A few weeks back, I saw this post, and I thought well, why the hell not.
So I created an Amazon Wishlist, and promoted it on Facebook. The Wishlist was all about socks, with the plan being to take the donations to a local charity - Metropolitan Ministries of Tampa, FL.
Socks.
So many socks.
But don't worry, I saw you in the comments.
So I added those items as well.
And I was like socks without shoes? Crazy talk.
All in all, 42 separate items were donated.
Many of those items were multiple things - like nine pairs of socks in a single item. They all went to Metropolitan Ministries.

I read that plain regular white socks are under lock and key in small stores because they tend to get stolen a lot - used by paint huffers.

Gotta agree with OP on asking the shelters in your area, each place has different things in surplus and different needs. But, to generalize:

Last Christmas my family passed out bags with socks, aspirin, toothbrushes & paste, granola bars, etc to the homeless. We also had pet bags.
