My little city and my christmas - A personal story of my home

Jan 8, 2018 1:27 PM

I come from a small city in northern Sweden. Through my life, after my 19th birthday, I've done military service and studied in three different cities but this is the city where I have my heart. These are a few photos I took this christmas. I hope you don't mind me showing them.

Three generations ago, my family was rich. This was lost to us due to my grandfathers father being a kind hearted but weak man. He lost most of the fortune drinking and gambling it away before his wife got him declared not fit to handle transactions of any sort. This was one of the houses of my ancestors.

Härnösand is the name of the city. Swedes have been living here for thousands of years but the city was founded as a city during the 16th century. Despite fire, raiding enemies, and misfortune, some buildings from the 18th century still stand.

Over 200 years ago parts of the swedish army gathered in this square before marching of to fight our ancestral enemy the Russians. A civilians who saw the gathered host said the army, and fleet stationed in the harbour, made for an awe inspiring sight but gave the impression of impending doom.

Traditional Julbord (christmas dinner) at my grandmothers house. Ribs, meatballs, sausage, julskinka, salmon, pickled herring, soft bread as we make it in northern Sweden, julmust, and everything else needed.

My doge, Elvis. My grandmother loves space which is why all those spacey pics are posted on her walls.

And this is me. Sorry for the selfie, but since I was being personal I felt like you could use a face for it all.

Hey you!!

It looks lovely. Peaceful. Steeped in history. A little... empty? But that's probably from the snow and cold, right? Gives it a surreal feel

Probably the cold, we got an unexpected amount of snow in a short time :)

It looks beautiful. I like that pic of the street with all the different coloured houses!

A few streets survive in that condition, and we are lucky to have a museum that has preserved even more buildings for posterity =)
