putting on sweats.

How do you know when it's time to ply him with a new shell?

You should always keep a few different sizes of shell in their enclosure. That way they can change when ever the mood strikes them.

Do they ever decide to go down a shell?

Maybe if the shell they're in gets damaged? I don't know, animals are funny little idiots sometimes.

Will Kiko be getting colorful designer shells? Painted?

Actually shell paint can be harmful to hermit crabs :/ besides, I think the natural or polished look is better!

ooo do they get polished in a tumbler or by hand?

By hand! A tumbler couldn't get all the ridges smooth
