Noted: if/when I start growing my own grapes, I do not want to trim them. Idk if I'm in the minority here, but I prefer smaller grapes. They're usually sweeter and the texture is better to me.
Having done hand-harvest (for a friend, next vinyard is 2km away), the size really doesn't define aroma. Small ones can taste amazing. It's all about the variety matching the local weather, and then the purpose: eating or pressing. The ones we harvested were Riesling and White Burgundy, tasting amazing, but with a very hard peel (?). Excellent for pressing, not so good for eating a lot of them.
How do you know what type they are without planting them? I have so many on my rental property but don’t do anything with them except look at their beauty as I drive down my driveway and keep pushing the reaching vines out of the way periodically… pretty clueless and just learned from watching this video about culling them (is that the right term?) to produce bigger grapes.
I know because this friend is a wine-maker and he planted them :-) I couldn't possibly know just from tasting, although I might be able to pick out a red Merlot grape, but that's about it.
I'm pretty sure that it's about the same total amount of sugars and water that go into each bunch, whether they're smaller or larger. The larger ones you've had may have been from varieties that were bred for larger grapes, which would likely just increase the total water, diluting them, while the smaller ones had less dilution.
These remind me of Korean Muscat grapes. I paid a small fortune for them at a local Asian grocery store and they were the sweetest, tastiest damn grapes I ever ate.
