Sorry Sir.

I once played a match with a female referee, she insisted we call her Sir to avoid confusion, for some reason everyone could grasp it other than our coach. The funniest Rugby match of my life.
It's a hooligans game, played by gentlemen.
Edit: Oh boy rugby on the front page, it's nice to see that a fair few people enjoy the sport that is often overlooked in favour of Football.

I played for just over a decade, loved the fact that what happened on the pitch stayed there, then we bought each other a pint and laughed

I had a rugby player on my cycling team. He'd always show up to races in khakis and a polo. Rugby is definitely gentlemanly.

YES RUGBY ON THE FRONT PAGE IM KINDA RELEVANT cheers to all you hooligans

I am switching my TV viewing from gridiron football to rugby (union) football. A much better and fun-to-watch game.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

When the Sevens tournament comes to Vegas I love it. The fans from all over the world are the best part. Never seen a fight in the stands.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I find when it's not an important game and the fans are much more relaxed and drunk, it's one of the best times you can have 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've played games where we, the opposition and spectators were drunk and it is genuinely hilarious, dw, the games weren't league so 2/3

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No refs, No regulations etc etc

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A spectator ran on and tackled the ref in an international game once, both teams roughed him up before he was carted off, bleeding.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Good, respect to the match officials are one of the key points to this sport, hence why we call them Sir.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

They could be younger than you, as I said could be a woman, either way we always call them Sir if they so wish.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Played fullback for my school and U-13s for a while until cracked ribs on my left side (and a broken nose) got me benched. I miss those days

For rugby fans and non-rugby fans alike: please treat yourselves to the treasure that is Nigel Owens https://youtu.be/GTaMYh1czgM

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Pt.1 Didn't understand why there wasn't as many injuries as football despite the lack of padding...The I learned the game a bit more...

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Pt.2 Admiral amount of sportsmanship involved in this game. 10/10 would get kids started on Rugby.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

isn't it a technique thing? American Footballers sometimes hit with their head and brute force tackle versus shoulder tackle in rugby?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yep a little bit, but there are also strict rules. Nothing allowed above the head, no dumping or spearing either. Accidents will happen pt.1

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

But the rules are heavily respected as penalties follow illegal tackles. Much like in football and hockey...it's a neat sport.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I know the rugby side of things, I just wasn't sure about the americans. Thanks or the reply :)

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

FY HEN WLAD FY NHADAU etcetcetc. I am a welshman. There are two types of people here, rugby fans and disowned people

Aye, nice name, loosehead myself!

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I was pack forward (obvi) @ USA University and men's club. Best times of my life. Such amazing cameraderie.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I know a few people who've played rugby. ALL of them have come away sith some kind of long term injury

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 3

I have long term achilles damage, worth

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

>> But it's still a great sport, played by (generally) nice people.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Unless it's mental and I'm unaware I played for 10+ years and have no lasting damage.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

You're actually now a brain in a jar experiencing the world through electrical stimuli.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That’s gonna happen with any physical sport like rugby, soccer, American football, hockey etc.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

none of them have come away Jedi though?

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Hoping that this mentality makes it over here to the States... I reckon we are at about 50% now. Still a lot of American Football parents...

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hopefully! It's a growing sport, RL made it to Canada, Toronto Wolfpack doing well in our English Leagues

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

After beating each other to a pulp, my favorite part has always been drinking with the other team afterwards. Oh, and the rugby songs!

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Soccer: a gentleman’s game played by hooligans. Rugby: a hooligan’s game played by gentlemen.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Jesus can't play rugby Cuz he's got holes in his hands!

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

jesus can't play rugby 'cause he's only got twelve friends!

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I would watch rugby if I knew of a place/channel to watch it in the USA. The bits I’ve seen look quite fun

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Unfortunately can't help with a channel being from England, but there are a fair amount of matches on YouTube.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If you’ve got cable you can use watch espn. they have a fair amount of rugby there including internationals and super rugby when in season.

“...protective gear just in order to play rugby.” --Rupert Giles (2/2)

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

(regarding American Football)

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Ya know, maybe with a little less protective gear we wouldnt be so reckless and stop killing ourselves over a game.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This. Its counter intuitive, but the gear actually makes it far more dangerous.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yes OP! get a real sport the the FP

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yep.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Just looked up Aussie Rules, it's like a combo between Rugby and Gaelic. Neat!

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

H'on the GAA

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

what happened there my friend asks

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Something that isn't rugby. (It's Aussie Rules Football.)

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The rules require them to shake hands. But neither of them are happy about it.

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Rugby: the sport of hooligans played by gentlemen. Football: the sport of gentlemen played by hooligans

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 3

Not so many eye gouges or scrotum bites in footy though.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

For my fellow Americans: They're talking about the other football.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Until you see the rugby lads on the piss, then they're as hooligan as the rest

8 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 4

The drinking culture is simultaneously the best and worst thing about being on a rugby team.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Lots of people are bad on the piss. Correlation is not causation.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It’s hard to claim to be gentleman when someone’s drinking out of a boot with spit in I️t

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's like American football but for men

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I used to play rugby, the best part aside from the game is that after a game we'd sit down with the other team for a drink

8 years ago | Likes 586 Dislikes 2

Club life is best life. Boot!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In the immortal words of our scrumhalf's bottle opener keychain: "My drinking team has a rugby problem."

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Thats what we say of our team :)

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Or 12.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

“Sit down” haha - I don’t recall much sitting down from my post-match pubs...

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I’m playing in college right now and my friends don’t understand how we drink together after beating the shit out of each other for 80 mins

8 years ago | Likes 40 Dislikes 0

We used to go to the pub too, nowt beats a pint after beating 10 shades of shit out of each other

8 years ago | Likes 162 Dislikes 0

Still do!

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

"Do it on the field boys, the pub charges us for lights knocked out!"

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I used to love going out with my sparring competitors. Taekwondo instead of rugby, but we def kicked the shit out of each other!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Rugby seems like one of those games where the fight is the game and by the time the games over no one wants to keep fighting.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Hear, hear!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's cause in Rugby, they don't have KneeBros !!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Ah, and the rugby songs, they were the best: "I met a dead whore by the roadside, I knew God damn well she was dead ..."

8 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 1

For the skin on her stomach was flaming, and she hadn’t a hair on her head, her head!

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

...upon thinking it over, I realized my terrible sin....

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My eldest started playing at eleven,in his fourth year now and loves every second of it as do I as a spectator.

8 years ago | Likes 102 Dislikes 1

Started at 5yrs old, about to start training for my 36th back to back season. Never had a serious injury.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Do you worry about CTE (Chronic traumatic encephalopathy)? I wouldn't let me son play football. I thought Rugby was even rougher?

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

There is risk associated with nearly all field sports but with the correct training and coaching staff these can be kept to a minimum.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I started young, I think it helped me so much with confidence and team building etc

8 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

Pretty sure you get a massive pain tolerance playing it too. I've watched pro players shrug off the most grievous looking wounds D:

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I can attest to this. I've popped my shoulder back in four times over the years. The first time hurt like hell but the others not so much.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This.

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

I remember in college our rugby team went up against Ohio State's "B" squad, (and got the shit kicked out of them). Our RA who was on the

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

team called us and said, "Hey we're at the hospital and we're wondering if anyone wants to join the team for the next game."

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Turns out we had like six people get hurt enough that they required medical attention including two broken legs.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And the guy was brushing it off like it was nothing and what's more asking if anyone else wants to play next game.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Rugby people are crazy, man.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sure sounds like ruggers! ;)

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Which is why you can drink beer on the stands, can stand next to a supporter of the opposite team and hardly any police presence. Love it!

8 years ago | Likes 1209 Dislikes 5

you could get into a full fight and most of time only come away with a warning. Swearing/disrespect the ref was usually an instant red card

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not to mention kick the shit into your opposite man on the field, then grab a pint with him in the rugby club afterwards.

8 years ago | Likes 50 Dislikes 1

And the supporters join in as well in the drinking! Always a big party.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

That's because you and OP are the only ones there. Also we should just call it super hardcore lacrosse.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 7

If only! Twickenham stadium - Home if English rugby seats 82,000...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

If sports had this level of class in america i might actually watch them lol

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A game made by and for aristocrats.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 4

And here I sit in my council house fucking loving it

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yeah nah mate

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

History is your friend, mate.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Exactly. I watched my team get thumped, and the opposition supporter next to me said "nevermind mate, i'll buy you a pint to commiserate you"

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Because majority of the audience is still trying to figure out how the rules work.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 5

The ruck an scrum maybe, everything else is easy

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Lol!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Really? I'm not that big into sport but I've always found rugby really easy to follow.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Played for 13 years in Texas, just retired this year.. So much fun, but so taxing on your body. Love being a rugger!!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sounds like hockey :)

8 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 5

Hockey is inside a closed arena so yelling is much louder and as a result people can get very mad

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Having played both, they are very similar in attitude. What happens in the game stays out on the field (ice). There are of course exceptions

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Plus it's too cold to start any shit.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

*cough* Vancouver riots *cough*

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Tie Domi?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Of course

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Same for Cricket... In fact I'd argue that its only football where you don't get that in the UK.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Did security on several world cup matches. Amazing crowds, amazing atmosphere, one of the better jobs I had. Rugby 7s however can fuck off.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Actually. I loved watching the women’s rugby 7 at the last olympics! Made me all warm and fuzzy! ;)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Oh the sport is fine. Here in NZ the 7s tournament is an excuse for the whole city to lose it's goddamn mind.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ah ok.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Interesting, I wonder if this is because the outlet for aggression happens on the filed whereas with soccer the players have to restrain it

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

That's my take on it

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Maybe the purging isn't such a bad idea then

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yah what now?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2184339/. *The purge.Everyone has 12 hours to commit any crime they want in order to prevent crime

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sounds like the vast majority of sports

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 5

Not many sports in which physical aggression is used have gentlemanly conduct as a matter of course

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Soccer is literally the only sport I know of that has routine violence/disorder in the stands. The majority of sports don't.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think the point is more about the players. We call the ump Sir to his face in Aussie rules, and both codes of Rugby.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The comment is about the fans, unless you think players regularly leave the pitch and hang out in the stands during games

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Yet ive seen soccer hooligans riot at the drop of a hat

8 years ago | Likes 223 Dislikes 0

DID YOU JUST BREATH IN MY GENERAL DIRECTION?! *fight breaks out*

8 years ago | Likes 77 Dislikes 0

Millwall has a reputation.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Millwall are c*nts though. They get off on the fact everyone knows them to be c*nts so they play to the stereotype.

I'm from Leeds, when Leeds Utd + Millwall clash it's a guaranteed shitshow

8 years ago | Likes 54 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

From Leeds myself. My old man was a member of the service crew. I watched him beat a Man United fan with a brick just for looking at him.

8 years ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 2

Class!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Milwall fans are a caricature of what they think "Ultras" are.

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

A Millwall supporter got into a fistfight with three rabid terrorists with knives and got out alive. Their crazy is not always so bad.

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Do Millwall even play football anymore? I've never heard about the place in a non-ultra related story.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0
