Thrift Shop/ Trash-Picked Paintings by Art Apocrypha

"Black Eyed Susan"

I see this print every time I go into a salvation army. Maybe I'll do a series of them, with the girl looking at a bunch of different things...

"8-Pointer"

One of the earlier pieces. The footprints took the most time in this one.

I go by the name "Art Apocrypha" because these paintings are all trash-picked or bought at thrift stores; they are the forgotten or excised parts of the art world. They are Apocryphal. So I like to give them a good home and re-vivify them with spooky monsters and such.

"Beach Body"

This one I found in the trash. I think it was from one of those "Paint Party" type places, where wine-drunk moms all go and paint the same picture together. And no offense to any wine-drunk moms out there, the simplistic style was actually a lot of fun to work with.

"Starfall"

I stared at this one for a year before I figured out what to do with it. Lots of negative space, and a huge moon in the sky gave me a lot of options.

Lots of people who do these types of paintings just put pop-culture references into landscapes, and make sure they jump right out at you. I didn't want to do that, so most of my paintings are original creatures that I try to work into the existing style and color palette of the piece.

"Strange Aeons"

This was a pretty big painting, about 4'X4', so I wanted to do something to match that scale. Again, I had lots of negative space to work with. Cthulhu was really the only option.

Ok, I said MOST were original creatures.

"Of A Feather"

Tentacles are fun to do.

Not like that.

"Coven"

Witches celebrate the winter solstice. This piece was a commission. I think it's hung up in their bathroom now...

"Drift"

The first one I ever did. The "Drifters" have become a sort of mascot of Art Apocrypha.

"Feeding Time"

Another older piece. I always like when the paintings have good foreground, middleground, and background elements. It gives me more ways to make the additions look like they're really part of the painting.

"Sunday Picnic"

Errybody loves zombies. This piece is a good example of the fact that I often paint as much OUT of the old painting as I paint in. The girl on the ground was holding a parasol, I had to paint out the torn-in-half girls legs and re-paint them somewhere else, there were more people on the road that I removed...lots of stuff.

"They Demand Meat"

They are to be obeyed.

"The White Widow"

A fun piece based on the legend of La Llarona, and just banshees in general. There really aren't any good banshee movies, huh? Someone should get on that.

"Witches Sabbath"

More witches. This piece is my love letter to Goya.
