The ring is just a symbol of ownership.

Ever had to take a cat to the vet? The ring might actually be cheaper, in the long run, but a cat brings more joy.

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Can't afford a ring, but here's an animal that will need vet treatments that will likely equal the cost of a basic ring.

Shut up, Julie.

Kitten better be named Diamond.

$1 says Julie has at least two divorces under her belt.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Over its life, that cat will cost more than most rings. And unlike a ring, the cat can be actually useful, actively demonstrate affection of its own, and won't leave a tan line on her finger.

[ Student of History 10] Rings as an engagement practice was made up about 100 years ago. Diamonds came even later as a marketing campaign by DeBeers.
However Vikings would give cats as a wedding gift, so maybe this dude's just really traditional.

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I like this. Even more so when you put aside any comparative thoughts and remember that this man knows that woman - he knows (or should) her thoughts about engagement rings, how she feels about kittens, and what sort of bribe it'll take to get her to say "yes". If your girlfriend talked positively about engagement rings and hinted at the kind of ring she likes, you aren't going to try a kitten instead. If your girlfriend has talked negatively about engagement rings while also talking about wanti

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

ng a kitten, this is the right move to make. He made it personal and special. And hopefully the kitten will be healthy and won't run away. There are plenty of ways this idea can go wrong and quickly turn into a wedding omen

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My mom chose a down payment on a house over a ring.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hey Julie, grow the fuck up you greedy, lazy, short sighted cunt.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

He's telling here that he is throwing that kitten in the pool next to them. Her reaction; 'NOOOOOOOO, you don't?!'

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If that person thinks a cat is cheaper than a ring, they've never had pets...

Fuck jewelry but not having money and getting a pet to spend more money might be not working out either. I sure spent a lot on my dog

Offering a person a creature to take care with shared love is so much deeper that offering a symbolic chain and property mark with a bloody stone on it.

1 month ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

But to both options, ya gotta be 100% sure that's what that person wants to happen

The only strange thing is that people think an engagement ring must have diamonds and costs a fortune.

1 month ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

I'm heartened to notice that many of the engagement rings in my social circle have been alternate gems. Rubies, emeralds, etc. I think the diamond mandate is finally softening.

1 month ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I proposed with a lovely sapphire ring. Sure it was still expensive, but "only" to the tune of like $400 instead of several thousands or whatever De Beers convinced people a ring should cost.

Are you kitten me? Dearest, I assure you that I am.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As someone with 3 cats, a diamond ring would be cheaper

1 month ago | Likes 57 Dislikes 4

There's nothing more expensive than a free animal. I spent $4k on emergency surgery for my free pound dog right before last Christmas. And was lucky we could afford it.

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Diamond ring doesn't purr though.

1 month ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 2

Theyre also not as fluffy and soft, quite the opposite

Again, I have 3 cats. I am not team Diamond Ring

1 month ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 1

I have lots of cats. It costs me about $50 per month to support three cats.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Until they get sick. Then it's instantly more expensive than a reasonable ring. My cat got a urinary issue that was life-threatening and it cost me $4k to have him treated. And I was lucky I had the money or he would have been dead. I think I can buy a decent ring for $4k...

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have two cats. One costs me almost nothing. The other one is old with various ailments and... let's say she's lucky I have a good salary and no kids.

My wedding ring has significance to me. Akin to wearing the emblem for something you believe in. Does it need to be precious metals or gems? No. It's value should be inherent to the owner.

Does that mean I NEED it? Suppose not. But it doesn't seem an unreasonable thing to want.

1 month ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 2

Wife and I have been married for 20 years. Our rings are in a box somewhere and have been for like, 18 of those years, so no, probably not.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No, not even for marriage. 15 years, no ring, not even a second thought. Do it (or don't) because you want to, not because society 'expects'.

1 month ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Historically, precious metals and stones retained their value pretty well and jewelry could be sold at any time in any country without much of a loss. It allowed wives to escape abusive husbands, widows to settle their late husband's debts, and war refugees to establish a new life in another place. And it served as a security that a young man wouldn't skip town to escape a looming shotgun marriage. But none of this applies anymore in this day and age.

1 month ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Actually, that's the reason pimps dress so flamboyantly. If they get arrested, any money they're carrying on them can be confiscated by the police, but they get to keep their jewelry, which they can then pawn for quick cash.

I agree only with the second part. This is my opinion: a slave's single duty is to rebel and execute their masters. If they are not rebeling that means they are either happy with their station or that the propaganda from above tastes finer than freedom. I believe the latter is why we are doomed to fail.

Plot twist, the marriage is term limited to the life of the cat...barring accidents they'll probably both be back on the market by 2040

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

You're giving the cat 14 years? Many marriages make it just over that duration: White (22 yrs), Asian (17 yrs), Black & Hispanic (both 15 yrs), Other (13 yrs). Just over that duration for educated (17, 18, 19; bachelors, masters, some college) (the uneducated == longer duration). Marriages that end in divorce happen more quickly. 2% make it to Diamond.

That's as may be, but everything about the scene suggests very strongly that it is indeed a marriage proposal with him presenting her a kitten.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The marriage proposal is real, the part where he couldn't afford a ring is completely made up. This happened in 2016, the couple went to adopt a kitten and the guy proposed. There was a ring, though, the article I found even has a picture (you can't see the ring but it's what he's putting on her finger).

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In Europe engagement rings are much less common and usually of a sensible size (and cost). This whole diamond madness is something we simply don't understand. There's so much variation you can achieve already much more economically with gold (and white gold, rose gold, platinum, palladium, etc.).

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

American here. I got my wife an opal instead. They’re prettier anyway

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You get get rings with huge stones, even white shiny ones, but not from debeers or any of those big stores. I'm getting a custom designed platinum band with a 8mm stone for less than $2000.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Diamonds are garbage. Diamond rings are scams. Worthless pieces of rock no more rare than sand.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

If I ever did it again, I'd want to do a band set with our birthstones.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Memes like this are straight-up social media manipulation designed to start a big argument and waste your energy hating on a big cartel that everyone already hates.

In the meantime, ICE is murdering citizens and legal residents.

This picture isn't from a marriage proposal at all, so I will post an earlier example of it.

It's possible to be aware of and care about more than one thing.

1 month ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Yup, I have plenty of hate to spread around.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sure, but in this case, you were manipulated by someone wanting to enlarge you and engage you. Instead, it's just a cute picture of a girl delighted by the kitten. Her husband just gave her.

1 month ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

The good news is y'all don't have to do what is traditional or what the stores tell you to do. My husband and I got our wedding rings at the local flea market. A year or two later, when I could afford it, I got him a gold band. I never had an engagement ring. I got myself a plain silver band (actually multiple ones because I lose crap). Talk to your partner and decide your priorities

1 month ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I bought 5 cheep rings on Amazon so I never have to worry about losing the ring. I spent the money I saved on the ring on a nice watch that I know I will have the rest of my life.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's smart!

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My plan, if I ever wind up getting married, is to go out and learn how to melt/cast/set my own ring from silver (not a fan of gold). That way I could say that it truly is a unique ring, with no other like it existing in the world.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That is a fantastic idea. That would be an awesome ring. (One ring to rule them all!)

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My old boss/friend and his wife got stone rings. Not gemstone. Just stone. They probably paid a couple hundred for the craftsmanship. Don't remember the stone

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There are so many gorgeous minerals and stones. I have some rings with amazing jasper or turquoise

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The original image had nothing to do with the proposal so, maybe just consider the fact that you were manipulated.

1 month ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 4

They're way cheaper now that China has gone in big with production. It's for the cutting edge of integrated circuits, the destruction of the cartel monopoly and a 90% reduction in wholesale pricing is just a side benefit.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I recently got married. Both our rings together cost about 2000€. Not cheap, but you can go cheaper, if you want to. She has a couple of small diamonds. Each one was about 50-60€. Again, not cheap. But considering there is this "3 months worth of pay"-baseline floating around, i feel i got Off easy

1 month ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Moissanite...wayyy cheaper and nobody except a jeweler can tell the difference. Diamonds are stupid.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We got titanium ones some 25 years ago. They were 100€ for a pair. Best is, the rings look exactly the same as they were new. In manual labor, golden or platinum, even steel rings dissent date well in daily use

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We got tantalum rings. They are darker than titanium and rank slightly above it in mohs hardness scale as well. Your rings would be slightly less expensive than our rings today, but we liked that dark color

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yea that is nice. Does it polish in use? Mine does. My wifes doesn't. (Manual laboring effects I guess...)

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Too early to tell. It probably will a bit

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Everything about the wedding industry is a scam. I've worked triple digit wedding receptions. I've seen the master sheet invoices. And we were a cheap option. Best weddings were gay weddings. They cut out the unwanted guests and were just happy to be here. One time they made a speech specifically to applaud the staff. Like aw so sweet but we're getting paid to do this you guys! Still so sweet. And tons better than say the time we had to cut off the father of the bride who had paid for everything

1 month ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Why not tree fiddy? Amount of weddings. One ever Saturday in season for 8 years. Plus Friday/Saturdays sometimes. Winter weddings (the best I've got a favorite story there). But seriously, 350 is how much I would spend. Not counting marriage license, that's a good catering order for a small group of people, wedding gift is byob. Let's do like ribs and shit. If the wife wants to wear white, the wine and BBQ stains will serve as a badge of honor as to how fierce she was at the table

People somehow think that flawed natural stones are more valuable than lab grown flawless stones and they all shine the same anyway.

1 month ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

We got lab diamond. Cant think of any reason why they are not superior. Cheaper, identical on a molecular level, flawless, and ETHICAL. No one's child had to die in a hole underground for this.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They don't shine, they reflect light:)

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sometimes the flaws are what makes them cool when we're speaking of gem or mineral specimens. But the jewelry industry is full exploitative labor and artificial scarcity.

1 month ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Some people prefer smaller natural boobs to bigger fake ones.

Some people thought that Cindy Crawford's mole was a defect, or that Jennifer Grey's pre-surgery nose needed to be changed - but it's what made them distinctive.

Some people think that original masterwork oil paintings with small cracks and signs of age are more valuable than identical looking modern copies that are flawless.

The relative rarity of an object sometimes makes it valuable. Mined diamonds are not rare.

1 month ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It's honestly kind of hilarious how *the opposite of rare* diamond is.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sure but no one is going to inspect the jewelry you are wearing under a microscope. You might just as well wear glass. It's there to look pretty. The other thing is the bragging rights that you could spend tens or hundreds of thousands on something that just looks pretty. Just as with watches. A good watch that tells time is dirt cheap. Even good mechanical watches are inexpensive. The rest is just bragging rights! In my oppinion, stupid.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I recently tried to sell a 1.25k natural diamond and three different jewelry stores said they would give me the price of the gold in the band but the diamond was worthless. If you are buying it because you like the look of a diamond, buy lab grown.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, it's a scam. Especially the small ones are pretta much worthless.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Exactly. And even among natural stones, disregarding all the other stuff tied to them and looking at them from purely an aesthetic point of view, diamonds are fucking *boring*. So many more interesting stones out there.

1 month ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

People like them for wedding rings because they can match it with any color outfit. So I understand why someone would get one, but get a lab grown for the wedding ring and spend your money on a Sapphire or emerald for another ring.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nearly every western wedding “outfit” is “white dress and whatever the groom is doing”

Unless you mean post wedding stuff. In which case, it’s a little polished rock on one of your fingers, it can “clash” with your outfit; unless your outfit matters more than your wedding ring, then just don’t wear it for said event?

That's why you don't get embalmed and go with an eco-friendly cardboard box coffin.
Drops the costs from tends of thousands to a couple of hundred.
They will really push to upsell you, but you don't need any of that stuff. Go cheap on the funeral and spend for the wake, as it's the last party for your life, it's what really matters. Because that's what people are going to remember.

I told my mother I wanted my body donated to “the body farm” where your body is left in specific conditions outdoors to decay for forensics studying;
1 so I could possibly help find bodies / solve murders
2 so my body could naturally return to the earth (at least some)
She looked at me like I just cut open her stomach and was pissing into it
She couldn’t handle the idea of someone “leaving their body to rot” I can’t understand the idea of trying to preserve your dead body for eternity w/toxins

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah, though body donation has very few guidelines and regulations around it.
A large majority of bodies that get donated to science. People think will end up helping research or to train doctors. The majority of them end up in weapons testing programs. Because they need to know what the weapon will do to a real human body. So naturally they go through a lot of bodies quickly. Which isn't what most people are expecting when they sign up for it.

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Ye, this is why I would want to find a way for it to be sent specifically to the body farm. If it isn’t possible my first pick would be to leave me out back for nature to reclaim. If that isn’t possible then put me in biodegradable cardboard and drop me in a simple hole somewhere that isn’t a cemetery. Somewhere where I won’t be surrounded by preservative filled pressure boxes, and I can better return to the energy cycle of our planet. I don’t want anything detrimental to anything put in me.
